SeeD Rank - 7

Apparently I have no attitude :monster:

Did you get the Battle Meter?

Yes.

Any trouble finding the "secret area" in the Training Center?

Yes. Training Center isn't very big :monster:

Did you get the Magical Lamp? Did you use it?

Yes.
Defeated Diablos the second time. First time things were going really well and I got him quite low on HP but then he started using physical attacks in rapid succession, taking out one character after the other. Second time I had Selphie Blind him :monster:

What rare cards have you gotten so far?

MiniMog (lost) Quistis, Seifer, Zell, Ifrit, Diablos, Siren, Angelo.

Did you give the Card Queen the MiniMog card?

Yes.

Did Laguna fall asleep while talking to Julia or just talk too much?

He fell asleep. I talked to everyone though and got the message from Kiros/Ward about Laguna talking too much and to try not to. Then also instead of sitting on chair I went to talk to Julia again and she gave him some wine.

Did you perform the train mission flawlessly or have to do anything over?

I messed up at code inputs/escaping guard detection a few times. I got excited at getting up to entering the first two codes correctly and got impatient after that :monster:

Did you take the cheap way out for the Gerogero boss fight?

No.
Lost the fight once because I forgot to re-junction Zell/Selphie (what do you mean Squall, I never listen to you!?) Well I forgot it didn't just mean re-check your GFs if you hadn't already been junctioning before, but to do it again anyway. Second time I won. Basically an OHKO on the boss from Ifrit, but before Zell did that Squall died, so I had to reload and do the fight a third time so all my GFs could get APs.

Did you visit Dollet again? What did you do there?

Yes. Talked with all the NPCs and played with the different dialogue options. Did the artist/grandson/little girl/dog/bone thing. Went to the pub. Did the things. Got cards, notably the Siren Card. Read the stuff in the pub. Nice Laguna tidbit. Pulled one over the poor Dollet soldier in the square. Saw the incompetence of the Galbadian grunts on the cliff. Was disappointed about not getting to fight the machines. Saved in the hotel.

Did you get the Girl Next Door magazine?

Yes. This whole thing quite amused me especially with the tour shop lady's info about Zone, and then I cracked up inside at how Rinoa oh so casually drops the hint about Zone liking naughty stuffs to Quistis.

What were your overall impressions of this chapter?

I had fun with it.

Random thoughts -

- CATS! Timber cats, Dollet cats, cats CATs!

- Transexual/gender person in Dollet pub, ok cool. Yeah, I remember this from before.

- Grandpa, you never play with me, you only play with girls *headdesks* Ok, so I never got this years ago. Oh my lost youth and innocence.

- What do I think of your train? Better than Rinoa's, oh I'm mean.

Laguna/Kiros/Ward are <3 Selphie is <3 Quistis is <3 Zell is <3 ('cause Armageddon Fist)

- TENTS! All the TENTS! Life Refine your Curagas! CURAGAs! All the CURAGAS! JUNCTION to all your HPS! Yellow HP mode, all your limit breaks.

- Current team is Squall/Selphie/Rinoa (walking her for Angelo moves, but only having Angelo learn a select few this run)

Finally! I've finished the first chapter. :D I know I'm behind but I'll try to catch up. And hey, this is further than I ever got on the playthrough of IX! :awesome:

What did you think of the opening sequence?
Well, I've heard that many think that it is really good, but I don't think it really is. I think it's interesting. I guess it is showing a bit what is going to happen later on, and it did get me interested about the characters and so on. But I think they could have picked better music to it. And at the same time as it gives you hints about what's comming, it still doesn't tell you really anything. :/ I mean most what you see is two guys fighting. Why? I don't know. So far I know that they were "training" and that they don't really get along. That's it? Oh and there's going to be a love story. And other characters. Wow.

How do you feel it compares to other FF opening sequences?
Well in my opinion this opening was more of an trailer for the game. For others the openings are the beginning of the story and this was very vaguely that. I wasn't impressed but I don't think there has been any other FF opening that would have impressed me so far. Well actually, I think the opening of VII is probably my favourite so far.

