Do you find FF guys good-looking? Why (not)?

Torrie

astray ay-ay-ay
The Remake offered us a bunch of presumably good-looking men in HD. Even months after the release, they still keep artists occupied and fangirls drooling, Cloud, Zack, Reno, Tseng probably being among the most popular eye-candies recently. Basically, each FF game has a few characters who were designed to be adored for their appearance, so this thread says "FF guys", not "FF7R guys" exclusively.

So let's discuss the following.

What makes FF boys visually attractive to thousands of players?
Do you find FF boys handsome or do you tend to think they look unrealistic and way too feminine so you feel like punching them in the face?
If you do find them handsome, does it make you feel bad about your own appearance (e.g. ugly, unfit, unworthy, etc.)?
Do you enjoy playing a character who has muscles of steel but a baby face? (A dig at Cloud or Vaan, for instance.)
Are you attracted to any of the characters in particular (aesthetically, platonically, romantically, or sexually, if that's not too personal to share), and why?

Boys, girls, non-binary folks, I want to know your thoughts.

On the whole I find them too girly for my tastes.
Tseng in particular was a disaster in the Remake. He should have been older, less pretty, and more masculine.
Reno looks a bit skankier in the Remake than he did in ACC so that's a plus, and Rude looks really good, if a little too white-washed.
Rufus is perfect.
Biggs is far and away the best looking guy in the Remake, though.
I wouldn't say I am attracted to any of them. I like writing about their characters.

One of the things I LOVE about Ghost of Tsushima is that none of the characters are eye-candy. They look like real human beings and are lovable because of that.

How about unrealistic, way too feminine, but incredibly beautiful? No, I don't feel like punching them in the face haha. That's for the 7R boys. For most of the others, I guess they're on the pretty side, but I wouldn't really consider them way too feminine.

I'm curious about what makes them seemingly attractive too. I mean they are, I just don't know why.

I'm hopeless when it comes to Reno, aesthetically at least. But that's largely because he's wearing my favorite colors and reminds me of a cat (and I'm hopeless when it comes to cats). Strangely, Axel doesn't have the same effect despite the colors. Must be the cat then.

I'm gonna join the "they're all a little too feminine looking" club. I don't think that's much of a problem though, modern square designs have always been anime meets realism. I can always tell when I'm looking at an FF character, at least.

The only ones that are really "my type" are Rude and Biggs, though. I like a bit of facial hair, and FF tends to shy away from that because all the boys have to be k-pop idols half the time. I wouldn't say I want to punch anybody though (except maybe Reno...)

I wouldn't go comparing real people's appearance with video game characters though, that's just begging for self worth issues and lord knows I have enough of those.

I quite like how the game gives us equal opportunity eye candy, gender-wise =P In regards to the boys: I really dig fem Cloud (bottom) and Andrea (top), soft daddy Barret, angular twink Rufus, and Platoon Biggs.

It’s weird that Tseng looks 18 and not middle aged, and as far as nostalgia-googles go, my read of Reno’s original sprites/concept art made me imagine someone much more sunken-eyed and twitchy than ANTM over here. Rude is appreciably fucking hot, like, objectively.

Heidegger and Chocobo Sam has a rugged thing going on. But yeah as others have said they really leaned into aesthetic anime tropes but that’s been Nomura’s style since FF7, I’m just grateful that there weren’t a lot of belts and chains (side-eyes Kyrie).

Idk, they look like heavily photoshoped magazine photos in motion, and I find that a little uncanny xD

Theyre pretty enough that I understand the characters are hot, but my mind still has to fill in some gaps lol. Like, the fact they never make facial expressions that scrunch/crinkle in an unflattering way kinda makes them feel a little alien I guess.

I think FF7 is more of an example of Nomura's early character design work... and he hadn't experimented with different character designs as much as he would in later titles. Most of the guys in FF7 who look "pretty" have a very statuesque build... IE: long and lean and not overly muscled... and that build is often associated with woman more than it is with men. However, Barret and most of the Shinra Executives don't have that build either. So he was playing around with it even back then...

I think there should be a difference made between characters that really are teenagers at the time of the game and characters that aren't teenagers looking too feminine. Like... Squall and Vaan don't look so much "feminine" in my mind as they do "boyish", like they haven't finished filling out yet. Which... given that they are teenagers is how they should look. And neither Squall or Vaan has that statuesque build either. Their overall build is too muscled and compacted to give that feeling. Laguna on the other hand... heh...

