Ghost in the Shell: Arise

Kazuchika Kise, who was the animation director for the first new Evangelion movie and Blood+ (amongst about a zillion other things) will be head director, while Tow Ubakata, who wrote Le Chevalier D'Eon, Mardock Scramble and Fafner is the scriptwriter.

The website confirms the staff information, and announces that a "Ghost in the Shell Arise Production Presentation" will be streamed live worldwide on February 12 at 9:00 p.m. in Japan (7:00 a.m. EST) on Niconico, Bandai Channel, and YouTube. The event itself will be held at the nicofarre event hall in Tokyo.

Excited but I don't want to keep my hopes too much. I've watched Tow Ubakata's Fafner and though it raises existentialist stuff it wasn't very impressive. Stilll... want this!

Critique so far... Motoko here is too thin, I love her older designs where she has muscular shoulders and realistic thighs.

I've no doubt it will be pretty, Innocence was, but I think we can all agree plot wise Innocence wasn't as satisfying. I liked SSS more.

' sides, I miss the old style animation. Too much reliance on cgi and "standardised" animation these days, I feel at the expense of detail and character. Blah blah..... Kids these days..... Blah blah...grumble grumble.

Also I'd like to rescind my prior comment about it being a prequel.

That incarnation of the Major looks closer to the adolescent one she ended up with at the end of the first film. So I dunno it could be either. Dunno how canon it is but I thought SAC revealed she'd been in a cyborg body from a young age?

While I agree with you that Innocence was kind of...strange plot wise, it wasn't a horrible movie. It may not be one that I go out of my way to watch, but it was alright. We still have the first movie, though. And Stand Alone Complex, which this just reminds me that I still haven't seen that show in it's entirety.

I fucking love ALL THE GHOST IN THE SHELL and although I'll admit that Oshii has serious pacing issues as a director he has amazing vision and visual flair, and Innocence was just short of what I'd consider to be his magnum opus imo

In terms of Stand Alone Complex, though, it's possibly one of the best anime series I've seen in a while. Kenji Kamiyama at his best cannot be beat, for srs. But I'll give this a chance I guess.

I'm of the opinion this may or may not be a prequel because Kamiyama is reportedly having no involvement in this new series whatsoever. Still, I do like Motoko's new design itself (the hairstyle being very reminiscent of the Oshii incarnation of the Major): although I have a huge beef with the bright blue hair and eyes. I know that the manga itself had a very vibrant palette for her but I really much prefer the purple and auburn irises from Stand Alone Complex, a much more striking design, in my opinion.

Visually this looks like a top Production I.G work, which I would want nothing less from. If there's one company I'd want doing digital anime, I.G would be it. They're one of the original masters of the digital medium.

Also there's plenty of articles you can find on Google, but Nexon (Maple Story, Combat Arms, etc.) have gotten rights to a Stand Alone Complex MMO. Coincidence?

To be honest I'm a little miffed at the new designs. They all seem to have more comically disproportionate facial features (smaller eyes/noses and gigantic foreheads for some reason) compared to the designs from the Oshii/Kamiyama titles. I would have thought that the new Kusanagi looked better in motion, and while she does I personally don't think any of the other characters do. Batou's short hair was nice, though.

But ugh some of the other guys just look stupid to me. Paz and Boma lolololo
