Second attempt:

Barret still bring up Biggs et al, nice to see they mattered to him.

Random seaman doesn't care about all this infiltrators. Thanks bud.

Sephiroth really does nail his entrances, gotta give him that. Cutscene in remake, please?

JENOVA gave me trouble again, she's pretty fast and can spam lasers quickly. Got through it though.

"Bear wearing a marshmallow" What does that actually mean?

Aeris wants to know if I like tans. Hmm. I want to replay this to see if Tifa has a similar line, but not facing Jenny again.

The Shinra scene is interesting. Heidegger takes direct responsibility for his failings, doesn't try to shunt the blame at all, although he does take out frustration on random sailors. Rufus orders him to 'do something'. Helpful.

Wander round Costa, get tourist advice. Johnny's got hisself a house. Yuffie got a job. Red got kicked in the face.

The inexplicable Hojo harem. Hmm, he seems to actually regret Ifalna's death. And is wonderfully unfazed when

Aeris is understandandably upset. I'm hesitant to be too nice to her, even though I like her, because I'm hoping to get some other date than hers for the first time.

Innkeeper wants to know if I have a cute ladyfriend? Huh? Who's that supposed to be?

Anyway, chapter 2 done. Only nine behind everyone else.

Kicked Sephy's ass yesterday. :) Ahh, the shirtless final "battle". They damn well better keep that in the remake, or there are going to be a lot of pissed off fangirls.

I've spent so much time farming chocobos I haven't even gone into space yet... :-P

And as far as my current situation... well I've been playing Phantom Pain and that game has sucked me in like a black hole of awesome, so I haven't been playing FF7 OR my FF1 Challenge Run lately (and I'm just... so excited to get back to that...)

I vote for a shirtless mode for New Game+. All male characters go the entire game in various states of undress. Except Palmer... because seriously, no one wants to see that... ;)

Kionae, I like the way you think. ;)
What about like the Last Story? If you get a certain item, you could literally strip all your characters down to their underwear (which unfortunately was drab looking, but hey, still nice) for the rest of the story if you wanted to. :D I made a certain character shirtless during some moments of the game...............

Corel, Gongaga, and Cosmo Canyon

Mount Corel is pretty. And then it gets gradually more barren as you get to the top, and you see the reactor cut into the mountainside. Never noticed that platform to the left before.

A mushroom covered in teeth is a legit random encounter. Well, at least it's not zips.

Barret, why is your accuracy so horrible?

Aeris is really hitting on us hard, she's saying stuff like 'I'm glad you're here' a lot. I'm conflicted, because I like her and want her in the party, but but I don't want to get her date night.

Is that a lake under the railway or is it Mako?

The only rickety rope bridge so far that hasn't collapsed when I crossed it. Yay!

Barret's backstory is well done it's one of my favourites of them all.

Aw, poor tent train guy. Don't worry, the coal train will come back and completely wreck the town again later.

Sephiroth passed through Corel. He's not keeping a very low profile.

Hmm... giant golden statue of Dio... I'm sensing a theme here.

Gah..storyline stuff keeps taking all my money! First the Chocobo Ranch, the Fort Condor, now the GS cover charge. I have like 300 gil left, so I blow it in the Mog machine for 30 easy GP, and then fail at Speed Square. I also go on a romantic gondola trip in the hope that it affects the date mechanics.

Cait Sith introduces himself as a fortune telling robot. Hmm, I didn't realise they knew he was a machine. Funny thing... all his fortunes are correct,m although I'm not sure how 'lucky colour is blue' fits in.

Oh, a massacre? Hmm.

Dio actually almost listens to your plea of innocence before Cait runs. 'Gateway to Heaven' Nice touch.

So, how did Dyne get up to Battle Square to kill Shinra staff if he was already locked up down in Corel. Does he get annual leave to go on killing sprees?

I love Dyne, I think this is one of the most underplayed tragedies in the game. Real wrench to Barret too 'My hands ain't no cleaner." Deserves more focus. His pendant isn't equippable though.

Sephiroth was in the Gold Saucer too, but he must have been having too much fun gambling to go on another massacre. Asks Dio about the black materia for some reason. Has a 1 tattooed on his hand?

Buggy time. Switch Aeris into the party because Gongaga works best with both.

