Oh, that reminds me, Uematsu also said the beginning of OWA was basically taken from Jimi Hendrix' Purple Haze. :awesomonster:

i thought that was with the AC version...

still as Shademp says there are like a ton of references and inspirations for OWA so i was gonna miss a few lol.

good looking out both of you and thank you!

Edit: You guys think that's worth re-editing the title card over? I want these videos to be pretty close to perfect

Speaking of Uematsu's inspirations...

Anxious Heart quite obviously borrows the chord progression from Kraftwerk's Spacelab.

Not FFVII-related, but Sacred Ground, Esto Gaza is quite obviously inspired by Erik Satie, namely the Gymnopédies.

There's also the original version of the Dollet Invasion theme from FFVIII that got replaced because it sounded reminiscent of Hans Zimmer's theme from The Rock.

Wow. Yeah, that's like... wow. That's not even an homage, he straight ripped that from the song it seems.

Oooh, brilliant observation. I never made that connection before! When I get around to FF9, I'll be sure to include that! Good looking out!

That is the theme I referenced in here which played during the FF8 Demo. It was replaced with this.

o__O

At first I was skeptical but as the melody went on...... If Nobuo Uematsu wasn't ripping off that song then we can say that this is one hell of a coincidence.

It's like it's not even just the same structure, the same chord progression, no. The beginning part there is the exact same melody with the exact same timing and tempo.

Double and necro posting bans are two of the strangest rules that are just accepted across the forum world that have never made sense. One of my favorite things about TLS rules is that it's the much more reasonable "if you have something substantive to had, do whatever."

I think those rules - as well as a thing where sometimes topic have a maximum amount of posts before they're closed and the thread re-created - stem from a technical reason. Okay, double posts can just be annoying, but whatever. But in other cases, like reviving an old thread, could cause fragmentation in the database - it's like newer posts are hot in memory, old ones are written to disk, and getting the old ones has a performance impact.

But that's years and years ago, nowadays databases aren't bothered with fragmentation anymore and hardware is faster than projectile vomit after bad fish.

To be honest, I wouldn't really name any song as inspired by something else unless stated so by Uematsu himself. Often these similarities can just be coincidental.

Fair enough. :monster:

Besides, Uematsu tends to lean more towards the classical end of the spectrum. Still, the similarity is noteworthy.

I can give you Glassworks <=> Freya's Theme, but Anxious Heart has a pretty clear calque from Spacelab, it's not really arguable. Esto Gaza as well, but that's just inspiration and not a clear lift from the source

Well in fairness to Tetsujin's point anybody who listens to anything is going to inadvertently re-use something that's been done before. Now, I agree if Uematsu wasn't referencing Space Lab it was the mother of all coincidences, but since this is going to (eventually) go on the front page, it wouldn't be cool to state as fact something which could just be a musical coincidence.

If you look hard enough you can find similarities between pretty much any classical piece and any modern piece which may or may not have been intended. For more on that juxtaposition:

Anxious Heart is beyond coincidence though... the rest you can attribute it to coincidence. Just not that one, way too obvious.

Speaking of coincidences, if you pay attention to the bassline to this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YaUzYISKKAI at 0:43 and on, you should recognize it as the classic FF battle theme bassline. This I would call it a pure coincidence, it's not a very complex bassline and I have my doubts if Uematsu listened to The Wipers. I have zero doubts he listened to Kraftwerk, though.

Okay guys, here's Part 4. I'm kind of self-conscious about this one because it feels less complete, but then again I did just talk about like 6 tracks from each. Also this project has made me fully aware that I am no sound producer so I think for the next OST review I might want to hire some help for the audio engineering aspect of it. And if somebody else can tackles the video we could be the Three Amiibos. (lame pun is lame)

Anyways, hope you all like it still!

And only just now I rememembered I failed to mention the bonus DLC soundtrack that Shademp mentioned... grrr. Well if I ever do an in-depth look at that particular game I'll include it.

Great as all the others have been. If you wanted to list ALL of the updated renditions in AC, Great Northern Cave plays during Kadaj and Rufus' conversation on the building.

One correction, which I'm almost loathe to make as everything else you said about it is spot on. But that particular version of the FF7 Main Theme actually plays during the scene from Case of Denzel. Where Denzel finds Cloud's phone, calls Tifa, passes out and is found by Cloud.
During Cloud and Marlene's conversation, a simple piano rendition plays.