Did you read the information available on Squall's study panel or just head on out into the game?
I did read most of it. I like to be prepared. :D

What do you think of the overall aesthetic in this game (character models, backgrounds, technology, etc.) compared to other FFs?
I think it's interesting. I really like the background and I quite like the music too. I do like the character models as well, though it is kinda annoying how the faces are so pixelated that you can't make any sense of them. I think the aesthetic is really different compared to the other games. I do like the atmosphere it creates, it reminds me of the games I used to play as a child. :)

Did you start playing Triple Triad yet? What do you think of it?
I haven't yet. I was going to, but somehow I didn't get around to it. ^^'

Did you take the transfer student on the tour as she requested?
I did. :)

What time limit did you pick for the Fire Cavern? Were you successful with your first choice?
I picked 30min, because I had no idea how long it would take, but I was pretty sure it wouldn't take 40min. I was very successful with lots of time left. I guess I should have picked 20min instead. ^^'

Did you have any trouble beating the other time during the field exam?
I think I had a bit less than ten minutes remaining. If I had fought the thing for one more time, I probably wouldn't have made it.

How many times did you fight X-ATM092? Did you try to destroy it? Were you successful?
I think I fought it only twice. Or was it three times? Might have been. I'm not sure. :D I thought of destroying it during the first fight, but then I realised that it was hopeless and just ran. I would have not been able to beat it in the time limit.

Did you get the GF Siren?
I did. :joy: And when I draw it I didn't even know what it was. After the fight I was surprised to get another GF. :D

What do you think of the controls/exploration compared to other FF titles?
The controls are a pain in the ass! How many times am I supposed to learn new controls? I always press triangle when I want to go to the menu, because that was the menu button in IX at least. Might have been in VII too. Why did they change it? Why... :'(
And the exploration... Well, I think there was not much difference to other games, or was there?

What about the battle system?
The battle system seems fun, but really confusing. I enjoy the draw system, I think it's really fun. But I have really no idea how the limit breaks work. To tell the truth I'm not really sure how anything else than the GF's and abilities work. I probably have to watch the tutorials again... ^^'

Are you enjoying the story? What do you think of it so far?
It's interesting, I guess. Not much has happened so far. Nothing really does in the beginning of FF games. That's why I didn't really enjoy them at first, because the start of the game is so boring. But I have a feeling that I get to know more soon enough. I really want to know what's up with Squall And Seifer.

Anything else of interest stand out to you?
Why does Squall have to be so badass? I feel like he is meant to be another Cloud. I have to admit though that so far Squall is much better at being badass than Cloud was. :awesome:

Just a tip - you can change the controller settings in this game! It's in the menu under settings, I believe :) I changed mine straight away, haha.

What were your exam scores? How do you feel about your performance?

I can't remember all my scores (I actually got them when I played the last chapter because I wanted to know), but I ended up with Rank 6. I'm 7 now, it would be interesting to see exactly how what I did factored into the score, I know about a lot of things. Totally forgot to save the dog, for instance :(

Did you get the Battle Meter?

Yes, I never have before though, what's it do?

Any trouble finding the "secret area" in the Training Center?

Nope. Man Squall's a dick though.
Also, oddly, I didn't run into T-Rexaur. I didn't even think about it until after I finished the chapter. Kinda odd.

Did you get the Magical Lamp? Did you use it?

Yes, I don't believe I ever have before, but I knew about the blind thing. And it was fun to just wail on him with Limit Breaks. And so THIS is how you learn Enc-None

Did Laguna fall asleep while talking to Julia or just talk too much?

Just talked to much. What determines it?

Did you perform the train mission flawlessly or have to do anything over?

Yes sir. I always loved the train sequence. It does rely on some stupid train security, but the scenes are great and you can never go wrong with trains in my book.

Did you take the cheap way out for the Gerogero boss fight?

