I can see this being shut down, but they'd be absolute tools not to get involved in something like this.

It looks pretty great.

Nice graphics. The "WANTED" Cait Sith poster at the beginning amuses me. I would play the demo but I don't have a controller for my computer, which is apparently needed.

Countdown to cease and desist from Square. 3, 2, 1...

It's such a shame that fans put such effort into these kind of projects, and there is this massive risk where no amount of sugar-coating, like their disclaimer above, is going to convince SE to live and let live.
(But, who knows)

Barret's gun is on the wrong arm though - maybe that'll be the main issue prompting SE to have it shut down :monster:

Ahem...

That looks impressive and I'm sure Squeenix will C&D it. (How can they be so accommodating of their fans with one hand and so dismissive with the other?) I just hope they make an update to Ehrgeiz. That was a seriously under-rated game.

Are they making money off it? Are they asking for donations? If not then God himself can show up and ask them to stop and they can laugh while shoving this thing called the Digital Millenium Copyright Act in his face. Black Mesa remade the entire game of Halflife, and Valve couldn't say anything.

Yeahhhhh... No.

SE throws lawyers at the DMCA like they are Amarant's pinwheels. No fan artist could afford to go to court, even if they had a good chance of winning.

That's why ya gotta keep that shit crazy secret.

Ahem... Pay no attention to my avatar and signature. La la la la.

How'd you get your sig to show up? :'(

Oh I'm salivating at the bit now, being from a lawyer family. Scary letters are probably just getting people to hide under their beds. If it were me, I'd let them take me to court and soak up the press. That's what Matel did to Aqua and it made them famous. Worse comes to worse, take the Final Fantasy trademark off it, call if Phinal Phantasia Septum or something faux-original and alluding, and you're golden.

The problem is, as I understand it and someone correct me if I'm wrong, that the instant you acknowledge the brand as Square Enix's, you're essentially shooting yourself on the foot. It's like saying: "Hey, I'm using their brand freely even though I shouldn't do it".

Of course, it's not like you're allowed to do it even if you don't mention it. It's like when you enter the US via plane and they ask if you want to attempt an assassination on the president. Trying (or succeding!) is already a crime. But doing so after saying you would not try and do that is worse because you lied about it, or something to that effect.

Either way, my take on this is that they're using the Final Fantasy name to promote themselves. They'll get the game going, they'll get a C&D letter, they'll make a fuss out of it, accepting it gracefully and they'll change the game to something else with the same mechanics. Voilà!! There's no way in hell they're hoping to get this out and exposing it so early.