Fantastic foreshadowing here, on a first playthrough this could come off as Zack being an ex of Tifa's she doesn't want her love interest to know about.

Zack hasn't contacted his parents in ten years, not five. Wow, what happened between them, that's kinda dickish unless there's something we don't know about. Although they somehow knew he had a girlfriend.

And the reactor exploded three years ago. Zack must've got a shock when he came back and saw all the graves.

The Turks are sure chatting a lot for people lying in ambush. Reno's holding a grudge over being made a fool of in sector 7. Also, you only need to beat one before they bail out.

"Don't go easy on them even though they're girls." Does he say that if my team is different?

Got to wonder who in weapons dev came up with the tank triceratops model.

Forgotten how good the music is in Cosmo Canyon. Barret gets a lot to do here, he's planned to bring the gang to Cosmo Canyon. Like how the old gang hasn't been forgotten.

Lot of good dialogue here. Looking into the bonfire makes Tifa think of Nibelheim. Yikes. And she very nearly tells him what's up.

Bugenhagen can hear cries of Planet. Thought that was a Cetra thing.

Aeris learned a lot from the elders too.

Cait Sith mentions he's been here before. Interesting.

I like this dungeon, it and Nibelheim have a lot of sentimental value because I had a horrible time getting through it first playthrough. First time ever I fully explored it. Planned on taking Gi Nattak on properly for old times sake, but it killed my healer, and with one Phoenix Down left I used it on him instead.

This cave adds an interesting aspect to the returns to the planet ethos. Undead can and do exist in universe.

Bugen thinks stopping the reactors is pointless but worth trying. And we're on the road again. Next stop, new Nibelheim

Yep, me again.
Nibelheim, MK II

I gave in and put Aeris in my party. Tifa now has the insanely overpowered technique Frog Song, which should keep me going for a while.

Nibelheim remains unsettling even now. The fingernail scratchings, the reports on the wall are still there, I thought they only appeared in disc 3.

Child sized Sephiroth Clones. Holy fuck.

This must have been really unsettling for Tifa and Cloud, given all the clones in her old house. And for some reason the report to Hojo is on her desk.

Bad things continue to happen whenever Sephiroth shows up, he has a singular presence that few villains can match, even though he just threw materia at me, that does kinda drive home how inconsequential we are by comparison. He spends his screentime well.

On into the mountains. Rickety ropebridge that doesn't collapse number two.

I may not have been in the non flashback Nibel mountains in over ten years. I had a horrific time beating the Materia Keeper my first playthrough, to the point where I essentially fled and saved on the rocket town side, a save file I still have to this day. That boss is still super sentimental to me, so I stayed away from it for fear I'd never recapture that first epic struggle. I was concerned that it would lose its effect. I skipped Vincent so I wouldn't be overlevelled, and the end result was a legit compelling battle. I started okay, got complacent halfway through, and eventually ended up with Aeris fighting alone, with Materia Keeper almost down. Aeris wasn't a great physical attacker, and her offensive magic was limited to a summon I'd already used and fire, to which that boss is immune. It used Trine to wipe out everyone but her, and I was out of Phoenix Down, so it was looking grim...except that she had Enemy Skills equipped, and now could use something that could hurt it. I'm so glad this one tested me.

Materia Keeper is interesting, it's one of the few bosses that is completely random and unaffiliated, it's just in the way, and doesn't even engage until you do, busy sitting on its nest, or just inconveniently standing around. Being undersupplied, I didn't explore the rest of the mountains, might do that now. But not this time.

So, after a night's sleep in Rocket Town I went back into the Nibel Mts to have look around for old time's sake...and got slaughtered by a dragon due to my lack of Phoenix Downs. It was actually kinda heartwarming, dragons are worthy opponents that should be able to kill me. But I didn't tempt fate twice, and headed off to rocket town.

Weapon shop guy is more polite if you talk to him behind his counter... hmm.

The Inn sells Shanghai Tea? Oh, it's called the Shanghai Inn, nice save, game.

So I go on the traditional looting spree, stealing from the guy I need help from and a comedian down the line.

Aeris reaction to the plane is immediately 'Let's take it!' She's actually pretty snarky through this part of the game, I'd forgotten.

Cid refers to the war as 'meaningless'. Hmm.

