I always kinda figured that, what with the space program sucking so much and the only telescope of any significance seen in the Compilation being Bugenhagen's, knowledge of any other planets that might exist is probably limited outside of Cosmo Canyon and the Study of Planet Life. That being said, you don't really need names for the different planets, cause the only one people in general know anything about is Gaia

In the real world, people have been dividing names for other planets and have been exploring and researching space for thousands of years. I really don't think the people on FFVII's world suddenly went 'whoops we have electricity now might as well start checkin' out those dots in the sky' decades ago. In fiction and in the real world, exploring astral bodies is something that far, far, precludes actual space exploration.

^This is true. And with the name Gaia applied to the Planet, I guess it makes little sense that other planets going without any designation at all wouldn't make any sense. I would point out, when Venus and Mars were named, they weren't known to be planets, they were just somewhat different from all the other stars in the sky. Mars was named after the Roman god of war, for instance, because it was red and reminded folks of blood.

So, if the people in general never actually use the name of their own home Planet aloud, then what do they call any others in their system? I figure under Shinra it'd be something cold like "Planet-2243" or some other generic scientific designation, while in Cosmo Canyon they would use some actual name.

Maybe, but considering that wasn't the focus of the narrative or any part of it, or the themes that the creators wanted to convey, it was just never shed light. Such is the case with fiction. *sigh*

True enough. And fiction not covering everything people wonder about is the reason for fanwanking and speculation, eh?