I LOVE Beyond the Wasteland, and my favorite part is the sound of the violin bows hitting the strings right before the action bit kicks in.

I feel pretty stupid for not ever realized Violator is Shinra Corporation. For some reason I always just assumed it was referencing Fighting and didn't think more on it, nice call.

It's amazing how similar some Dirge and XIII tracks are. You could drop most of them in the other soundtrack without noticing. Fight with Shelke always stuck out to me as sounding very XIII.

Good analysis of Dirge too (though you missed my personal favorite, Silent Edge. But that's mainly for how atmospheric it is, I don't think it calls back to any other tracks), I never paid too much attention to Calm Before the Storm before.

The two Gackt tracks I think are the only time Square has stuck otherwise unrelated pop/rock songs into a game and actually have it mesh with the game. And I like both of them as well. Longing often gets overlooked.

ForceStealer:

First off, good call on that correction and I will have to update that.

Second:

YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW!!!!

I totally had "Silent Edge" lined up for the playlist. It's my favorite track too. The only reason I cut it out was because I couldn't think of anything significant to say about it apart from "this is a super cool ambient piece."

One correction: Summoned Beast Battle (official English track title is A Contest of Aeons) was composed by Junya Nakano

Ah, Longing and Redemption...those songs got me into Gackt. :awesomonster:

I wouldn't say unrelated...I mean, he did record them specifically for the game.

My silly OST has an error then. Good looking out. That's another error to fix! I'm gonna go on to part 5 first then go back and fix the errors all at once, for my sanity's sake. That gives people more time to notice any other bugs.

Sorry for being that guy again...:wacky:
But regarding the sound quality of the BC OST, they rearranged the tracks specifically for that. The music in the actual game is not as good: https://youtu.be/9fYtNUC6Aek?t=3m2s

Also, around 6:08: its, not it's

Also a nitpick: I probably would've used the official English track names from iTunes (e.g.: "Living Legacy" instead of "Fulfilled Desire")

I like the observation on Aerith's theme with the guitar representing Zack...I hadn't even thought of that.

Hmm...so you too think CC's OWA sounds a bit like Elfman, eh?

I also like the observation of guitar standing for Zack's everyman-hero quality.

Wandering on a Sunny Afternoon is a great track. Feels exactly like it's supposed to.

Fully agreed on The Price of Freedom, it never fails to give me a goosebumps. What a sad, but wonderful song. An example of why I still very much appreciate Ishimoto's work even while acknowledging peoples criticism that he's too rock-heavy.

Clandestine Dark Suits is a solid Turks cover, but I wish it used the snaps in some way.

Mako-Controlling Organization - You're definitely right about the ways it does things the MIDI song couldn't manage. But, as I've encountered with other reorchestrations, the drums frequently lack the oomph that the MIDI had.

Great observations about the Anxious Heart cover. A lot of people recoiled from the drum beat, I like your explanation of their inclusion.

I like The World's Enemy. Not better than the other one, but I think the chaotic, disorganized version fits better with the Sephiroth at this time period. He's not a detached, calculating figure with aspirations of godhood in Nibelheim. He has snapped and the song reflects it.

100% on Fulfilled Desire. One of the best tracks in all of the compilation, even including FF7. The fade from the slide guitar to violins at the end is fantastic. And the full orchestration of Fighting is still the best version of the track to date.

Tetsujin: Being "that guy" helps me make sure these things are as good as possible. That's why these are just the "beta". I'm gonna back now and tighten up the errors in the other parts and make it be all really good and junk.

Thank you both for your kind words about the subject. Yeah the reason it took so long was because I had to really listen and review the CC soundtrack since I wasn't that familiar with it.

And yes, sorry Force, but while I understand it artistically I didn't care for The World's Enemy. Yes, Tets, it's like Danny Elfman to my ear. It's all bouncy and stuff, which is probably the most concise and least elegant way to explain what danny elfman sounds like.

Except perhaps this

Edit: Another question. What are you all thinking of the opening gags in each part? If they're good I'l continue them in the next review I do, but if they're poor or distracting...

Uploading the last two parts to youtube now with the corrections in tow. At long last, this behemoth project is over. Will include those links here and in the first post when it's all said and done with.