Weren't they using Mako already when the rocket was launched?

Flashback time: 'Forget about her' Mission control is cold.

One thing I didn't like about BC was how they took Shera's achievement away from her, it made the launch about last minute sabotage rather than her diligence.

"We've been going in the wrong direction." Where were you looking, Rufus, Mideel? He's not exactly hard to track, he's deliberately leaving a trail for God's sake.

Is Shera being devious here? She knows we want the plane, is she trying to save it from Shinra while having plausible deniability? Headcanon'd!

Palmer is interesting here, his little spiel talking to himself is completely different to his normal persona. Is he playing up slapstick the rest of the time? Seems to think he can fly the plane too.

Forget the WEAPONs or the shirtless scenes, I wanna see this bossfight in HD.

When I had the plane, I decided to go back to Nibelheim and get Vince. You actually get some pretty good gear in this quest, the Cosmo Memory and the Odin Materia are pretty good loot for this point in the game.

Aeris continues to be pretty funny, 'If you sleep here, of course you get bad dreams' 'this (in response to Vincent explaining his Sin) is kinda weird'

'This mansion is the beginning of your nightmare.' Hmm, that sounds a lot like a prelude to a fight, was he just about to attack the party until Cloud agreed with him.

Vincent knows what SOLDIER is? They weren't around in his day, right?

Assistant to Gast, for this, I prefer Dirge's version.

Vince 'respected' Lucy, huh?

Okay, so with that done, I stayed a night at the Inn and went back into the Nibel Mts. Did some exploring, thought I had the perfect strategy to deal with the Dragons because they can be put to Sleep by Frog Song, until a Dragon oneshotted Tifa, who was carrying that materia. So I got TPKd again. It was less funny this time, as I had last saved before Rocket Town, but honestly, still pretty funny. I'll spare you the second attempt, probably, whevnever I get around to it.

Sorry folks, I know this part of the game pretty well, so it was hard to motivate myself to continue.

Anyway,

The Bronco went quite a long way, actually, it was nearly in Wutai by the end.

Didn't bother with the Wutai quest, just went to talk to the one guy that doesn't freely let you loot his house.

Since I had money this time, I spent some time playing Gravity Bike. A thought...maybe in the remake the slot machines should have PS1 graphics?
Eventually went to look at the damn keystone, kitted Cloud out as well as I could for Battle Square, but my HP was halved twice and I was killed by some bats in the last round. So we go to leave, and get turned back.

How does Cloud know what the black materia is, has it been mentioned before?

Dio again identifies a man not wearing a black cape as a man in a black cape.

For the first time in over a decade of this game, I got the Tifa date. Da da da da da da dadada! I did the play right for her sake, and Tifa's reaction afterwards is 'that was funny'. Consider me crushed.

"Being old friends is hard. Timing is everything."

"Aeris would just come right out and say it, I bet." Aww...

On the whole, I think the Aeris date is better written and more plot relevant.

Hi Reeve! I still like the guy, he does a lot of work under serious pressure. He even gives them the Location of the Temple, that's nice.

Until next time, folks!

Yup, I'm still doing this. Next up, Wutai subquest. Missed it my first playthrough, was never as fond of it as most people seem to be.

Aeris is suspicious first. Interesting to see Attack Squads, they're a much later encounter, with their teeth pulled for this one.

"That's not them, those are the guys from before!" The soldier knows them, then.

I've forgotten the land route to Wutai, briefly got lost, but made it. Music's nice.

Hi, Turks. Wow, they're really dickish to everyone through this whole mission, starting with taking their vacation in the nation Shinra destroyed.
"You talk too much."

Reno and Rude do love each other, though. Can see why people ship em.

Forgot some of Yuffie's hiding places, eventually found her near Godo. What sound does GOOGAH represent?

He asks us to leave, cue family drama.

Cloud punches the pot for Y's escape. Direct.

My soft spot for Elena was helped by her agreeing to help here.

Turk to soldiers: 'Looking at you is making me sober.' Such gentlemen.

"Don't care about Wutai or your feelings" Damn straight.

This must be a finicky quest to do first time, ringing the bell isn't very intuitive.

Shinra theme setup-then we find Corneo. Nice trick, game.

And Reno is needlessly cryptic about where to go for no reason.

