Go ahead, click on this link:

http://www.xbox.com/ja-JP/games/f/finalfantasy4/

Notice that Microsoft Japan's server appends a "details.page/" to the URL. Now try a different one; replace "finalfantasy4/" with "finalfantasy5/", gibberish, or anything else. No "details" are appended.

What does this mean? A "finalfantasy4" is registered on Microsoft Japan's Xbox 360 web page for some reason -- and we'd be willing to guess it might represent a forthcoming Xbox Live Arcade port of Square Enix's recent cell phone RPG Final Fantasy IV: The After. Just last week, Microsoft stated the following in its press release concerning Square Enix's first two XBLA releases, Yosumin and Crystal Defenders: "Beginning with these two games, Square Enix plans to release a steady stream of its popular titles -- as well as original content -- on Xbox LIVE Arcade". Both Yosumin and Crystal Defenders are ports from mobile platforms, so it's not such a stretch to imagine The After might be next.

Final Fantasy IV: The After is a direct sequel to FFIV, written and directed by original creator Takashi Tokita. A serial RPG in twelve chapters for the Japanese cell phone services (iMode, Yahoo!, and EZWeb), The After stars Cecil and Rosa's son, Ceodore, and takes place a decade after the events of the original game.

Honestly, if it comes on Live and not PSN, SE are full of it and are on Microsoft love bed.

First off, why would they release it on Live? How many FF games have been on a microsoft console...none.

If it were to be released on anything it would make sense to be on PSN and the Wii thing. FFIV was on the DS and GBA, as well as on the original playstation.

I loved FFIV so if I cant play it, Im going to be pissed.

I dont find it fanboyish when they say they want to release stuff on as many consoles as possible to get their products to as wide an audience as possible. Plus, I dont have a 360, hence why else it would make me mad. Im not going to buy an entire console for one game on Live.

That is rather surprising. Them using X-Box Live to put their mobile phone games up to play for the west.

And it'd definitely be a break from their usual Sony/Nintendo alliance. I wonder why they chose X-Box Live?

Well Nocturne, don't think of it as getting an X-Box Live for one game. There are plenty of other games that are probably worth it to try if you *do* invest in a 360. I was planning on getting one eventually anyways. Now I have another incentive.

There hasn't been a "Sony/Nintendo" alliance for SE since this generation started.

With them releasing so many games for the 360 and all, this isn't surprising at all.

That Crystal Defenders game is coming out on every current generation console, so if they were releasing something on Live I assume everyone else would get it (unless Microsoft pays them off :monster:).

The thing is, there are only two games on the 360 I even remotely want to play. One being Lost Odyssey and the other being Star Ocean The Last Hope, though I suspect that one will eventually get a PS3 release after it sells terrible.

I doubt it'll sell terribly. There are a lot of good RPGs out for the 360 so a lot of RPG fans already have them.

Actually, thats not true. The RPG's on the 360 havent been selling too well. The best one was either Lost Odyssey and I dont even think it broke a million.

Almost every other RPG on the console has sold less than 500,000 such as Tales of Vesperia, Eternal Sonata etc. RPG's tend not too sell too well on the 360.

Those games have been selling pretty well. The release of Tales of Vesperia cause the 360 to sell out in Japan.

The games haven't been doing badly at all. Honestly, it's got nothing to do with the console, JRPGS just haven't been selling as much this generation period.

Valkria Chronicles did sell very well despite being an awesome game.

It caused the 360 to sell out in Japan, yet that really isnt saying much. I think it sold 225,000 in Japan, and then barely sold anything in the US. It was similar with the other RPG's on the 360.

Though, like you said JRPG's havent been selling well this Gen either. Kinda sad IMO.

Like I said, it still isnt that much. It was like 170 some thousand I think, then sales dropped off considerably.

Whenever I go into a gaming or electronics store here, it's almost depressing to see how empty the 360 isles are. Everyone is by the Wii, PSP, or DS stuff at any given time. It's actually really funny.

I highly doubt SE would be stupid enough to limit the release to the arcade. 4 is one of the most popular games in Japan, and if they really wanted it to get out as much as possible, they'd hit the Wii shop and the PSN as well.

Unless you know, Microsoft threw tons of money at them to where they couldnt lose either way.

A distinct possibility.

I have a question, I apologize for my naivete, but what exactly is FF4: The After? I can infer some from the title, but what kinda product is it?

Dude, where do you live? It's complete opposite where I am. Over here the 360 is by far the most popular console for gamers, excluding the Wii. The PS3 is the least popular console, and the Sony aisles are always the least crowded. That's why I get why SE are releasing XIII on the 360 as well, it's a wise move.

It does how ever make me wonder just how many more sales would of been achieved if the game was released on a PS3.
The sell out of 360 suggests not many people had one there and probably already had a PS3. Now consider the people who did have PS3's , wanted to play vesperia but couldnt afford a 360 alongside with it.

I bet the sales would have been much much higher.
I bought a PS3 because i assumed there would be an ass load of RPG's on it just like the PS1 and PS2 and im sure aloooot of other people made the same assumption. I think if i developers take the plunge and actually make a RPG on the PS3(well lots of rpgs) they would see that sales would be awhole lot higher.

In short i think developers need to get off the asumption that everything just sells better on the xbox and start making games across all consoles. There a key contributor to the low sales issue of the PS3 to begin with.

yeah, if more games were released on the PS3, at least exclusively, there would be much better sales with the PS3. But the main thing is still it's price.

Which is why there should be. A game manufacturer being tied to a single console manufacturer is a cunt.

It's not so much being tied to one console, it's the fact that its a SEQUEL to a FF game that wasnt on anything microsoft. It would make much more sense to be on the Wii/DS (which I also dont have but do have a DS) or to a lesser extent the PS3/PSP.
