Oh, wow, time caught up! I had been thinking about this around the start of the month and the next thing I know it's 3 weeks later. Thanks for mentioning this! Gotta get around to seeing them soon.
Pretty convenient that Crunchyroll has a trial period of Premium Membership for 2 weeks - granted there's no catch, it seems a good route to go down. Regardless, I'll probably wait till the 27th anyway - it gives me something to look forward to before I start work again (which are Saturdays)
Have any of you watched up to episode 8? I watched all of them so far yesterday. I was kind of lost. The whole time I was assuming it followed the events leading up to season 2, or an alternate timeline. What happened to the season 2 kids?
Yeah nothing is explained yet but I have heard people talk about it being an alternative timeline. I even heard a theory that it wasn't Ken, it was his brother Sam. But there's no proof of anything that is happening, and I'm not sure how much I buy the alternate talk.
The heartache I felt at Joe and Mimi's storylines really hit me, especially Joe's. I completely felt the fine line between wanting to work hard and succeed at life, but knowing deep down the pain at having to turn your back on your friends and your time together - which is something precious that can never be replicated. Both are equally important to enable a balance in life and Joe's pain struck deep.
So to see the two attain their Ultimate evolutions in this way was awesome.
There are some criticisms that are justly labelled at this second movie though. The fanservice at the bath-house was rather gratuitous (though at least it was gender balanced, rather than it being one sided as usual). And the animation during the battle really slipped.
I don't agree with some comments about the story being painfully slow however. This is first and foremost a character driven narrative, and the sprinkles of story we get in the background are extremely interesting.
There are a lot of mysteries, but we still have 4 other films to go through it all.
I think it's safe to say that reality has been warped somehow. The group know of the 02 kids (who we witnessed were defeated at the hands of Alphamon) but there just don't seem to be any close ties to them, and both TK and Kari's digivices are their original 01 forms. And there are some serious Tamer-esque vibes, as the Government lady has some kind of connection to events, with Meicoomon's feral rage at eradicating the virus. I think she might be a Government altered, or even made, Digimon.
Can't wait for the third movie, and though I was annoyed at first that it is in 6 months time, I don't mind if it means they can be consistent with the animation - especially in battles which we have been light on so far.
Definitely a massive improvement over the previous installment, however, there is still a heck of a lot of pacing issues which need sorting out. It's weird how they just can't seem to get this right. There is just an ungodly amount of talking in 'stages', with 'we'll talk more on this later' continuously overused and abused. And though the final battle was exciting, the episodes in-between would have benefited from a small fight to break up the large portions of dialogue.
Having said that, like I said, a massive improvement. Though a lot of the dialogue sections could have been condensed (and actually be more constructive) the emotional thread running throughout the episodes was perfect. Anything with TK and Patamon chokes me up, and I wasn't disappointed.
The writers REALLY don't know what to do with Mei. She feels completely out of place. This was always going to be inevitable because of the huge history we have with an established cast, but the writers should be doing more with her. All we've had is her crying and moping ... and not much else. She hasn't actually contributed anything. At all. You could cut her out of the story and nothing will have changed.
Granted, this could all change in the back half of Tri, but we're 3 episodes / movies down now ... there are bigger questions and developments which need a focus.
Really annoyed at some things, like the Government's involvement and how the group aren't questioning it more. And don't even get me started on the 02 kids. Oh, a quick word from her that they are looking out for them, and that's it? Everything to do with the 02 connection feels lazy at this point - a massive elephant in the room that they barely want to address. Yes, we'll get something now that Fake-Ken is revealed, but again, 3 episodes in guys, this is really sloppy.
A single Digimon God? Where did that come from?
I'm not holding my breath about the reboot sticking. They won't wipe that history away. I fully expect this to be fixed before long.
Overall, this episode balances out a lot of the problems with the second episode. But when you factor in the long wait we have for the next installment (and that it will be 2018 before this concludes) Tri really is an 'ok' enjoyment ... but not much more than that. The emotion is great, but the story needs some serious work.
I have problems with Mei, a lot, but that's largely because when I think about how much face time she consumes for Digimon Tri when we've got eight main characters and four missing ones, a part of me dies. I'm pretty sure that Mei has more characterization and screentime than Jyou which kind of infuriates me, especially since it looks like besides Tai and Matt, characters will have their plot issues arise and resolve in their respective movie, but Mei will continue to have a spotlight shone on her.
Just not my thing. I mean, I get it, lots of times it's easier for a story in a sequel or a movie to introduce a character to have the plot revolve around, but if not done right, it's just obnoxious. Tenchi in Tokyo comes in mind.
I really liked this movie around, and not just because it has my favorite character. I think it's picking up where it wants to be in the plot.
But man, is this show is pretty cheap. They only produce eight episodes a year and a lot of it looks pretty lazy. I mean, there's one thing where a directoral choice to have a lot of moments of contemplation, but all these still frames have me rolling my eyes. Toei makes these weird ass choices. It's not like they are not making money or they are running out of time. C'mon guys.

I laughed for like, thirty minutes on how ridiculous their reaction was. They see a fake Ken running around and panic and can't find them, then all of a sudden one person is like "oh, they're pref okay guys : )" and everyone is fine with that?
How do they even miss this? Yolei and Cody live in the same apartment building as TK. They should be going to the same school (Yolei is even seen in the same school uniform at the end of the last Adventure movie). How is do you even forget that Davis isn't around, he's like... the loudest character in the series?
And when the world reboots, they didn't bother contacting them? But went out their way to contact Meiko? How about the people that helped them save the world? What about the rest of the chosen children around the world? Is it just a "sucks to be them" moment? I'm not even a huge 02 fan, and this is just embarrassing.
Lots of the Digimon worlds goes with the one digimon god thing now. It doesn't necessarily go along with Adventure's style but it's not unheard of. There are super god like digimon, and in many cases their gods aren't digimon at all, just like super computers.
There was clearly something more going on in the mythology, because we don't know what was possessing Kari (although her movie might address it finally), and Gennai and others were working on saving the world. It just didn't indicate there was a god.
Anyway if we're talking about Digimon mythology, I'm about to reveal just the lengths my sadness has gone. The other Digimon Alphamon was fighting is Jessmon
who is the digivolution of Hakmon, the digimon you saw creepin and wearing a red cape.
This is important because last I remember, Jessmon and Alphamon are members of the royal nights, which are a big deal in the digimon franchise and fandom. They're the sacred group that's meant to protect the Digital World, although in nearly every appearance, it usually means shits about to blow up because they are out to destroy whatever is messing with the digital world, usually the human world.
But both Omnimon and Imperialdramon are Royal Knights as well, so this might be the founding of the group.
Also it's nice to be in the digital world again. I always that it was more interesting.
