What do folks think of the new fog effects in this chapter? Visibility is reduced, which adds to the spookiness, but I kinda feel the level already had a good ambiance?

Haven't played it myself though.
In terms of atmosphere, the fog effects are pretty good, but I wonder if they've overdone it a little. It does give a bit of a different vibe also because the lighting is very diffuse, you don't have much of the hard light/shadow contrasts anymore. I think it's less "photogenic" as a result, because still images look a lot more washed-out.

Chapter 11 was excellent. I used to enjoy walking through Train Graveyard on the OG, but now it's something completely otherworldly, in the spookiest sense of the word.

I mean, I love trains, I love abandoned places, I love ghost stories, and I love blue lighting, so what's not to love about this chapter? Also, THE MUSIC. Everything is so incredibly atmospheric. And that Turk's theme remix at the end of the chapter? So goooooood.

The boss fight with the boss ghost was great, so easy and dynamic. I walked out of that area happy and proud... only to die on a bunch of rats, and ghosts, and some other creatures that attack you right outside the building. Ouchie ouch. But boss fights are amazing in this game, no joke. They forse you to come up with a strategy and utilize a lot of assets that you carry aka materia, abilities, etc.

It was a nice touch to have Tifa tell Aerith "We found you." Tifa will never know of how meaningful those words were to Aerith in that moment, but we the players understand
The park scene in Chapter 8 was so sad it made my eyes burn, but this scene here made me seriously tear up. Aerith feels so lonely it's heart-wrenching, but her feelings are always suppressed or hidden behind the cheerful facade, so it doesn't occur to anyone...

I'm also trying to imagine the way Cloud sees Aerith throughout the chapters. We players are always a bit biased as we've known these characters for years, for decades even, but they've only just met in the course of the story. "So it's this girl who aggressively markets her stuff in the middle of a military conflict, helps everyone around, talks to flowers and ghosts, and keeps tagging along despite me asking her several times to stay put. Weirdo. Oh, and she probably knows... things. But the girls seem to get on pretty well so ehhhh I don't mind... I guess?" :mon:

Tifa looks almost as naked without her gloves as Cloud does without his. It reminded me that we see Tifa without gloves in AC, but this is the first time we see FFVIIR Tifa in her normal outfit minus the gloves.
I second that :awesome:

I think I find the train graveyard frustrating now because much has been added, yet none of it explained. It used to be one of my favourite parts of Midgar; now, I just want to get through it as fast as possible.

I am assuming, by reading between the ellipses in the characters' dialogue, that Eligor is "the one who..." stole children (?) or at least kept their ghosts (souls?) trapped in the train graveyard. I think the 'ghosts' are the spirits of the trapped kids. I have no idea what the Ghoul is, or how it connects to the ghosts and to Eligor. It seems to be some kind of giant poltergeist that thinks attempted murder is a fun game to play with its new friends. Why Marlene's "ghost" is there when she's not dead is a mystery. Can we assume some or all of the other kids aren't dead yet either? I'd love to know where Eligor came from, how he managed to take over the train graveyard, what his purpose is in taking kids' souls hostage, and above all, what he is. A summons that went wrong, maybe?

This part of the Remake feels like it really belongs in a different game. That is, it gives the impression that it has meaning and significance, but doesn't really connect to the plot of the larger game - except we learnt that Aerith sometimes felt lost and lonely as a child, and she can talk to ghosts.

And what entity helps Cloud move the first engine? is it the Whispers, or Eligor the Black Wind?

Listen closely, there is meaning in my words.

Smooth Criminal
If you scan the Ghoul it says it's, "An aggregate of ghosts. The large amounts of baleful energy that result from this aggregation allows it to use telekinesis."

Marlene's ghost wasn't real. It was an illusion caused by the ghosts working from Tifa's fears and anxiety.

And Eligor is a monster. A demon. Something that feeds on fear and collects souls. "A ghastly fiend that haunts the train graveyard and feeds on human fear to grow stronger. It is a manifestation of the memories and sorrows that linger in the train graveyard."

Yes, it's the one responsible for stealing the souls of children and it wanted more souls so it tried to also stop Cloud and the others from reaching the Pillar because it wanted more death to happen as well. Aerith was a victim of its power and nearly got killed because it used her fear and painful memories to trap her and almost make her it's next victim.

I mean, the connection to the plot is its existence. What it shows us of the main characters. Not everything has to be explicitly connected to the meta-plot to be important, it was simply it's own thing meant to showcase the setting of Midgar and the background of a significant place. A chapter devoted to seeing the main characters interact in a unique situation and work together in a scary place all while also dealing with the tension of trying to make it back to the Sector 7 Slums in time.

In the OG it was literally 3 screens filled with annoying random mobs that did zero for the player except get you to grind for the upcoming boss fight. That's absolutely nothing. The Remake definitely made this chapter one of my favs due to what it showed and how it basically acts like a calm before the storm of the pillar collapse.
