Explain this line....

While at the Forgotten Capital, Cloud has a flashback (I think) of being upstairs at 7th Heaven with Tifa, Rude, and Reno, imagining (?) that he is hearing Aerith say "Dilly dally shilly shally" (unless Tifa is saying it? Can't quite tell if her lips are moving or not). Anyway, the dialogue goes something like this:
Aerith - Dilly dally shilly shally
Reno - I think she wants you to move on.
What does this mean? Can he hear Aerith too? How does he even know about the LTD? Is he referring to Tifa, and is it mere dramatic irony that his words could also refer to the Aerith of Cloud's vision? Or is it, in true FF tradition, merely a bad translation of something like, "She wants you to get a move on and bring Marlene home in time for supper?"

All replies valued.

I don't think it's so much Reno could hear Aerith, but that he heard Tifa say it, and said that he thinks he wants her to move on.

Also, the Japanese version has Tifa and Aerith both saying "Dragging, dragging" as an onomatopoeia, which makes a bit more sense with 'She wants you to move on' because it's more like 'she wants you to move on from this heavy burden.'

Yeah, I always saw it that Tifa was saying, "Dilly dally shilly shally" in that scene with the Turks.

Personally, I like the translation of "oh poor me". Go Aeris!

That's not really how the dialogue goes, Reno only says "I think she wants you to move on, man." After Tifa says that during the first time they show the 7th Heaven scene. Cloud hears Aeris say it only after he flashes back to 7th Heaven and he's about to "wake up" back in the Forgotten City.

Well, technically, "she wants to you move on" does make sense with dilly dally. As that is what dilly dally means, I just don't know why they added "shilly shally." Just have her say dilly dally twice, or "Dragging, dragging, always dragging" (It fits, same amount of syllables).
I try to give them a bit of a break as onomatopoeia is kind of a weird thing to translate (I didn't see very many subs that got it right either), but I just can't figure out the "sh" ones...

To me, dilly dally means to drag one's feet physically, whereas shilly shally means to be unable to make up one's mind or come to a resolution ('to be or not to be')./

Your answers make sense, but even so, when exactly did Reno gain so much insight into Cloud's, and Tifa's, interior lives?

Not really insight..more like direct observation. It's not hard to see or understand when you see how Cloud is acting towards Tifa, and vice versa.

I would have gone with, "You're such a drag Cloud"... works for me anyway :P If not, just dragging would work too.

But I hereby nominate Dilly dalley shilly shally for one of the worst lines in an English dub ever, and I've seen 4Kids version of One Piece. (Karoo sure was a lucky ducky)

I always though dilly-dally as like... shirking your responsibilities to do something pointless. Like going to the movies instead of writing a paper (*cough*). So it makes sense... it's just stupid sounding, esp. with the shilly shally.

You haven't heard many english dubs apparently.

Dilly dally is out of place, but it's far from the worst. And the source material isn't even that much better in the first place.

While the AC dub isn't the pinnacle of anime dub quality, they really did their best regarding that line.

Tifa for all intents and purposes, was making loud, non-sensical sound effect noises ala Larvell Jones from Police Academy to make a point to Cloud. Save for re-writing the entire line, they had to go with something that somewhat mirrored the scene.

Cloud: I'm not fit to help anyone...not my family..not my friends..nobody.

Tifa: EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEK!!!!!!!!! BOOOM!!! WOOO HOOO WOOO HOOO WOOO HOOO WOOO HOOO!!!!!!

Cloud: @_____@ Wha...?

Tifa: You're crashing Cloud. You're crashing hard like a car skidding into a tree.

Cloud: ......

Reno: I think she wants you to...oh fuck it. She's out of her fucking mind. *walks out of the room with Rude*

The odd thing is, this is common in Japanese. I'd use an example but the most commonplace one I can think of is related to porn, which probably shows how much Japanese/what sorts of Japanese crap I read. :monster:

But it's totally normal to say something like "His hair is poofy-poofy" in Japanese, but that makes absolutely no sense in English and sounds stupid.

Exactly. So people really need to cut that line some slack. It'd sound ridiculous either way unless the dub took a heavy hand and just totally re-wrote the entire dialogue there. And then people would whine about them re-writing the source material :monster:

They were screwed either way, really.

An excellent example in my mind is someone describing flan and parfait, and describing the onomatopoeia of its qualities. Flan is 'puni puni' which is the sound of something jiggly and bouncy.

Okay so throw some lines at me from dubs in the 80s then. I have a hard time believing you'll find one worse than "I'll say Karoo was a very lucky ducky."

EDIT
oh hey there's a page two...

hey Mako.. you rock XD

Personally, I'd love to see them use a different translation of "dilly dally shilly shally". I think that line sticks out like a sore thumb. Square has a habit of throwing in cheesy lines like that for no good reason though.

I guess part of the problem is, if they redid the line, the lip-sync wouldn't match anymore.

Meh it's not like you can really see her say it. I personally would rather they use something more suited than worry about perfect lip syncing.
