My favourite mags were
CVG (now computerandvideogames.com but its not the same) - cheap but cheerful, funny too. The middle pages were black ink on yellow paper with copies of readers drawings 'Drawinz wot you dun' which was just plain hilarious, most of the pics made 'Sefiros from Castlevania' there look like Botticelli's Birth of Venus.
Then there was Super Play (snes) which then became N64 magazine and later NGC (gamecube)
This was funny too, didn't take itself too seriously. They had a section called 'Game Spong' for people who were stuck (in the days pre-internet!) which later became 'Dr Kitts'. "
Dr Kitts would do anything for love...but he wont do that."
Oh and they had an RPG review section where the reviews were done by a Wizard, and the score was based on 'Beards out of 10'
I used to get the Official UK Playstation magazine, before it went shit (decided to follow suit with the majority of the game mags at the time and fill it with girls in bikinis in an attempt to be FHM or something- nothing wrong with nudy women, but it doesn't make up for a complete lack of good journalism)
Now I just go on Eurogamer, which is pretty good, but its just not the same as reading a game mag on the bus home from school with a mars bar and a can of coke. ;_;
