I don't use IRC at all (still didn't bother to learn how) and rarely get on Skype, so I have nothing to add but "good luck," "it sounds like IRC sucks anyway," and "Fangu makes points that make me nod my head, but I think Yop and Splint are right that Skype has more appeal to most people because of shiny."
There really isn't anything to learn about how to use IRC unless you're an op or want to register your screen name, and even then most commands are pretty simple. It's pretty intuitive.
Well, if you want the chat window to highlight on new messages and stuff like that you should, though there's also a web-based chat client (the link is next to "user cp" in the forum navbar). But the stuff is pretty intuitive and there's a guide for it on the forum.
The thing is though, who wants to wait? I've left the IRC open on my browser for hours before with no response. Either that or I'll day, "Hi," then two hours later one of the users logged in will respond, "Hey, what's up?" But by then I'm no longer paying attention, until I notice a half hour or hour later and say, "Not much, you?" and so on and so on. If I want to chat with someone like that I'll leave them a note in their user comments.
I'm actually with Tenny on that. Like I said before I've always preferreed using IRC but it's incredibly disheartening also waiting for a reply when there's only like 1-2 people on especially when I've logged in for around and hour or two and gone Heeeeyyy and no one answers. But I think the more people use the chat, the more people will be on it too I guess..speaking of, logging in now.
I find that if I poke my head into the chat and there's not really anyone around (some people stay logged into it all day but aren't really there, etc) or anyone talking when I pop in, I just leave and come back a bit later. There's been some interesting talk in there, but I guess I just haven't felt the need to go there?
I will say that I found my previous experiences in the chat...enlightening. I suppose that's what the major impetus for any regular posting on my part is/was.
I will be appearing in both Skype and IRC. Because of the functionalities that Skype has that IRC does not (able to send documents, privacy, it is able to make a sound when a message is received, harder to impersonate someone, etc.) I do prefer Skype over IRC. That said, the opportunity to meet new folks on the IRC is something I'm excited about so I will pop into IRC from time to time.
Mibbit is a great web based IRC client if you don't want to install something.
I really like IRC, even though I'm often out to sea and can't use my personal computer to hop on. For it to revive it'll take a community spearhead effort to to so to make it attractive to everyone, it'll take more than 'yeah great idea guys!!!!'. Communication is a socially inspired thing, if no one is spurred on to it, then nothing will happen with it.

This goes in your address bar. If you can't find your address bar, good luck with life in general.
STEP 2
You can put your nick right in here, but to open the app in a new tab, click on 'here' (not this here, and not the one in that image, but the one that follows after completing step 1 - if you managed)
STEP 3
Now think of something DIFFERENT than BananaKing. If you really have no imagination, you can always use PineappleKing or whatevs. Typically, this nick should resemble the one you have on the forum, but since the two are not connected in any way technically, it's all up to you. LEAVE THE PASSWORD FIELD BLANK. I REPEAT. LEAVE IT BLANK. This goes for EVERYONE.
If you already registered and know the command for identifying, leave the password field blank and identify when you are in. iPocalypse's identifying commands are a bit irregular from other servers, and so the built in command in the app don't match the server, and therefore will not work until someone on the app team fixes it.
FAQ
Q: Does this mean anyone can enter on my nick????!!!
A: No. Or, it means they can enter with your nick just as if they were using a regular client (like mIRC), but the server will ask for a password, then change their nick if they fail to register. Just as with mIRC. The app is just another way to enter #tls, but the rules are the same.
When you have successfully managed to type out 4-12 letters (preferably something a bit more original than 'Dave' or 'Legolas' - I won't trouble you with the explanation for that, just do as I say) click 'Start'.
HURRAH!
This is all you need to do, really. WELCOME TO #tls! Now was that hard? Not verily.
Now, there's this thing about having the notification bar on your computer blink when there's new messages in the channel. Sadly this isn't working for me at the moment - but that could be Adblock or something.
So, should you want to explore this: Click on the toolbar thingy as shown in the picture above.
Congratulations! You are now in Settings. Look for this:
Click it and see if you can make something out of it.
Yeah, people confused that saying with 'Black as the Ace of Spades' - which besides being racist is probably the stupidest thing ever. I mean not to go off at a tangent (but I am anyway) who was it who started saying people we're black and white? Were they colourblind? Nobody is actually black, and not even Albinos are white. It just fucking annoys me.
Like the bald eagle - its not fucking bald - a Vulture should be called a bald eagle. /rant
The ironic part is that "bald" used not to mean "without hair". It used to mean "white patch" especially on the head of an animal. So in the 1680, when the bald eagle was named, it was a very appropriate name.

Agg so I've been directing my anger at the wrong person! Sounds like 'bald' was coined in reference to head hairlessness* as some sort of euphemism, and now look where we are
*I'm going to use this phase as often as possible now.
What I didn't say earlier is that when the Skype group thingy happened (for the IX community playthrough), a lot of the casual conversation that used to take place in #tls was moved to that other chat instead.
I can stay in both #tls and the Skype chat - but what happens is that if there's occasional jabber in the Skype chat, I'll end up typing in there instead.
I really want #tls back up on its feet. This is why I've chosen to stay out of the Skype chat. If you want to talk to Fangu, you're gonna have to go to #tls

It's just a universally understood/accepted euphemism of language (a common thing that language does, it often approximates instead of insisting on literal meaning); I'm pretty sure nobody actually thinks dark skinned people are literally black and vice versa!
Okay so

I'm cool with Skype, but I agree with this sentiment as well, #tls is where I'm going to stay, because I want it to get on its feet as well. Not enough people might care to actually result in this, but hell, I want to try.