Nice call back from Tifa. "That fall down that trap really hurt. I'm using the same team that met Corneo before, nice touch.

You've got to hand it to Corneo, he's slippery. Almost got away with the Turks, us, and the Shinra army on his tail. He switches personality when his back's to the wall "you guys are serious...good, good. Ain't no time for me to be fooling around neither." Could have taken Rapps with Barret, but I wanted to keep my dream team together, so exploited Seal Evil.

Corneo's tough, too, keeping his grip even with...a think a knife through his hand, right?

"Because it's our job." Reno, didn't you explicitly explain to the soldier earlier that this wasn't in fact your job, at least not today.

"Don't act so weak." Good god, dude, she's hanging upside down on a sheer cliff, show some tact!

So, possible debate, was Reno actually off duty or did he just not want to face 3 to 1 odds with his back to a sheer cliff and Rude mostly too far away to help? Thoughts, people?

While I was in Wutai, I figured I'd climb the pagoda. They're actually pretty long endurance battles, they all have a trick of some kind. Gorky's barriers.

Yuffie doesn't know Shake. I like how all these battles have the bosses goading her character flaws and moving into respect. And her form is some kind of spiky bird thing. Chekvhev's giant leech form starts easy and gets tougher as time passes.

"I got insurance." Heheh.

"Undefeated" Staniv is the easiest encounter so far.

Godo...is tough, it takes me several tries. He seems to have a decent combat stance. I have nothing that can outpace his healing factor so it's a long grueling slog until he runs out of MP. Trine does more damage than my current HP count, and I have no Lightning absorbing accessories, so I use elemental and thunder linked materia in my armor, carry transform solely to counter his minis, and wear a fairy ring to counter poison. My only heavy hitting attack is Greased Lightning, Clear Tranquil is basically worthless at this point in the game. Staying in the back row with Long Range equipped, I also have Counter and Restore, of course.

This is quite complicated tactics by my standards, but I have no breathing room this whole fight as several of his attacks can take up to 3/4 my MP. Critical hits with Beast Sword at the exact wrong moment makes me lose twice, but eventually I claim victory, using about four Ethers in the process.

Good reward, though 40k gil, Leviathan, and All Creation. Is there different dialogue if you succeed first time?

Touching, though, I like a genuinely positive parent child relationship in fiction, it almost never happens.

Strength without determination-is there a better translation of this?

Why is Shake talking about an underground pipe?

Thought I could get through the fire after this quest, apparently not. Ah well.

So, that's Wutai, any more good quest around now or should I just head to the temple next?

TLS' slowest ever playthrough continues! There's a possibility I will have to put this on hold for a year if I don't get it done soon.

So I wandered around to random places for a while, checked in at Fort Condor and Junon, underwater reactor elevator lady is afraid of my even at this point in the game.

A random man in Bone Village knows where the temple is and how to get in. Nice of him.

The temple is a living soul, staying out of TLS by strength of will. 'Uneasy, but happy.

Tattoo number nine dying outside.

Tseng: Letting Aeris go... was the start of my bad luck.

Aeris: Nope!

"I am... still alive." Thanks for that. Helpful for sequels.

The remake could really make the maze look great, keep it complicated and difficult. Battles are fun, I keep bouncing back and forth to Frog status.

Sealed door sound brings back memories...why?

'Lucky' plus materia, eh?

Pool of knowledge is a living soul.

More classic Turk professionalism. I love that little aside glance Sephy gives to us before he comes in. So the teleporting is actually navigating the lifestream?

Cloud: "It's going to end here."

Tifa: "We're here too." You tell em.

What's that thing in the middle of the clock.

Nailbat such an Ancient Weapon that it has its own shrine. Tough battle, fortunately Frog Song is super overpowered.

As demonstrated by me having to slowly poking a Jemnezmy to death in frog.

Tough battle with 8eye. Fortunately, frog song is super overpowered. Never knew Bio was an instant kill for them

Aeris: "Someday we'll look back on these hard times and laugh" Aww...

Remembered sequence to catch Ancient. Yay!

Found Work Glove, but Materia slots more valuable. Also, Tiger Fang looks and sounds cooler.

Mural room.

