I love zombie games, but I am beyond tired of this shit. I don't just wanna bulldoze through zombie hordes like Rambo. It's fucking boring. I like zombies because it's supposed to be, uh, horror. You know, scary because their supposed to be super hard to kill and most normal people wouldn't be able to toss throwing stars or whatever the hell to defend themselves.

I like games like Left 4 Dead and all, it's fun, but goddamn I miss feeling genuine suspense and fear rather than just repeatedly bashing skulls in.

It probably won't be a bad game but eeeh, just not what I'm looking for.

ME AND JOE JUST SAID THIS.

THIS IS THE END OF THE FUCKING WORLD, THE DEMISE OF MODERN SOCIETY AND CIVILITY. WHY DOESN'T ANYONE TREAT THIS SUBJECT MATTER WITH SERIOUSNESS IN GAMES.

Also, about the nailbait, wtf with the physics, how does the bat make the tank explode? was it leaking gas and the nails produced a spark? Then she picks the fucking bat up and uses it like it was undamaged.

I really want a zombie game that isn't a ridiculous power fantasy.

Honestly, I just miss RE2. If you didn't do something within the first two seconds of the game starting, you were fucking dead. It was by far the greatest zombie game I've played, although I've heard good things about RE4.

And, since I've been reading The Walking Dead for the last week, I think the story would make for a nice template for a game. Combine that with a structure similar to Heavy Rain/Fahrenheit where the story changes based on your actions and it would be awesome.

You'll probly get that then since Telltale (the guys doing the new sam and max games, back to the future, etc.) is doing a Walking Dead game with a focus on story and characters.

and about the video.. yes.. thats just what we need in this game, a rage mode. And did anyone else find it odd how there was sand/dirt constantly blowing by? it isnt the fucking desert.

I really doubt telltale games skill to make a TWD game. But eh, Kirkman trusts them. I will wait and see.

Yeah, but they they've shown they're good at treating properties with respect and do their best to be as faithful as they can, so we'll see

I saw the gameplay trailer again and this time I took note of the weapon names:

powerless knife
explosive homemade knife of concussion
shock machete of padding

...just

what

Joystiq got a chance to check out the game, and give some early impressions.

If you ain't plannin' on dying together, you'd best get learnin' to fight together. We got our first bite of Dead Island's co-op at E3, which adds a lot more dimension to the overall game than the single-player experience we had before.

Getting the zombified elephant out of the room first, though, publisher Deep Silver says the game's animations and combat feel aren't yet finalized yet. A good thing, since many of the melee weapons still aren't satisfying. For a game that has three of its four core characters focused on beating the infected stuffing out of the undead, the melee looks like chaotic slashing and feels incongruent with the effort put into the rest of the game.

That's not to say all the melee weapons feel awkward, which makes the whole situation even more bizarre to explain. The baseball bats actually seem to have a heft to them, so when you're attacking a zombie there's a reaction. You'd expect the same kind of look from a heavy metal rod, but it just doesn't seem to jive. Whether it's the animations, zombie reactions or something I'm just not pinpointing, the melee combat still needs work. I didn't have an opportunity to try out a gun, but Dead Island if very focused on melee combat being core to the overall experience.

As for the co-op of Dead Island, now that's something worth possibly getting stuck on an island of the undead for.

Dead Island (E3 2011)

Dead Island's co-op is designed to work peer-to-peer, a disconnection will just boot you back to your own world solo. Friends can jump into their buddy's vacation nightmare as one of four characters. Multiple players can be the same character, so it's possible to have a team of four "tanks "or four "rogues," but that's not recommended.

The characters can be broken down into some basic class types. Logan is the "jack of all trades" and can support the team with stat boosting shouts. Xian Mei is the rogue, specializing in pointy weapons and can even gain a backstab ability later on. Sam B. is the tank and is designed to collect undead aggro. Finally, Purna is the "mage" or "hunter," the only character proficient in guns, who is supposed to stand back and pew-pew from afar.

I played as Sam B. during my preview. However, without messing around with the class tree or having any real knowledge that I was supposed to play the "tank" role, the whole experience felt more like Left 4 Dead. Our job was to leave the Church safehouse and put up some posters, but I was just a tag-a-long on the quest. In the end I think I completed the quest, but without actually interacting with the other three players verbally, I just followed the one person who grabbed the quest and pushed foward by punching, stabbing and beating any zombies that crossed our path.

It's pretty easy to tell that Dead Island will have less of that Left 4 Dead arcade experience and feel more like a Borderlands style RPG once you're playing with real friends, coordinating skill trees and actually having a care for the other members of the party.

Not that you actually have to play with friends when you inhabit their Dead Island world. Four players can play "together," but still wander off and do their own thing. A quest tracker allows you to see what everyone else is up to and coordinate if you desire.

The game will also have collectibles like Crackdown's orbs or Assassin's Creeds feathers. However, there won't be an easy map function to track these and each player's collectibles live separately in their world. Meaning, if your buddy grabs a collectible, they will have to tell you where it is so you can also get it.

The co-op experience will also be online only. No split-screen couch co-op. There will also be no bots available to control the other characters. If you're playing alone, you are dying alone.

Despite the kinks that still have to get worked out of the melee combat, if you're looking for a co-op RPG experience with friends, Dead Island is shaping up to deliver a solid drop-in/drop-out experience.

Not surprised on the report of the melee fighting since it looked awkward as hell.

I just heard that they're releasing the real version Friday. I'm surprised there isn't more press about it, I've only heard about it because of my friends being so frustrated with the game. I'm still curious how it'll turn out, however. Anyone know of any actual impressions from the real build of the game?

Well I've been playing it and haven't run into alot of the problems most people have been getting, but the game seems pretty fun. You can turn off those annoying ass health bars, dmg, lvl indicators the zombies have for a more "realistic" experience.
I've heard people say its similar to fallout (I havent played it, so i dunno), but you can run around the island wherever you want, and do missions at your leisure. The game saves basically whenever you do anything but if you wuit and go back in, you'll start at your home base so you keep your lvl and weapons, etc. but go back to your hub.
The world's not as interactive as i would like tho. Basically if it isnt a car, a weapon, food item, or occasional crate you can pick up, you cant move anything in the environment. kick a chair? nothing happens. I'm also finding myself relying on a few choice weapons and just upgrading/repairing them instead of using new stuff I find in the wild.
The characters arnt that memorable, pretty bland. But the voice acting's decent (especially the trading guy at the lighthouse, I could listen to him all day)

It's fun tho. I'd only recommend it if you enjoy beating the hell out of zombies, which IS fun. break their arms, they cant use them anymore and try to bite you. I'm still under lvl 10 but it seems like if you break/cut off their leg, they die.

The accent on some people is a bit too crikey dingo fair dinkum kookaburra wombat for me. I don't even think Steve Irwin spoke like that 100% of the time.

I don't get it with the glitches. Is this supposed to be a fully released game, or is it still beta? =p. *is not with it*

They uploaded the dev build to the steam servers by accident, and they're still trying to patch it so it's the final version.

The dev builds got stuff for all 3 consoles (as is my understanding), and its conflicting with each other and causing random glitches. Some people have no problems, for other it's unplayable.

LOL I MAD 2

I also got stuck in this part for a good 5 minutes or so until I saw some translucent boxes in the garage area. Apparently you're supposed to place the juice boxes in a corner of the garage. I'm far past this part, now in act 2 chapter 5 or 6 at the moment, so can't get you a screenie. :(

Ugh.. yeah, I saw that after raging for a bit lol Apparently my waypoint told me to take it to him, and there was nothing around where i was supposed to put them :/

I really loved the hotel :D