The thing is... Nomura's later stuff has... a lot of male character designs that aren't a variety of that statuesque look. Wakka, Auron, Snow, Sahz, Noel, Gladio... he's got plenty of muscled guys who don't look overly feminine. I just don't see most people thinking they look cute the way they think his statuesque guys do.

I think the "pretty" ones just attract a certain sort of attention. Like teen idols designed to draw out that sort of fangirl response. It can also seem odd to be gushing over someone who's more like a father/uncle. But even the muscled ones look prettier than those in other video games imo.

Also, as much as I'm guilty of gravitating towards "prettiness", for ff12, I find Balthier and Basch more appealing than Vaan despite Vaan fitting more into the "pretty boy" type? Though they're rather pretty too...

One things I've always really liked about contemporary Final Fantasy (VIII-onwards) is the artistic endeavor to find the most elegant and beautiful takes on hyperrealistic humans. (at least, one subjective take on that) They've been doing a really good job, and Remake's designs are great for that reason. So yeah, as a straight man who views guys through a non-sexualized lens, I'm a big fan of the designs. I don't view them as too feminine at all - most of the male characters represent a polished version of masculinity that I think is really interesting. Rufus is the most attractive man in Remake, by the way - going on a limb with that one. Barret's got the best and most kind eyes, and Cloud's got the best balance between rugged masculinity (his musculature, his fighting style, attitude, etc) with grace (his hair flow, eyes, face shape, complexion, etc)

This was true back in the Amano days where muscular men would be decked out in elaborate make-up and outfits, too - but it all feels very masculine in nature despite the social norm.

(ironically, outside of FF, I don't really want every character to be attractive - as Licorice said, I appreciate Ghosts of Tsushima just has normal looking people. But I guess it's part of the "fantasy" in Final Fantasy for me)

Now, I do think that all the guys lost a little bit of edge compared to the OG FFVII. But that's only because Square's been doubling down on this whole pretty human thing.

Double Growth
I don't think Tsushima-style "real humans" would improve FF, personally. The issue is more FF (and Japan)'s lack of variety in protagonists ALWAYS being boyish and 'pretty'. A designer from Sega last week observed while praising Tsushima that such a main character would never get approved on a Japanese game. THAT'S more the "issue" than anything else. That it's a foregone conclusion that no other kind of protagonist would even be considered. (hello Vaan over Basch) And yes I know the West has it's own tropes, but...well, the Tsushima protagonist was approved, yeah? lol

I don't experience much sexual attraction to guys, but honestly I've never been one to be 'turned on' by any animated characters. Like I can acknowledge that Tifa is "hot" because of her design, but I would be unable to 'fantasize' about her if I tried. I dunno what it is, lol. So they're on a roughly even playing field for me with the men. I like my RPG characters to look cool, so I don't need gritty realism, but you don't want trying too hard either.
I think Obsidian is right that hte remake hearkens back to Nomura's more simplistic OG FF7 designs, which is really cool of them. But as for who I would consider the most attractive men in the game, yeah, Barret, and then Cloud, and probably Rufus.
Andrea looks good too, but he amuses me in that he looks like male!Shepard if Bioware character models weren't so weird looking

Well this is a fun topic! This also feels like confession time. I'll try to touch on all the discussion points listed above.

- My experience is limited to the Remake (and a little XV) but I would say that the men in this game are most definitely easy on the eyes. Although I'd have to admit that their near perfect aesthetics would be a bit unnerving in real life. But even so, I have to say I do find them to be incredibly hot.

- I can't really pinpoint what makes them all so attractive to me, but if I had to pick something about all of them, I'd say its their eyes and (for most of them) their slim muscular build. They all seem to have perfectly toned physiques.

- That being said, I do think they are too pretty to be realistic. Except for Biggs, who is more handsome than pretty so he actually seems realistic to me. Even Rufus isn't too over-the-top ( I could easily imagine a real life rich boy looking like that – minus all the crazy belts of course!) Also, Barret isn't too unrealistic to me either, at least in the face (his oversized muscles are another story).