When you know what he's talking about, this isn't actually all that impressive a scene, it's a fairly standard 'explain the plan'. He has a better reason for doing it than most, but Sephy has most impact when he's doing things, his monologue here is most effective if you don't actually understand it.

"So cold. I am always by your side." is a nice opener, though, as is casually stabbing into the stone floor. Does he ever glow again after this scene, what does it mean?

"Wake up!" seems to be Cloud's trigger phrase. He goes through a posing sequence, successfully fights off attack, and has no memory of any of it. nd the others agree not to tell him.

Where did that Dragon come from, anyway? Is it some kind of guardian spirit, or is it just living there and wants them to shut up.

I love Bahamut, nice to see the first Summon with real punch. We also gain a Dragon Armlet, did we skin it after we won?

Puzzles.

Tifa: "Let's just leave it here." Good call.

Cloud: "Lots of different flunkies". Never got this line, what flunkies? The other clones don't seem capable of pulling this off.

Cait has them bugged, since he overhears, but they seem oddly unbothered by this. What happens if he's with you?

Bosses are really growing teeth now, I died a couple of times in the Temple.

Compatibility test right in front of Tifa. Yowch.

Aeris, you just agreed to a date with a robot.

What's with everyone saying "Be strong!" all the time?

Tifa waits up top for some reason.

"Wake up!" again.

Sephy shows up again. Keeps it short and sweet this time, while Tifa runs around in a panic. She's nice enough to knock out Cloud, though.

Aeris is pretty good natured about the attempt to beat her to death.

Sephy impresses again by taking her threat seriously.

C worries about losing control, Barret tells him he'll beat him up if he tries.
"Ain't no gettin offa this train we're on."

"I'm afraid to find out the truth." Hmm.

"You sure do have good friends" Thanks bud.

Aeris left her materia, but took the Dragon Armlet with her. Either we've lost it or we loot her body later. Sad to see her go, I'd forgotten how much fun Aeris was in the party. Also, I'd never noticed before that her skirt was split for running at the hem.

Leave town and Save.

I admire your persistence!

Sad part is, I'm not even that busy. I just slowed up because I was at part of the game I already knew inside out, so lots of it was a slog of circle tapping. Then Metal Gear V happened.

Good news is, I'm now into territory I have only played a couple of times. I'm looking forward to playing again.

Latest update.

Back to Fort Condor first, because I had money to burn. Sorry Aeris.

Nothing much happened finding the Lunar Harp.

City of Ancients music completely forgotten, It's really nice.

Thwarted by a invincible floating fish, I explore and loot.

Little bubbles of Ancient Spirits like in the temple. Imagine if Aeris was still in the party for this bit.

Another Enemy Skill Materia behind the bed. Thanks, but two is enough.

The Ancients built a lot for people that weren't supposed to settle in one spot. Pretty modern looking furniture, either it was inhabited relatively recently or they were ahead of their time.

I thought there were random encounters here. Apparently not.

The menu calls it the forgotten capital, the characters call it the City of the Ancients, and random Bone Village man calls it the forgotten city.

So we go to bed, and Cloud feels the presence of Aeris and Sephy
Tifa: How can you tell?
Barret: Get up off our asses!

Cloud now ignores the Ancient bubbles.

Wait, I can actually go back to the world map? Decided not to go dig for treasure after a moment's thought.

Is this the 'Five Years Ago' music I'm hearing?

Now the fish is gone.

Interesting question...Did Aeris drop the barrier, or Sephiroth? Was she or was she not safe if I wasn't here?

Downstairs reminds me of Alexandria somehow. That and a Disney Castle.

This... is a really well done sequence. The music shifts, and then there's a slow build, he draws his sword, you can struggle as much as you like but it doesn't matter.

I hope they keep the controllableness and don't have a cutscene.

Imagine staring down the point of that sword. Aeris doesn't react at all, either she doesn't know we're here, trusts us, or continues praying in the face of it all.

Eee, that little smile just before she gets stabbed, then her theme starts up with the materia dings.

Sephiroth always shines better through his actions than his dialogue, but he keeps this short.

In the remake, I think we can cut Cloud's little monologue. Keep 'Shut up', but we now have the graphics to show 'my eyes are burning' etc without having to narrate it.

