Final Fantasy V

I don't recall the encounter rate bothering me, except in the Fire-Powered Ship, but I entered it a bit unprepared :P.

And I really think that's why V has a reputation for being "more" difficult, but I suppose it depends which version people have played too because the difficulty was lowered in some versions.

The bosses do all seem to have these super moves that just annihilate your team. If you've got a ninja and enough shurikens/ a good overall strategy, as long as you're fast enough up until this point it's not been too bad. None of them killed me for example, up until the 4 crystals (I still can't get over how hard they were).

But from comparing it to other FF's, yeah, it's definitely much harder. Even just by how much damage the enemies and bosses do from normal attacks. One hit generally knocks a quarter or a half of a characters HP right off (and like I said, I'm overlevelled for this point) but you still need a solid strategy for almost every boss. It's just very easy to die.

Anyway, I'll be playing more later (assuming my latest save hasn't been deleted again) and may even stream it, dunno yet. Will probably post here with more progress when I'm done ^_^.

This pretty much sums the difficulty level up. I found the battles more challenging than the other FF's I've played because I was constantly healing/resurrecting my party. I took SO much more damage playing this game than, say, VI. VII, I believe anyway, is regarded as a rather easy FF, and I think as I've gone into the "classic" (pre VII) titles, they've gotten harder and harder.

^Yes, I think V is the hardest of all of them. But to be fair I can't accurately judge 3, because I've only played the iOS version and while that's kinda cool, it's totally different from the original.

OK so, I did the worst thing in the world last night while playing. Made some excellent progress (I just have the final dungeon to do, wooo) and I have all the summons including Bahamut, Hydra (or Syldra in the retranslated version I'm playing), and Phoenix. Words cannot express how boring I found the Phoenix Tower.

I also mastered a lot of their jobs by grinding - but I cheated slightly. I moved the game off the PSP and started playing on my PC to make sure the loss of 6 hours incident never happens again, but in doing so discovered the fast forward button. Boy does it make me happy. Spent about an hour in fast forward mode running back and forward on the world map just levelling jobs by holding X, slowing down and healing when required. It really bulked up my time.

Of course I'm now left with the problem of wanting to master every job class, because I've mastered all of them seperately and more than half on each character. This has resulted in me with 3 monks using X-Fight from the hunter class (8 HITS PER CHARACTER!) and they're all around level 75, which is ridiculously high for this game. I've never been above level 50 any other time I played through it. So I think I might try to take on Shinryu.

EDIT: Got caught up in what I was writing and forgot to mention the "WORST THING IN THE WORLD" that happened because I'm a fucking idiot - I was levelling 2 ninjas and somehow accidentally managed to "Throw" the EXCALIBUR. Yes, the real, full on excalibur, not even the shitty one. The worst part is, I was holding X so I didn't notice until 3 hours later and I was like... where is my sword.

Gone. Save over the last file already, saved over the save states, everything. I've decided I don't care, after all it's only one sword ^_^.

^ Yeah, I did much the same thing with the powerleveling, only I did it for the ABP in certain areas so my levels remained really low. Throttle at 200%, lol. But what do you mean by holding down the X button? Did it just auto select your first action then for each character, such as attack and whatnot?

Just attack attack attack attack, then I held down X (or A I guess) and ran back and forward and kept an eye on each HP counter until it dropped below a certain level, then slowed it down to heal, then kept going. This also resulted in a shit load of gil, which I mostly used to buy Pinwheels (MagiShurikens in the English release).

Although it got fun when I started having them use X-Fight constantly as monks. One character was taking out a group of 3 in one turn. Rather fun to watch.

Sorry for the double post but thought I'd update - completed the game :(

I use sadface because now I have nothing to do and am going to have to resort to finding something else to do with my multitudes of spare time these days.

I beat Omega and Shinryu! Can't believe it. I was consulting a guide (GameFAQ's Alex, he's written a lot of FF/Square guides on there) and his exact wording in reference to Shinryu is (copypaste):

This is one of the only optional bosses in a Final Fantasy game that I've never beaten, given adequate prep time it can be done of course but he's still REALLY hard.

To be honest, I had more problems with Omega. I beat them both first time but Omega nearly killed me, Shinryu didn't even manage to cause damage (because I had 4 coral rings equipped, so tidal wave didn't do any damage). I used the normal job class and had 2 people with Time Magic and Throw, cast "Quick" on themselves and threw Pinwheels (magishurikens) on repeat. He was down in one turn. Maybe if I'd let it run a bit longer it would have been more challenging, but because of the way he makes it sound in that guide I was going to skip it altogether when it wasn't even remotely challenging. Confused about that one.

The ending made me sad too, it was a bit emotional considering there isn't much in terms of a beefed out plot all the way through. Quite surprised by how fleshed out it was, and the showing your character's stats one by one was really cool too. What I especially liked was the camera going through the field while the credits played, with the characters there - I thought that was really cool for the SNES era and I don't remember all of this from when I played it years ago. The original AC credits are actually strikingly similar.

So anyway yes, good game, I rather enjoyed it. On to another...
