In early development of FFVII, like so early that Aerith and Tifa were basically one character, it was considered that either Barret or the female protagonist would be killed in the game’s story. It’s not that Barret was ever “supposed” to be killed, it was just a potential idea tossed around during development. Same with Sephiroth and Aerith being siblings or Sephiroth having been Aerith’s ex-boyfriend, etc.

I wonder if maybe they decided to go back to some of those ideas

I could see them in some form as like homages/references to them, but the very fact that Barret getting stabbed is shown in the most recent trailer tells me said stabbing is not fatal.

Someone said that Aerith was shown getting stabbed in an OG trailer though. So it's not necessarily a non fatal wound for Barret

An OG trailer showed Aerith’s dead body being lowered into the water by Cloud. That’s significantly different I think. I don’t believe there was ever an OG trailer from the release year that featured Aerith’s stabbing itself IIRC.

If he does, how would the Dyne arc, and all of his post-OG appearances work (assuming the remake is canon to the compilation and the OG is entirely separate)? I’d be greatly annoyed if they killed him, both as a fan of Barret and from a narrative perspective - I’m already annoyed that he got the end of the Masamune to begin with, so thankfully it seems implausible.

I’ll be really interested to see that exchange with President Shinra, though.

Yeah, Kitase stated last month in interviews that the Compilation is the basis of canon for the Remake going forwards. And we’ve already seen characters from the Turks Side Story novella Nojima wrote appearing in trailers/promotional images.

Barret being stabbed is almost certainly a fake-out, especially since in the same trailer we literally see Barret in the getaway car. We know that has to take place after said stabbing scene since the backgrounds indicate it occurs in the Shinra Building.

I forgot about Dyne. That would change a lot. I wouldn't mind if that was an illusion into Barret's future. Maybe he gets killed off in a later part. I wouldn't mind that, as long as it happened after the Dyne arc

I don't think square is gonna kill Barret. Why would they? If they did kill him just for some new shock value, I really will just give up on the remake.

As long as they can make it work with the story of the remake, I don't mind new changes. With that said, I don't think they will do it either.

I really don't think killing the only major black character would go over well, especially since he doesn't die originally.

You know what, I don't wanna be paranoid about this for the next few days, so one of you spoi boys can just tell me: does barret die? No further context than yes or no necessary.

Yeah that's true. Also theo is one of the ones who saw the spoilers so he already knows anyway. I just know something wild happens at the end of this game that apparently ruined the whole thing for some people. I'm ready for Square's bullshit, but not if it means killing one of the main party like that.

I seriously wonder what they could have done that pissed off so many people. They couldn't have killed Aerith early - there's a render of her standing outside Midgar and it kind of messes with the plot too much. Plus, they're already gonna kill BWJ in this game.

Not that I want to know. I want to find out in the game.

I don't think it would either. I'm just saying I wouldn't hate if it did happen (as long as they did it right) He's actually one of my favorite characters. Especially because of his relationship with Marlene.
