People said it came out of nowhere? How could it come out of nowhere? The picture of them together is the logo on the box. The first time they meet she magically turns Squall into a great ballroom dancer over the course of one song.

The orphange gripe I get

You'd better, that's the single worst plot twist...ever. Or at least that I've encountered. I was really into the story up until around that point. But I remember at that part thinking, "Oh come on!" and I was still pretty young!
I pushed through it, then the game started twisting the knife by making Edea the woman that raised all of them, but I still forced through it.
By the time i sat through Odine and the trip to space I said "Screw this crap" and quit until much much later when I decided I should play through the whole game.

And I still didn't like it. :monster:

The whole transition from "..." and "Talk to the hand, bitch" to "OH GOD I LOVE YOU PLEASE I'M SORRY RINOA. I'M SORRY" over her comatose body. Sure, it can and is explained within itself, but a lot of people can't help but think it's corny, because in real life, a lot of girls would have been like "Bitch please" at that point. It's not really a personal criticism of mine, as that never bothered me too much, but I can see how it can be a bit corny.

I dunno, I'm sort of lukewarm on FFVIII. It's not a bad game, but I was expecting to enjoy it a lot more than I actually ended up doing. I was expecting it to be a cultural, political drama, clashes between nations and ideals in a European-like setting (the setting is gorgeous, with locations like Dollet and Timber), while a bunch of teenage fighters try to deal with it. It didn't really end up that way for me, and instead I interpreted the story as being about a mopey kid and witches or whatever.

Laguna was cool, though.

And whenever anyway uses the line "I have a life", it just makes me roll my eyes and wanna puke.

Same here.

I've read this site's review for FF9, they gave it 3/5 and didn't like Zidane or Steiner, and made a big deal about Garnet's ass being the successor to Tifa's boobs. And now they bash Quistis for no personality and declare Zell the most likable of the party members. Hmmmm.....well, at least they got it right declaring Seifer and Edea right proper antagonists, though saying Seifer is equatable to Kefka in terms of insanity is a bit much. No one in the series comes close to the K-man. And Edea was cool, but one of the best villains in the series? Nah.

Some of this was funny, like the day schedule, but overall a rant. Some good points and jokes, some lame points and jokes, more of the latter than the former. And then this:

In six words: "YOUR FRIENDS LOVE YOU, SQUALL!" "Whatever."
I'm working that into my fanfic, Squall's very first spoken line is gonna be "whatever". :monster:

I dunno. Sephiroth lost his shit cause "BAWWW I'M A GENETICALLY ENGINEERED SUPERMAN WITH NO EQUAL".

To me that's a lot less justifiable that Kefka's madness.

Well to be fair, there was that whole thing with Genesis as well.

Still, nobody is as nuts as Kefka. Even the Joker shits himself when he hears Kefka's in town

I think it's less of an issue with the legitimacy of their madness, but more of the madness itself and how far it reaches. For example, Luca Blight had a pretty justifiable reason for being insane, yet he's still considered one of the most insane RPG villains ever.

This. Sephiroth went mad from a bad book or two, Kefka's mind was physically altered and it eventually cracked. But don't dare suggest Sephiroth is more insane than Kefka.

If I want to say jesus went tap dancing on route 66 I can. Whether or not it's a legitimate claim or not is irrelevant darlin.

I wouldn't mind some sugar sweetheart, but ok.

You know, I know I'm going hypocritically off topic, but I'm watching Everybody Hates Chris, and Julius just went in a dramatic voice "I'm Batman."

*giggle*

Anyway, I really liked the level of detail on the background of the world setting, especially compared to FFVII's world. However, I would have liked more information and exposition on Centra.

FF8 would have benefited heavily from more lore and backstory for the world. I can say that about a lot of FF games though.

o. this thread got responses. lol.

On the review: I outright disagree with the reviews I've actually read of his (VIII, IX and X really) but this one brought some decent lulz.