- Thinking so much about the attractiveness of these “people” does make me ponder my own appearance. I always imagine insanely attractive men to be with equally attractive women (Exhibit A: almost every FF woman) So in comparison, I don't feel like I'd measure up to any of them (ie I'd never be able to snag a man that good looking in real life). I've never had a boyfriend/been in a relationship, which has always led me to question my own attractiveness anyway. But at the end of the day I'm well aware that these guys aren't real, I will never look like an FF woman, and I will never meet a man that looks like these guys, so all thoughts on this point are basically moot.

- I'd say the characters I find the most attractive would be the Turks and Rufus. I guess I'm just a sucker for a man in a suit. Also, I think Leslie is quite fine, but he doesn't get mentioned much.

- All that being said, I still find them all painfully beautiful and if I ever met any of them in real life I'd probably go weak in the knees (but that's probably just a side effect of being single for so long so don't judge me!)

Honestly...

wow there is no way to say this without it coming across as creepy as hell

armpit hair would go a long way.

ngl the hair follicles on Barret's arm got me a little hot n bothered

I just... don't feel like these characters are capable of emitting any sort of odour.

Like, when Tifa makes the comment about needing a shower........ my brain can process the horniness of it because it's a panned away shot of her saying it, so I can process, "yeah hot." When I think of a facial close up of her saying something like that, I'm more inclined to think "wtf you're a porcelain doll, don't try and convince me that you have pores that actually emit liquid."

Suffice to say, I'm not really a fan of the 3D porn that gets made of these characters :awesome:

Them in illustrated form is a whole different matter :monster:

Oh em geee *rubs hands* A thread for me!!!

Okay, first of all, what I will recount is a process of twenty years of being in this fandom (I've seen some shit), so along those two decades there has been a development, not only in the games, but also in me.

What makes FF boys visually attractive to thousands of players?

That they are designed exactly for that. FFVIIR has a wide array of characters, each with their own charm. Before that, there was FFXV, were EVERYONE ranged from pretty to ruggedly handsome.

I remember people complaining about XV, that there weren't females in the group, that it lacked representation, yadda-yadda. I was pretty happy about a game with a group of four dudes, and each one is modeled to apeal someone. Do you like boys with emo aesthetic but a dorky side? Noctis is for you. Do you preffer a punk-wearing, easy going, boy, but who is actually an insecure puppy who only needs live? You've got Prompto. You want a big, beefy dude who will treat you as a princess? Gladio says hi. Want a perfect gentleman who is always impecably groomed, knows how to cook and housekeeping? Here's Ignis. And the ten year gap only made them all hotter, if that was possible.

And then there's the rest of the cast and, for the very first time, men above 30 looked good in a FF. Cor Leonis is a looker even at 54, and Ardyn... what to say about him? They managed to design a man with harsh facial features AND good looking at the same time, just like many men you could find out here.

I'm not talking about the movie because that case was less about designing the characters and more about finding an actor/model who fitted the creators' idea. But if I were, I'd tell you it's the same thing: that there's a character for almost every taste, and none of them fit the bishonen stereotype.

Do you find FF boys handsome or do you tend to think they look unrealistic and way too feminine so you feel like punching them in the face?

They ARE handsome, be them bishonen or not. I don't feel like punching them, poor things. You don't ask to be born with gorgeous silver hair and thick eyelashes that would make a drag queen green with envy :awesome:

If you do find them handsome, does it make you feel bad about your own appearance (e.g. ugly, unfit, unworthy, etc.)?

FFVII was my very first FF and my very first videogame. Back in late 90's there was the manga aesthetic and I'm no ashamed to say that, while other girls went bonkers for singers/actors, my thing was videogame and anime characters. My reasoning when they called me weirdo was: These fictional characters are as out of reach for me as those singers are from you. A smile still creeps to my face when I remember the murderous glances from my classmates that followed those words, and a few seconds later they were yelling a barrage of excuses (they REALLY thought they could end up dating the guys from Take That or the Backstreet Boys, lmao).

Now... while I know how to apreciate the beauty of FF characters (specially since drawing/painting portraits is my thing), I'm no longer a teen.