Yeah...I wasn't particularly planning to. In fact I wanted to draw more Double, but I kinda fed up with having to cure Silence, so I finally jsut chucked some feathers at him :monster:

Did you visit Dollet again? What did you do there?

Not yet...but I did take the train all the way there before I saved and quit, so I may yet. Apparently the main point of going there is for the Queen of Cards? I still haven't really gotten into the cards on this playthrough so far. *shrug*[/]

Did you get the Girl Next Door magazine?

Yes, haha. Too bad it doesn't teach Rinoa tricks like the Pet Pals does for Angelo :awesome:

What were your overall impressions of this chapter?

Good, Timber's a nice big town. There's a good bit of action and some intrigue at the end there. The debut of Succession of Witches which is such an awesome song.

Characters still aren't really doin it for me. Squall is Squall, Seifer is...an oddball. Difficult to follow his emotions and...very 90s. Zell and Selphie are both batshit crazy and Rinoa's kinda flaky.
S'all about Quistis, man.
I do like Rinoa's fancy chakram-crossbow thingie. To say nothing of her Shadow callback.

Another write up, it's lucky I'm on a week off so I can get through as much of the game in advance for theses chapters as possible, I might be non-existent on TLS from next week for a while due to late nights in work starting so if I can complete more than necessary I can have the write ups done quicker.

What were your exam scores? How do you feel about your performance?

Conduct: 20
I had 9 minutes left, after escaping from the tower, so no wonder I didn't get many points for this

Judgement: 30
I beat Ifrit pretty quickly, I kinda forgot how judgement was calculated until I looked it up at the end otherwise I would have just let the timer run down further.

Attack: 30
I only really fought battles that came along the way, I didn't really go out of my way to fight them, if I'd run around more I probably would have gotten a higher score.

Spirit 70
I escaped only twice during the whole thing, once when I got into a fight with a soldier before I fought Spider Bot as I wanted to keep as much of the time I had fighting it and the second time was the compulsary battle against it.

Attitude 80
I moved towards the radio tower once by accident before Seifer gave the go ahead...whoops.

Bonus 100
Beat the spider Bot XD

Seed Rank 6
Yeah I guess I'm pretty happy with getting Rank 6, oh I got bumped up to rank 7 on the way to Balamb the next morning and then got another Rank after completeing the Timber mission so I'm currently rank 8, I might take some Seed exam questions soon just to go a bit higher considering it's one of the only ways to earn a lot of gil quite quickly early in the game.

Did you get the Battle Meter?
This is actually the first time I've ever grabbed it, it's been one of those things I've always forgotten to get, not this time though. Force just FYI it shows how many steps you've walked and battles you've had, won, and escaped. It's not really that big a deal to be honest.

Any trouble finding the "secret area" in the Training Center?
Nope, poor Quistis though, there she is pouring her feelings out and Squall basically tells her he doesn't give a shit, charming fellow that Squall, you can practically see him rolling his eyes at her.

Did you get the Magical Lamp? Did you use it?
Yes I used it and Diablos makes a very nice welcome addition to my GF group, I did really struggle to get Demis for this in the end I allowed one party member at a time to draw form him while the other two focused on healing from his Graviga attacks, blinded him of course to prevent the physical attacks but healed just to be on the safe side.

What rare cards have you gotten so far?
Just Ifrit after I beat him and Diablos.

Did you give the Card Queen the MiniMog card?
UUuuummmmmm no???

Did Laguna fall asleep while talking to Julia or just talk too much?

Laguna's actions are based on whether you picked up the Timber Maniac magazine, I gotta admit Laguna falling asleep because he's drank too much is pretty funny, but I do prefer the proper scene of him just talking too much, so I didn't pick up the magazine.

Did you perform the train mission flawlessly or have to do anything over?

Flawlessly, I hate making mistakes on stuff like this, so I'm a perfectionist, it would have been nice to have a full FMV cutscene with all the character on top of the train, I dunno just think it would have been nice instead of the in-game graphics.

