Yeah but without the "Jump" ability he somehow never feels like a real dragoon. Nor does Tifa ever feel like a real monk without Chakra abilities, or Yuffie a thief without the aid of materia. As far as I'm concerned in FFVII and VIII everyone is a red mage.

Chakra abilities are Tactics and later monks.
FF1, FF3, FF4 and FF5 monks were much more direct with just Focus and Kick at best.
Sabin had the blitzes, sure, but that's sort of what the slots combo system and Zell's Limits are supposed to emulate, and I don't think anyone will deny Sabin/Mash 'Monk' jobhood.

Cid, because he's flawed, grumpy, weatherbeaten and foul mouthed, and also because he's quite strong - unlike some other characters I never felt like giving him a shitload of materia had an adverse effect on his physical power.

I also like Freya though, she was in my party as much as possible, again because she was strong and I like her backstory.
