Is the design just for halloween?

Yes. Wikia is holding a contest for wikis to redesign themselves for Halloween to win promotion on Wikia's hub pages or some such.

.... This isn't a permanent thing, right?

Because that orange and black scheme seems specifically designed to make me as angry as possible

No, it's only for Halloween, and we're still in the process of tweaking things - as I post this we've lightened the red font color to a yellow-orange to be easier to read. Sadly, a lot of people decided to wait until the design was launched to complain about it and bring up requests for improvements.

I'm just realising this now, but my previous post sounded incredibly rude so I apologise for that.

However, I still don't like it. I'm genuinely asking - is it going back to normal immediately after halloween? I understand the colour theme and stuff for halloween and I think it's a fun little thing to change it for occasions like this, but it's really tough on the eyes. Not just from a colour scheme/ design perspective, I mean it genuinely hurts my eyes to try and read what's on the page.

I'm all for doing a twist for the holidays. But chances are high you're making it very hard for some people to read your site. Sure there's the option of using custom CSS in the browser, then we're getting into the whole 'lol ur half blind, here's an ad hoc solution', kinda similar to 'you're in a wheel chair so use the back door, but wait 10 minutes so we have time to carry you in' kinda thing, which is what Universal Design is all about. There are other things one can do to create a Halloweeny look, like adding little pics here and there, borders, even poisoning the mouse cursor, or similar. Tweeking the CSS sheet like that is to me kinda 'ooo look I can change a color in CSS, I am totally h4xX0r', and I find the idea of changing the original design that drastic a bit unprofessional.

But that's my personal taste. And I am extremely conservative when it come to web site design. I'm all about function anyway :monster:

So, you asked, that's my opinion. It might be colored by the fact that I was just over at the Wiki to read an article and the design was annoying :P Other than that, the Wiki is really fantastic and I use it a lot. So, kudos anyway, the fact that you even bothered with something like this proves that you devote a lot of time to the site, which is the #1 recipe for a good site.

Apology accepted.

After, yes, immediately, unsure, it was for a Wikia design contest and they may ask us to leave it up a little longer. Also note that this will be a one-time thing, we aren't going to start redesigning the Wiki for Christmas and we probably will not be coming back to this next year aside from the usual logo change. It's been a pain to implement, in large part because people waited until it was live to come forward with complaints and concerns, and I'm not prepared to go through it again, and the person who did the CSS for it probably won't want to either since I had to talk him into doing it this time.
