Typically "senpai" is translated as "sir." I've never seen someone running around saying "senior," and if they did they probably rode the short bus to school.

Does Ajito mean "their base" or is it a name for the Forgotten City? Because those subs play it both ways.

Senpai usually translates into the person's name or Mr. InsertLastNameHere.

When localizing subs you have to think about what we say in our own society. In the English world we don't call upper classmates anything but their name. What we do, do though is we change our tone of voice when talking to someone older, so we reflect this in subs by putting very proper English.

It's the same situation as when some translators will translate "nii-san" to the person's actual name. Because in English, we don't say brother unless it has some kind of deeper meaning, like a cult, mafia, or joking around.

Gotcha. Since I'm still a bit of a n00b to translations, I genuinely appreciate the input. I've enjoyed your work (particularly on the Crisis Core scenes) long before I joined up here, so I will definitely take your input into consideration as my work evolves.

I respect what you're saying, SilentTweak. From my point of view, it doesn't sound right to hear the expression "nii-san" - which most anime fans will know means 'brother' - but hear the character's name pop up. One fansub I watched used nii-san without even translating it. Anyway, I do agree with you that it should be localized as naturally as possible, and I also believe there should be a limit to using character's names where applicable.

It's just really annoying to read a million translation notes. Like every minute a new one pops up.

Oka-san: Mother
Odo-san: Father
Gohan: Rice

Freaking annoying. When the translation could've just simply put the word in the sub.

Imho, I should do a sub where all instances of 'mother' are replaced by 'Cthulhu', prepended with 'great', 'dead', or 'dread' at random intervals.

Also, fyi, trying to convert a 1080P movie to DVD doesn't work properly using ConvertX, the movie becomes choppy.

Ok, since I was so deeply disappointed with the English dub for this movie and the mediocre subtitles floating around, I decided to sit my ass down and give it some justice.

The translation may not be as exact as I would've wanted, but my focus was on fixing the weak dialogue and matching it with the voice-overs' delivery, so I had to compromise. The intention was to make the English subtitles really fuse with the Japanese and hopefully, improve the content of the movie.

Tell me if I‘m onto something.

So you're trying to make a better dub? Making subs without proper knowledge of the context isn't usually a good idea.

That's generally a valid point, tho the "proper knowledge of the context" doesn't fly in this case at all, since the movie was dubbed, subbed, commented upon by a shit load of sources. In any case, take it or leave it, I only made it for myself, but thought I'd share if anyone's interested.
