Summary:
  • Akihiko Matsui steps down as producer.
  • Yoji Fujito steps in as replacement.
  • Dev team is being scaled down so the devs can move to other departments and skill up and not stifle their careers.
  • They will potentially work on FFXI again later.
  • Strong focus on "long-term stability of operations" including server upgrades to enable the game to run if not indefinitely, a very long time.
Just to be clear, the game is not shutting down, but it does seem this is the true maintenance mode people expected the last time the game was scaled back in 2015.