On FFVIII, I have really mixed feelings over it. My cynical more "Squall-like" personality thinks the love story is totally ghey, and can't get over its glaring faults... mainly the insanely stupid orphanage plot twist. Then there's another part of me that's really a giant sap, and then I start to enjoy it in a guilty pleasure sort of way. The characters all have interesting premises, but the story never really does them justice. I can genuinely say I like the characters, but for the most part it has nothing to do with canon representation. Also, cards. I pop in FF8 once in a while just to play that damn card game :(

I think I was one of the few people who didn't really like the Laguna sections all that much either. I found them kind of boring and wanted to get back to the main plot.

I sometimes wonder what would have happened if VIII had been released as the 7th FF and first on the playstation. I think VIII got a rough break in terms of having to follow the golden child of the series, so to speak. While people love to rag on the high school drama club nature of the cast and the kooky time compression stuff, the game took a lot of risks that JRPGs often don't. Then again, it continued the twinky FF bishie hero trend which hopefully will finally be broken by Snow.

It probably is judged more harshly due to following VII. But if they were switched, I think its safe to say I would have gotten into the series one game later than I did.

VII ain't to blame for the bishie shit. Amano is. He was doing that shit way back when. Graphics tech just caught up to his art.

Your damn right. It's amazing how many people blame 7 for it. Although you could say 7 was the first game where you could openly see the bishiness thanks to the cg and battle scenes.

I change opinions on ff8 at the drop of the hat. Sometimes I hate it sometimes I like it. As a whole I'd say it's a meh game. The characters I felt had potential .... but the story just was so out there they all got screwed in terms of development. I felt that aside from graphics it was a pretty big step down for the series.

There's almost no treasure chests to open so your not rewarded for exploring and I felt the level design in 8 sucked. The amount of copy and paste done in some of the area's is appalling especially in stuff like the prison where you have to run around the same giant circle like 15 times in a row.

The worst dungeons in the game:
The Brothers Tomb
The Galbadian Sewers
Desert Prison
Galbadia Garden (not as bad as the priors but still)

Even the dungeon's that didn't get listed above still aren't good by ff standards.

When they removed the weapon/armor system for this game they removed a good chunk of the games loot to collect. Instead they made it so you had to steal the loot and get it off enemies. Which isn't the same since rather than running through a new level to beat a boss and collect a powerful item at the end instead I now run back and forth in the same room until the desired enemy appears and gives me the desired item I want. This is why I don't like ff10 that much either to be honest.

First he says:

there is Possessed Edea, whom the player meets first and is actually Ultimecia speaking and acting through Edea's body. So when we're discussing the pitiless, megalomaniacal Edea who seduces Seifer, murders Deling, and punches a giant icicle through Squall's chest, we are really discussing Ultimecia.

And then he says(about Ultimecia):

She's Zemus with a sex change and a speech impediment.

Contradicting yourself much?

And when he says that Seifer is "one of the most compelling villains Final Fantasy has ever seen"... God, I laughed so hard!
FF's version of Draco Malfoy is one of the greatest FF villains ever?! LOL

About the rest of the article, Rubicon already said everything:

Articles like this always get on my nerves. It's just bitching, plain and simple. I cracked up at a few of the jokes, but all it really was was some douche whining. And whenever anyway uses the line "I have a life", it just makes me roll my eyes and wanna puke.

No beyotch you don't have a friggin life. If you "had a life" you wouldn't be writing a 10,000 word article on why VIII was such a disappointment. Coz I'm pretty freaking sure that doing that takes a lot more time than beating VIII's optional bosses.

I personally loved VIII. Loved the characters, just love it. Warts and all. I'm not blind to its flaws but I had a lot of fun and still have lots of fond memories of it.

FFVIII is not a bad game. I'll leave it at that :awesome:.

It's also got sci-fi stuffs in it that weren't as over-the-top or non-Western as later sci-fi FF games were (X, XIII), which appeals more to me.

And it's still got the best designed airship in the history of the series.
