Quick question, Glaurung, what does the Spanish dub say in the "I feel lighter..." sequence? Just curious.

Frankly it seems like poor writing even from the Japanese perspective. After all, even Cloud looks at Tifa like she's lost it.

The Spanish goes like this:

Cloud: "Me siento aliviado." (I feel relieved)
Tifa: "Huh?"
Cloud: "He conseguido quitarme un peso de encima." (I could take a weight off my mind)

Instead of the "I feel lighter. I lost some weight over that Dilly-dally." (God, I didn't know they repeated that so many times )


And I think Cloud looks at Tifa that way because: A) He didn't espect her to tell him off; B)He's scared of her telling him off (didn't you see how Reno wanted to get away from that place just in case Tifa got too angry?)

Yeah well its because in Japanese he references dragging there. Which is why they probably should have just had her accuse him of always dragging in English, but whatever.

I never minded all the motherlyness in the FFVII compilation, since really, it's been a thematic element from the original game. In fact, I always wanted to do a write up on the "mothers" of FFVII but cba.

If I understand it right, what Tifa says (zurzuru zurzuru) in that scene isn't even words, exactly. It's a sound that suggests a heavy weight being dragged. To make sense of that as it applies to english, let's say you wanted to equate someone to a pig, cause you know, either they deserve it or you're a bastard/bitch who gets off on insulting people. Honestly who isn't now and then? Or constantly for some folks. Now, being lazy as well, you don't wanna form a complete sentence like "You're a pig!" so instead you just snort, y'know, piglike. No words needed. Now I honestly don't see how zuruzuru zuruzuru sounds like anything being dragged... but this is still how understand it.

Am I wrong?

When looked at that way, with the implication being that he is dragging a heavy weight around (hence zuru zuru) the line about him "losing some weight" or the sub-titled version I always saw "I think my burden has lightened" makes a lot more sense outright, what with the dragging metaphor. But yes, I agree they had to replace it with something, since not many would actually know this outside of Japan realistically. So take your pick, something silly, or something more literal like the "Dragging... dragging... always dragging!"

As for Reno seeing what Tifa meant, well if she was basically stating that Cloud is dragging too much weight around, he can either think Cloud needs to lose weight, get a smaller freaking sword, or understand its a metaphor for emotional baggage weighing him down, right?

For the record, since I prefer sub to dub any day, when I saw Cloud dragging the Buster Sword away from Zack's corpse at the end of CC, I found myself sadly saying "zuru zuru, zuru zuru" cause come on? So symbolic.

No no, Reno couldn't hear that. The first dilly dally shilly shally was Tifa talking, not Aeris. Then the second time when Cloud's with Vincent, then Aerith is the one that says that. From what I can tell, Vincent can't hear Aerith.