Did you take the cheap way out for the Gerogero boss fight?

God no, I had 100 beserks and Zombies to get for Zell, Selphie and Squall, the battle took over an hour to complete because I had to keep drawing Esunas to get rid of the slow and silence statuses but hey worth it again because they boost your stats quite nicely if junctioned.

Did you visit Dollet again? What did you do there?

I did visit it, I didn't do much, I got the potion from the doggy and talked to people, didn't play cards though.

Did you get the Girl Next Door magazine?

Yup, Squall you bloody pervert!

What were your overall impressions of this chapter?

OK Laguna is awesome, there I said it, I love him as a character, Selphie's crush on him is adorable. He's a bit of a dreamer, you can tell he doesn't really want to be in the army anymore, his leg cramping with nerves is adorable, I dunno I just really wanna give laguna a hug, he's such an easy going guy, he's funny and you can tell him, Kiros and Ward are no where near as ruthless as some other G-Soldiers.

Rinoa (Takes a deep breath) I'm not her biggest fan and I think she's quite possibly the worst main FF heroines to be created:

I think the way she came into the story was actually quite cute and I really liked the dance with Squall she even made him laugh and there was this air of mystery about her....fastforward the next day and you've got this unprofessional leader of a resistance group (come on she's definitely the leader even though Zone says he is), with a half baked plan, Zell is right the group don't exactly have it together and you can see the cogs turning in the three SeeDs minds telling them the plan is doomed from the start. You do have to admire Rinoa's passion, spirit and drive for what she believes in but does she have to be so childish about it.

The background info on what happened to Zone and Watt' fathers really hits just how bad it is for the people of Timber, in fact the whole Timber wanting to achieve independence strikes a cord with me. It's not the situation where I live is like that now, but back some 40 years ago there was definitely a war here over independence and I understand why they're fighting so hard, maybe I'm just being a little over dramatic in that sense but it does feel like I can relate in some way.

Speaking of the Timber mission, you almost get the impression that Cid kind of duped them into going, there's this almost "we've been had" atmosphere when they read the contract that Cid negotiated with Rinoa.

Seifer and the sorceress is very interesting, you can tell at the start he's trying to resist her, but she definitely seems to have some sort of hold on him, I think she probably knows, he wants to be this almost heroic figure and he ends up believing she can give him that instead of just make-believe childhood dreams. There's also this underlying element that the sorceress already is more dangerous and something everyone should watch out for, she already appears to have manipulated Seifer into going with her, so you wonder what else is really going down with her.

Current GF layout, there's been a slight change, Squall now has Shiva and Diablos, Rinoa has Ifrit and Siren and Selphie still has Quezacotl, my next GF will be going to Selphie. Also in terms of my party at the moment I normally keep a party of Squall, Zell and Rinoa, but I've chosen Selphie this time until a little bit later, her attack may be weak but she's got good magic potential and her Draw rate seems to be pretty good.

Rinoa as much as I dislike her character she is quite useful in battle and I've just realised what what Force said there about Angelo and Rinoa's partnership being a call back to Shadow and Interceptor but then I've always liked Angelo in battle but at the same time I often wonder how normal it is to fire your dog from your weapon and launch it in the air at enemies :monster:

Done.

Also because I'm shooting for getting the Lionheart as early as possible this playthrough. I've never gotten it on Disc 1 before. The earliest I ever snagged it was at FH.

  • What do you think of Galbadia Garden as comapred to Balamb Garden?
  • What do you think of Irvine?
  • What city/town is your favorite out of those you've visited so far? What do you like about it?
  • Did you solve the puzzle of the Tomb of the Unknown King? What do you think of its design?
  • Did you acquire the GF Carbuncle?
  • Did you find it difficult navigating the sewers?
  • What do you think of the story so far?

If I remember correctly, it's also determined by which magazine you pick up. There's one at the Balamb train station and one at the Balamb hotel. If you get the one at the station (or no magazine), Laguna will just talk too much. If you get the one at the hotel, he will fall asleep.

