DLPB, do you...
like FFVII?
...eh...just a question.
It is to me the greatest game of all time. It has a story which is second to none in games and it got most things spot on. It is like The Good The Bad and The Ugly, you know that film? Well, it is like that. Something you know you are in the presence of epic.
But despite all its greatness, it does have some problems. If I wasn't a fan of the game, I would not be so involved spending hours of my time repairing the translation, game menus and FMV's. 2 of those mods are completed.
FF7 had some minor and some serious issues. As someone who loved the game, I feel a certain obligation to do my part to sort them out. If I didn't care, I wouldn't bother. It is my passion for FF7 which drives me.
Saying that, I hate the sequels, the prequels and canon as it is a nasty little cash in which dilutes the original epic. You cant make a standalone story which is finished work by suddenly deciding you will expand on what you originally wrote.
It is extremely hard to do and I would not ever attempt it. Sadly, Squenix did. For cash. The result is a mish mash of retcon and nonsense. Something that simply should not have happened. Originality is key. FF7 was done. Just like Terminator 1 and 2 were.
It annoys me that FF7, even in it standalone form has some real issues which I will now list:
1. Translation was bad
2. Need a difficulty mode. It was too easy.
3. Materia was not planned more, so its use in game is often limited.
4. Hack and slash is too often deployed because they did not make better use of elementals and the battle mechanics.
5. Some parts of the story are poor (like Cait), or not explained well.
6. They ran out of time and certain things were left out, like 1 letter sending quest.
7. Breath of Fire 3 is an example of what an RPG should aspire to in terms of gameplay. In that, puzzles need to be a greater part of FF games. It makes gaming fun.
8. Graphics shoddy, animations basic.
9. Geared to a lower age group, I personally prefer it to be darker and maturer in tone. I would have Aerith bleeding, and soldiers screaming, more graphic decapitations from Sephiroth when he executes people (it does not have to be shown in full detail). That's a personal improvement I feel could be made, as long as it is used sensibly. I prefer it to be more geared to realism.
10. More games at Gold saucer
11. Ability to skip FMV and summons
That's off the top of my head. What they did get right was the balance between story and gameplay, most of the story, tone, music, and dramatic impact. No silly battles with sephiroth that last for ages in cutscenes.
It is my favourite game but it needs some improving.
It also needs making into a 3 hour film with a proper director at the helm. I'd do it, well I could certainly help keep it on the tracks (Lucas' problem is he has too much power and too many yes men). It would need some changes from what happens in game but it could work and I think it could be a very very powerful film. Sadly, AC is about 1000 AU away from intelligence. It needs care, attention to work. It isn't easy to get FF7 right in a film but it can be done and I think it could be made to work with a general audience.
Aeriths death for example, would be something that really works to stir emotion in an audience. VII can work on the big screen. It has something to offer...
The reliance on Nuclear power
Self discovery
Death
Life
Spirituality
technology
Powerful money making companies
War
Power
Corruption
Redemption
Loss of loved ones
Struggle
Good and Evil
All of these themes and more are present in VII, in the background sometimes to the bigger story of Jenova and Sephiroth and Cloud. If planned properly it can be brought to life.