This boss battle is very well thought out. Jen hits very hard but can't hurt you thanks to the water ring. I remember my first meeting, Tifa happened to have it equipped by coincidence, as I slowly beat her to death with her hands.

It's a really great design choice, as we get a sense of how powerful she is, while not being frustrated and ruining the moment. Gives you the chance to take out your frustration on her threat free while still feeling as though you got lucky, especially as she runs out of MP fast, and can't hurt you if you revive them after that. And they lose the victory theme because it's out of place.

Or maybe I'm projecting. Anyway

"Because you are... a puppet." That is how you end a disk, people.

Oh, now we bury her. Nice little non vocal polygon emotions here, Barret hand on shoulder, Tifa either closing her eyes or stroking her face and then running away.

Seems awfully deep for the way Cloud is standing, but anyway.

The little talk before the end of the disc is nice, Cloud is learning from what happened before. He knows he could fail again, so he's relying on his friends to keep him in check. This is nice, he's not blind to the danger here, it's a good bonding moment that shows how much trust he has in his friends.

Start of disc 2. Cloud has a vision but remembers it only as dialogue

A monster is a squirrel in a molehill? Okay...

And here is an Acrophies. A big crab-worm snail thing that heals itself with tidal waves. Fortunately, Frog Song is Super Overpowered.

Footprints in the snow are a nice touch.

Geography is nice, it looks like their used to a land bridge from one of the peninsulas while I'm travelling.

Bandersnatch look cooler in FF9. I save outside Icicle, will probably keep playing. Went into the town for three seconds and I already love the place. Haven't been here often.

See you soon.

Speeding up because I'm having fun.

Icicle, Glacier, and Whirlwind Maze

Oh, God, that music... I wander around Icicle, stop at Holzoff's House, because he never bothered to return after twenty years. Spend a night at the Inn (why does the bar have its own music?)

"What's with you? You make me sick!" Who says this and why? Ifalna gets namedropped in the bar. Can't break into the Rest Room here like in most places.

Gast's House is called Gast's House in the menu. Spoilers.

Ooh, tapes.

The Crater area used to be called Knowlespole. Apparently, the Cetra have no special power to heal the Planet...so, were they killing themselves?

Refers to a 'he' that approached as a friend before infecting them with a virus. So, either JENOVA is intelligent, or there was a Cetra equivalent of Sephiroth.

The Planet can never fully heal while Jenova exists. Hmm. The Planet is watching the situation closely.

10 days after the birth, Gast still doesn't know whether Aeris is a boy or a girl? Did Ifalna lay an egg?

"I will protect you" I wonder if Hojo was waiting outside for something like this, so he he could ruin the moment.

Gast was hard to find, but does Hojo imply he found them sooner and was waiting for Aeris to be born so she's have an extra specimen?

"I'll take care of this!" (shot) Oh well, good thought.

Back outside, Elena shows up. I always let her hit me because I like her and it makes no difference. Did nobody even tell her Tseng was alive? Classic Turk professionalism rises again.

Random Shinra guard is nice, doesn't want to fight because there's kids around, and gives me info to keep the peace. Thanks.

"Don't be angry, I'm just doing my job."

So I go snowboarding, and crash into a number of Masochist moogles , snowmen, pine trees and rocks. But I get there, and accidentally find my way back out of the glacier instantly. Wander around until I collapse, because I've never been good at navigating the place, getting attacked by floating lizards and Marlboro, who still pack a punch although less than usual. Also stumble across somebody in a cave that tells me to leave them alone.

Remake could really make the glacier something special. Like being lost in the desert in Uncharted 3, have them camp out to weather a snowstorm and have character moments. Something similar can be used for the cliff. And winter outfits please, Tifa barely has a shirt, there's a big cutout at the back under her hair. Although she does have good spirit.

Died again to Schizo, essentially on purpose. Equip properly for the next run and still lose 2 of 3. In another playthrough I beat the boss and then went back to the hotspring but got KOd by a Blue Dragon before I got to save. Random encounters starting to get harder, Stilva are dangerous.

This is actually a pretty long stretch of the game, it would be tough for first timers. Easy to get lost cutting down the icicles, and your last shopping trip was in the not very well stocked Icicle, you have to go through the Glacier, the Cliff, and the Cave before you get to the next one, it would be easy to tear through your items.

