[FF6] explain the War of the Magi to me

In as great detail as you can, please. I'm especially interested in how it ties into people like Relm having magic powers naturally.
Thanks!

From what I can recall-

The 3 Statues (Poltergheist, Goddess & Doom) were at war with each other. Each of them granted magical powers to other living things, creating Espers. The war carried on and on, and the Statues could see it was going nowhere. So they had themselves sealed away, and gave the Espers free will.

The magic-using humans were discriminated against, so they all moved off to Thamasa. The Espers sealed themselves behind the Sealed Gate.

Actually, the Espers were once humans transformed by the magic of the Triad. So really there were three types of combatants: Esper, Magic-infused Hume, and Hume.

The War of the Magi was a different war than the War the Warring Triad/Three Goddesses fought.

The Warring Triad created Espers from humans to fight for them, against each other. Only after the Warring Triad had stopped their War amongst themselves, turned themselves to stone, and gave the Espers their free will did the War of the Magi eventually happen.

There was a time of peace where Espers and humans lived side by side, as said by Ramuh in Zozo. The only time this could have happened was in between the Warring Triad's War and the War of the Magi, thus separating them as two distinct events. Humans wouldn't live side by side peacefully with mindless killing machines, and all the Espers escaped the human world after the War of the Magi.

Also, the Espers had free will during the War of the Magi(as shown in the Odin flashback), meaning that the Warring Triad's War was already over at that point.

Yep, good work! The game doesn't do the greatest job at setting them apart, but they are indeed two events. The Warring Triad conflict was deity and esper vs. deity and esper, and is incredibly distant and almost mythical, and the War of the Magi was basically a massive world war with both humans, magi, and Esper involved with various alliances of all three.

The humans and Espers were never in a simple Human Vs. Esper type conflict with each other, the War of the Magi had both races allied and pitted against each other in various nations and states all over the world.

humans took magical powers from Espers.
I've always wondered how they managed to do this. Terra has magical powers because she's half Esper, but Celes and Kefka (and Magitek Knights in general) are a product of extensive research and technology.

Strago says that humans used Magicite to become infused by magic. Is the main difference that the Magitek researchers didn't have access to Magicite? I suppose also that your party repeats the same process used in the War of the Magi by using Magicite and learning spells. So if anyone of them had a kid, that child would also be able to use magic as a descendant of the new Magi, albeit something diluted like Sketch or Lore.

The source of the mix-up, then, is that the party in Final Fantasy VI is given Magicite by Espers, so the Espers effectively provide magic to humans in this case in order to avoid becoming involved themselves. But in the War of the Magi, it is heavily implied that humans began to kill Espers for Magicite in order to learn magic.

Well. Yeah. Thanks for the thread guys.