I've spent my life being overlooked/rejected/dumped by boys who could never hold a candle next to any FF boy or man (forget the bishonen, I'm talking about the more realistic, rugged up ones), neither in terms of physical appearance, nor in personality or quality as human beings (and let's not talk about having a well-attuned moral compass, or even knowing what it is). That makes you think long and hard about your real worth and what men around you really value or demand from a woman and what they have to offer in turn. The answer was pretty gloomy, I shit you not, but that's a matter for another thread.

Do you enjoy playing a character who has muscles of steel but a baby face? (A dig at Cloud or Vaan, for instance.)

I don't care about how the character looks, as long as the writers have done their job making said character interesting or relatable. This said, if I were to talk strictly about eye-candy, I'd say that I prefer a muscles of steel guy with a manly face.

Are you attracted to any of the characters in particular (aesthetically, platonically, romantically, or sexually, if that's not too personal to share), and why?

I said this before, that when I was a teen I used to like fictional characters and favour them over singers and actors. One of the reasons was that fictional characters were always what you saw in the screen, while singers and actors would always have "surprises", if you know what I mean.

But with time, I grew up and I supose things changed.

I know this might rub people the wrong side, but this is my experience: While playing Dragon Age Inquisition, I completed the romance arc with a certain character, which ended in a wedding. Suddenly I realized this: "I'm a +35 woman who has never seriously dated anyone and never been in a relationship, and I'm using videogames as a way to experience something that might never happen to me. I fact, this might be the closest I'll ever come to being told "I love you" by someone, and it's just a bunch of pixels with a pretty texture slapped over them, voiced by an actor who already has a family, and following a script writen by people who aren't thinking of me, but of all the demographic group I happen to be in."

And, after having a good, long cry, I decided I would never, ever follow any romance subplot on any rpg, no matter how tempting it might look.

So no, I don't do that anymore. I don't even search for pairings when looking up fanficts, and I don't write romance (or what passed as such. Really, my attempts at it were laughable, and I think that's one genre I'll never master). Heh, I've even decided on not participating on various zines because they dealt with pairings. That stuff doesn't appeal to me anymore, and I don't know why :(

HOWEVER, that doesn't mean I don't apreaciate the beauty of some characters, or their badassery and, through them, I've discovered how I have changed myself. So that, if twenty years ago I squealed over the most feminine-looking guy, no matter how much carnage he sowed, now I'd rather be head over heels for a guy who was well-spoken, intelligent and with a good heart. Then again, such man would never settle for something like me, but remember that we are talking hypothetically :awesome:

:properhug:

I tend to have the opposite reasoning because I'm asexual. I get... a good laugh out of playing characters that aren't interested in romance at all but still like everyone platonicly. This tends to lead to romantic sub-plots in games with variables playing out very awkwardly...

One thing I won't deny is that FF character's wardrobes usually are... very indicative of their wearer's personalities or circumstances. This even holds true when you get characters that dress the opposite of their character type which keeps things interesting enough to pay attention to. There's also always at least one peice of clothing in a game that I would at least like to try on at least once IRL just because it looks so good. And... that's not true for a lot of other series.

I generally think in terms of 'is this a good design' and 'is this a bad design'. I'm too distracted by Rufus' belt skirt thingy to care about his face.

Romance plotlines get very weird, your choices tend to be 'be a complete prick' or 'be deeply in love.' I accidentally romanced Kaidan in ME3 despite not actually wanting to. So I get into romances by virtue of being too polite to say fuck off. I honestly found it kind of creepy to have Shepard be able to hit on their entire crew.

Biggs is so classically male-model attractive that I can sometimes hardly believe that he exists in a Final Fantasy game. :wacky:

He looks like a genetical experiment spawned from the genes of Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, Hugh Jackman and Zac Efron all spliced into one superhuman mass of Hollywood attractiveness. Biggs is a breath of fresh air amidst all the Cloud-style bishonen running around.

My intuition tells me that Biggs provides eye candy that is more grounded in real-life notions of classical male beauty. In this sense I am happy that he exists, equal opportunity eye candy and all that jazz. I hope Square puts out more character designs like this in the future.

I wonder if Biggs was less Bishi oriented due to him being designed by Ferrari rather than Nomura? Jessie doesn't quite fit the usual mold either, and Wedge is the sort of character you never see get such a big role in FF usually. Here's hoping the trend continues.

Also, though he might not be the most conventionally attractive, Wedge is totally the most lovable.