Crater. Another place remake could shine, make the Whirlwind maze confusing, drive home how dangerous it is.

Nice little segment on the Highwind.

Scarlet stops laughing when no one joins in. Hojo openly laughing at his boss.

Capes dying.

We meet a dragon rider, is there a civilisation in the Cave?

Enter Sephiroth. Again, doing things instead of monologueing, casually cutting down capes, two lines of dialogue, messes with Cloud's head and straight for the attack.

I'm equipped against fire, Nyah nyah nyah nyah nyah.

I still think Sephy might have been legitimately trying to kill us all here.

Tifa sensibly asks him to leave the materia behind. It makes sense that Red and Barret are the choices, they've been with the gang the longest. Vincent even suggests holding on to it.

Cid: "Let me catch some shuteye." Really? Now?

It's a setup for a big bossfight, but there actually isnt one here. Interesting choice.

"Sephiroth is near. Anything could happen."

Is there any actual reason to believe this?

"Are you high on Mako or something?" He can see it, right? Barret's practical, though "How are we going to get our of here?"

Cloud's initial response. "I wasn't paying attention."

"It's your (Tifa's) attitude that counts" Well, about that...

Her outfit in the photo is better than CC'S version.

The devs did a great job of making sure everything in Nibelheim was important. Even the photo guy.

"Didn't have to worry about it, because I was..." How does this sentence end?

Execs are pretty brave, I'll give them that.

"There's no such thing as the promised Land"
"Second Rate Scientist"

No, Rufus, he's actually right.

Hojo is interesting. He doesn't believe in things until they're proved, but as soon as he sees the proof he grasps the implications quicker than anyone else. We see this again in Dirge, he has faults, but he is very quick on the uptake.

Really, Red, no suspicions at all. Like how OOC Illusion Tifa is even in this brief segment.

Scarlet has good instincts. And Rufus stands by her 'bad feeling'

"Come on. The Black Materia" Sephiroth's real body's one line.

"Whatever I say now is too little, too late." Maybe so, but Cloud hasn't given up the materia yet, you could still shoot him, right?

Another scene to be reworked is the stumbling around on the Highwind.

Flashback to dog and guard. Is this precedent for the wolf in AC?

Grabs head.

And we wake up in Junon. Hey, that's the Turks music with no Turks.

"People are ignorant. They'll feel better as long as someone is punished."

Heidegger seems to be acting as Rufus' bodyguard here. Still, you'd think Barret and Tifa would put up a fight here, their execution has just been announced and neither can really be disarmed. Anyway, I go as far as the savepoint and save. Might replay this segment, lots of fun things happen in it.

Weird. I couldn't do that. Anyway, onward.

I've played the Junon escape to death, but I still enjoy it anyway. Don't think it needs to be changed much.

Why is there a big poster with 'cannon' written on it on the wall?'

Camera likely not transmitting sound, or else Scarlet doesn't care what she's saying to the public on live TV.

"Stuck up £|%U!" Is there any reason she thinks that? I mean, they've never even interacted before IIRC?

Bystanders run through Barret to escape. Combat! I run away on account of my preserve human lives policy, and Barret's arms are untied after the combat.

I think what we can take from this is Scarlet doesn't know about Cait Sith, otherwise Reeve would have to answer some hard questions. This sequence really shows Barret's hidden qualities, Scarlet is directly responsible for destroying Corel, she personally shot him, but he doesn't even think about that because Tifa's in trouble.

Cut to upstairs, and the best evidence in canon to indicate that Heidegger is not stupid or incompetent, he handles a high pressure situation pretty well.

"Uh oh. Did I take a wrong turn?" One thing I'd like to see in the remake is a better sense of what Reeve's plan was here, like an explanation that he paid off the guard to drop the key so going to the airport was actually part of a plan instead of leaving Tifa for dead.

So, was Tifa's escape still televised? The soldiers don't catch you if you stand still, they wave at you to get out of the way so they can land.

I like that little roll on the landing, that's how you're supposed to take a fall.

What will the remake do for the slap fight, I wonder.

Couldn't they have hovered lower so Tifa could jump onto the deck?