The two cancel each other out, so, for obvious reasons, most people only ever see where Laguna talks too much.

So, can any of you FF8 experts explain the Junk shops to me? I understand the tips at the beginning saying that they're largely not worth it, but still. Every time I go to one, if I click on one it just tells me I "already have it."
I seem to remember it having something to do with magazines, but I haven't found any others besides that first one.

So if its telling you you already have it, that means you currently have that weapon model.

It's not like a store in other FF games as such - weapons aren't something you can buy as items that have a quantity. The idea is that you have one weapon and you go to the junk shop to upgrade it. Like there's no Equip menu or anything, once a weapon is upgraded, that's it.

Each weapon has components that you need to find from enemies or card modding. The magazines tell you which components you need - if you've read the magazine in the item menu, the weapon will appear in the junk shop telling you what you need to upgrade. If you don't have the necessary items it'll appear greyed out.

However, you can get the items for a weapon and go to the junk shop and the weapon will be in the list even if you never read the magazine.

Any of the "weapons monthly" magazines that you pick up places a new weapon in the store slots.

But you don't need the magazines in order to create a new weapon just the items. For Example if you're trying to get the Lion Heart gunblade on Disc 1 you just need the following

20 Elnoyle Cards in order to card mod them into 2 Energy Crystals then ammo refine them into Pulse Ammo.

4 Dragon Fangs won from the Grendel monster

An Adamantine from the Scared Card or a Adamantoise monster.

Pulse ammo can also be gotten by mugging level 30+ Elastoids for laser canons in the second Laguna dream sequence and using the ammo refine ability, you'll need to mug 3 Elastoids as Laser Canon only refine to 5 pulse ammo though you might wanna mug a 4th to teach Quistis a very nifty bit of Blue Magic ability early on, that's much easier to do if you're like me crap at triple triad.

You just need to make sure you character's have an average of level 30, one you starr being able to draw Meltdown from Elastoids you can mug them for Laser Canon.

I didn't get Lionheart on this playthrough on disc 1, but I did get Punishment, Red Scorpion and Bismark :monster:

I've gone into plenty of detail on my write up about this particular chapter, so I'll have that ready to be posted soon :monster:

@Force: Yeah, they'll automatically come up on the Junk Shop screen once you have the components.

Once you get the magazines and read them you can at least see how many of each component you still need, that's only helpful though if you're planning on getting the stronger weapons later in the game as the more powerful weapon monthly mags don't become available until much later.

I just remembered that on my last playthrough when I beat Spider Bot it rewarded me with a Force Armlet when I defeated it that's why I didn't have to go out of my way looking for one for Rinoa's final weapon, this time I got an Orihalcon though which is less useful, I know the drop is random that's why I couldn't remember what I got the last time.

I'm finally starting my playthrough today :monster:

I'll commence at 7pm GMT, and I've decided to stream it, woo and all that. I'm going to embed the video so anyone who opens this page will hear noise and be like wuuuuuuuuut

EDIT: Well, my attempts to stream failed. I think my capture device is faulty - it worked for a bit when I changed USB ports then would cut off again shortly after. I would emulate but I really want to play it on my PS3, so I'm just going to play for a bit for now (might as well make SOME headway!) then do more later (streaming I mean). On the bright side this means I can play on my Vita for a bit, hooray!

BTW does anyone else get kind of weirded out by the supertight timeline of Disc 1? You get injured in a training exercize with Seifer in the morning then by the next day by lunchtime you are discussing Seifer's possible death at the hands of Galbadia after assaulting the newsstation.

Yeah, all of Disc 1 takes place in a very short timeframe. Something like two or two-and-a-half days. Really odd when you think about it.

Anyway, finally finished the first chapter over the holiday weekend. :monster: With 12:01 on the clock, I stopped playing Triple Triad and began the SeeD field exam.

What did you think of the opening sequence? How do you feel it compares to other FF opening sequences?

