[*]I really can't stand Fang's voice.

This reminds me, my dad saw me playing XIII once and after hearing Lightning speak, he made several comments about how terrible her voice was. I was a bit annoyed. :monster:

I like all their voices just fine, personally. :awesome:

Wut

Lightning's voice may be the one redeeming quality of her entire character. For me anyhow. Thank god for Ali Hillis.

Some other observations in your bullets have me biting my tongue to avoid saying spoilery things, as I'm not all that familiar with how much you know about the story...
I don't really know anything more than what has been presented to me in-game over the last four days. I couldn't even tell you the name of the final boss right now.

It's pretty remarkable how spoiler-free I've managed to stay for six years. I'm sure I've seen lots of spoilers but I'm really good at forgetting things, especially when they have no context. :monster:

I like Lightning's voice, and Sazh's, though I can't help but feel he's a bit of a "goofy black guy" trope at times.

I'm fine with Light's Eng VA in this game. In the sequels, I vastly prefer her JP VA.

I actually think that most of the voices in XIII are good. The characters the VAs have to portray is a different story. Do I find Vanille's voice annoying as hell? Yes, but I think that it's largely due to her character, not because of the actual voice, if that makes sense.

Sazh's, though I can't help but feel he's a bit of a "goofy black guy" trope at times.

You should see the Japanese version. The English version did such a fantastic job of minimizing that that he pretty much isn't at all by comparison. He's one of the more believable characters in the series, when all is said and done, imo.

I think I'm weird, even when Vanille and Snow really annoy me, XIII has one of my favorite casts and I love their voice actors, with the exception of Vanille.

I'm fond of Ali Hillis's Lightning although she does get progressively worse as the trilogy goes on, but I have a feeling that's the scripts fault. I think, in general, Jack Fletcher is an amazing voice director and I hope he worked in FFXV.

Fang's voice though, is amazing. I love her va probably better than every other cast in this game.
  • Remember what I was saying about how many save points there are in this game?
Huh I never really thought about it. I guess it makes sense, in a weird way with the way gaming trends have changed. Really, who wants to wait twenty minutes to find a save point after some emergency comes up?

XIII-2 and LR sort of change this up to by getting rid of save points altogether and just letting you save wherever.

I believe Tres made the comparison before, that FFXIII is Final Fantasy's Cowboy Bebop. That is, the first entry where there is a solid argument that the English cast is superior to the Japanese one.

Meh, as someone who has experienced the trilogy, I never had a beef with Lightning's VA, much less Fang or Vanille.

To be honest Fang is kinda fun to be around in Lightning Returns, at least in that game you get some banter out of her.

And trust me, Vanille will be a vastly different individual once you play Lightning Returns.

If I had to sum up the trilogy:

FFXIII: Tube the RPG.
FFXIII-2: Chrono Trigger meets Kingdom Hearts *my favorite of the 3 games by the way*
LRFFXIII: Majora's Mask meets Dressing Simulator *but not bad*

Chapter six

  • "Oh look, the Skyfleet's heading to Palumpolum, what shall we do?" "Run in the opposite direction!" "Okay!" ... Really? That's all the explanation I get?
  • I don't mind the occasional vocal song in a Final Fantasy game but unless I'm mistaken, this is the first time one has been used as an area's background music. It takes a bit of getting used to. Unfortunately, I don't much like the song in question.
  • I already mentioned this before, but it deserves to be mentioned again: the camera in this game is bad. It feels so stiff, especially when I'm running. Sometimes I have to stop just to look around.
  • I beat every Scalebeast and Wyvern that I came across. It took approximately ages.
  • Apparently enemies can't see you if you're on a "jump circle" thingy. That can be used to get them to look away and initiative a pre-emptive strike.
  • Chocobo, if you're going to stop me from moving to the next area until we fetch Sazh, you might as well just give me a cut-scene. There's no point handing me control for all of fifteen seconds and then taking it away again.
  • I died a few times against Enki and Enlil. I think I had a decent strategy but I wasn't always quick enough to heal. I've been thinking about how enemies in this game, particularly bosses, have a lot of HP, because of the stagger system. It feels a bit one-dimensional and it makes the battles unnecessarily long, in my opinion. At least the music was interesting in this fight.

Yeah, in this game it's even more about staggers.

Chuck Spells (Build Stagger) > Chuck Ruin/Attack (Stabilize Stagger) > *Staggered* > Physical Attacks/Debuffs.

That's pretty much the formula.

It gets even worse once you use Imperil / Poison combinations on some enemies.

At least in Lightning Returns, certain counter-hits and criticals gave you a stagger or equivalent knockdown.

I've been busy, that's all. :P I'm probably most of the way through chapter seven so I should be able to finish it and get my next report up in the next few days.