Talked to crew member, I always thought that they stole the Highwind close to the execution date, but apparently they hijacked the airship when it landed in Junon, with all the executives on board and all their guards, and it worked! So the only captives Shinra ever had were Tifa, because she was unconscious, and Barret who probably wouldn't leave her. That's impressive from AVALANCHE.

Vincent : So glad you're alright.

Cait: Very calm at Shinra.

What actually caused that giant crater outside Junon? Do we know?

Stop in on cave guy, he hands over mythril. Presume that goes to smith gy near Gongaga, and receive the Great Gospel, too late for it to be any use. I basically travel the world to see if anyone has different dialogue. A lot of NPCs suddenly want to move to Mideel, but apart from Bugenhagen the only real thing that happens is I can't get into the Beginners Hall in Junon. I go to Midgar, but excavigation tour guy is missing.

Chocobo Sage, is it just me, or does he look like a giant floating disembodied head?

Difference of opinion between two people in Junon as to whether there are two more or four more Weapons.

Talk about a green officer uniform in the barracks. We only ever see one in the Weapon attacks Junon cutscene, officers in game are typically red.

A seamen also tells me he hasn't had a girlfriend in 18 years... Okay...

Fort Condor is bankrupt, and I have money to burn, so I help out.

Finally go to Mideel, where most people are super relaxed, except one guy who is completely panicked.

Aw, the dog follows me around!

Something feels off about Tifa's dialogue here. It would sound odd spoken.

Palmer is a silent presence in executive meeting. Everyone in my A team is missing, so I bring Cid, Barret, and Yuffie to Corel.

My 'spare human lives' policy is going to take a dent over the next few missions. Consider going to reactor from the Costa side, but then I'd have to go back for the airship.

I've never actually pulled off saving the town before. It takes three attempts, precognition of their weaknesses, and feeling kinda bad about killing the driver, but I manage it this time, barely. I wasn't sure you could actually succeed. And the reward is that Ultima materia that normally costs 100k. Pretty nice. Barret gets some recognition, yay!

Save outside Corel.

Fort Condor and the Lifestream.

Not much to report. Three Tristoners in the centre with two shooters as backup was basically impregnable, nothing could get close, the flanks were trickier, but got away without too many losses due to cycling people back to my repairer at the top. The Commander did eventually breach my defensive line, but it took a lot out of it, and it was quickly taken out afterward.

Then Cid randomly mentions Junon reactor even though nobody else has mentioned it yet.

"Cloud did a great job"

Vincent is oddly snarky with Cid. "You look really tired. Ready to give up being the leader?"

The 'love and charity' shop in Mideel is full of weapons. All made out of crystal for some reason.

I'd like if the nurse gave us the option to rest rather than compulsory.

Lifestreamquake. Cloud can sense Weapon, my grand strategy is to remove my nonessential materia and take the hit. I am triumphant with 2/3 dead and Barret on 200 HP. All characters start acting disappointed at Weapon being cowardly

The Lifestream happens in a weird semi cutscene, with field models but cutscene backgrounds. Tifa is standing on a record player or something

"I'd never do anything like that" And... gunfire? What's going on?

Not much to say about this, you all know how it goes. Lots of nice touches, like Old Tifa has the same mannerisms as Young Tifa.

They fell off that same damned rope bridge! Needs a toll for repairs or something.

Another 7 Day Coma, Tifa seems a bit prone to them.

Back to Highwind, bond over motion sickness with Yuffie. Head back to Mideel, like how the NPCs all have their little stories, the lady upset that her husband was in business in such a sleepy town is now upset that he's missing. Apparently the doctor wasn't told this, as 'no one was seriously hurt'. The guy panic buying due to Meteor now has the supplies of every other shop.

Relevant to recent debates on TLS:

Cloud's 'regression': He's not actually worried at all about 'failure to protect' anyone in this game, he briefly has very well founded fears that Sephiroth can control him, and here it's about whether he ever existed as more than Sephiroth's puppet. There's no 'it's all my fault' angsting, except as far as 'so now I have to fix it.' So his issues in AC are entirely new.

SOLDIER process: Every SOLDIER is injected with JENOVA cells, but they all have the will and sense of identity to not succumb to her influence. The Clones undergo the same process but are more susceptible to her will. Which means Weiss either somehow rejected JENOVA cells entirely, or was enhanced solely by Mako.

Next, a killing spree in Junon