Stunning. Beautiful. Best in the series. The music and imagery make for quite the exciting, mysterious set-up. Some of the stuff with Edea seems a little oddly placed to me now (like the shot of her walking through the wall), but I guess they figured players would find it intriguing and it would make them curious as to what that was all about (which it does).
Did you read the information available on Squall's study panel or just head on out into the game?

Read everything.

What do you think of the overall aesthetic in this game (character models, backgrounds, technology, etc.) compared to other FFs?

I love it. FFVIII's world is my favorite, and I'm sure the presentation has a lot to do with that. It's the FF world I would most want to live in.

When I first played it, I remember thinking that the character models looked "wrong" for a while, being correctly proportioned as they are. XD FFVII had been my first FF, and I suppose I expected VIII to look much the same.

Did you start playing Triple Triad yet? What do you think of it?

Oh, you could say that. :awesome: Yes, been playing the hell out of it.

I got enough Blitz cards so that both Squall and Zell would have 100 Thundagas to junction to their elemental attack when I fought X-ATM092, as well as enough Abyss Worm cards that both could have 100 Tornados junctioned to their Strength stat.

I also went ahead (before the field exam) and remodeled Squall's weapon into the Twin Lance. I thought about going with Punishment, his second best weapon, but that would have consumed a Star Fragment. Seeing as Star Fragments don't go into his ultimate weapon but do go into Selphie and Irvine's, I decided to save it.

I have 16 Iron Giant cards, so with 3 of those modding into a Star Fragment, I already have all the Star Fragments I'm ever going to need (3 for Selphie's ultimate weapon, 2 for Irvine's) and one Iron Giant left over to keep. :monster:

Also got more than 10 Tri-Face cards, so I'm going to be able to either junction 100 Pains to someome's status attack or have my first 10 Curse Spikes toward getting a Dark Matter and teaching Quistis Shockwave Pulsar. Haven't decided yet which I'm doing.

Anyway, I love Triple Triad. The best minigame FF has ever had, for both its fun factor and usefulness in the game proper.

Did you take the transfer student on the tour as she requested?

Of course.

What time limit did you pick for the Fire Cavern? Were you successful with your first choice?

10 minutes. More than enough time. Had almost four left on the clock when Ifrit went down.

Did you have any trouble beating the other time during the field exam?

Nope. Got back to the transport with more than 20 minutes to go.

How many times did you fight X-ATM092? Did you try to destroy it? Were you successful?

Twice, yep and yes.

Did you get the GF Siren?

Of course.

What do you think of the controls/exploration compared to other FF titles?

As good as most, really. After fixing the controller settings so that Triangle accesses the menu anyway.

This was the first FF that allowed you to navigate with the Analog stick, so I love that. I do wish you could rotate the world map, though.

What about the battle system?

I love it. It's so easy and fun to abuse, especially in conjunction with modding cards and refining items. Draw can be a pain in the ass until you make sure everyone is working with a decent Magic stat, but if you've got that squared away, it's really not even an annoyance either. Instead, it becomes just another element of the system to abuse.

Always loved the gunblade R1 mechanic too. That was a clever way to make battles slightly more involved.

Are you enjoying the story? What do you think of it so far?

Oh, I love the story. Always have. Both that school days and military atmosphere. Really excellent and comfy combination of what would be an absolutely ghastly paradigm in real life.

Anything else of interest stand out to you?
I noticed for the first time that Cloud has a bandage around his head when he wakes up in the infirmary.

I also remembered just how much I love the sound effects in this game -- the "clop, clop, clop" when you walk/run, the menu sounds, etc. These are happy sounds. They really make me happy.

Oh, meant to add above that I already have multiple copies of every card available at this point in the game, as well as all the rare cards you can get up to this point.

Also, it's my headcanon that everyone in the Garden likes Squall and thinks he's friendlier than he really was at first because he beat all of them at cards. Of course, he only played with them because he appreciated how the game tests his strategic thinking, and he needed other people in order to play it. :awesome:
