It's not out here for another month. Hooray, I get to spend a month avoiding spoilers for yet another thing.
Sandra Bullock was interviewed on Jonathan Ross tonight. As usual, I love her <3
EDIT: Why is it released everywhere in the world except here on the 4th of October? I'm officially confused. It's even already out everywhere else in Europe.
It's been days after I saw this and I still can't form coherent thoughts on how much I love it.
Acting, pacing, soundtrack.. everything's a thumbs up. I was expecting it to be more intense but the whole thing just felt so real as it is and that makes it scarier.

If they use that as an argument, it's a bullshit one imho - they have a script and are settled on the actual shots / lines to be used long before it's released, plenty of time to send it to a translation agency for subtitling, imho. A bit of planning ahead never hurt anyone, .
Maybe it's the much more localized / fragmented distributors in Yurp / the rest of the world, though.
I honestly was worried that I'd built myself up for it too much. I managed to completely avoid spoilers so I went in fresh (aside from trailers and those only really show the super early stuff) but
I can't express how much I love this movie. I love Sandra Bullock so much. About 12 of us ended up going. And everyone had their "OH FOR FUCK SAKE!" moments. For me it's when she can't get out of the shuttle and the water is rushing in, I was like WILL THIS MADNESS NEVER END LEAVE HER ALONE UNIVERSE and I lol'd at the troll with Clooney's character returning being her imagination but I think everyone kind of saw that one coming, it was too unbelievable that he'd floated back somehow.
I just love it. Her depression and all the metaphors, the general beauty of this movie, her life-gauntlet born-again ness. I love that she found it within her to live even though there's not really much for her back on earth. I fucking love the way this movie ended. I love everything about it. It was thrilling, she's my favourite actress, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I seriously want to watch it again.
Also there was a slight mishap at the start of the movie. At the cinema we were at (the proper IMAX with a screen the size of 12 double decker buses or something ridiculous like that, seriously it was huge) you have the previews, then just before the movie starts someone comes out to verbally introduce the movie/ give instructions.
Well this person's microphone was not working. The cinema was packed, and in our excitement everyone was like "NO ONE CAN HEAR YOU FFS". Also the lights go on when that happens.
So then the movie starts and the lights are still on. Then after a minute everyone is shouting "LIGHTS FFS, TURN THE FUCKING LIGHTS OFF WE'RE IN SPACE!" and then the poor guy runs back down to turn off the lights and goes
"ladies and gentlemen, we apolo-" "NO ONE CAN HEAR YOU!!!" (because the microphone is still not working).
lol. And now we've missed the first 5 minutes so everyone is now shouting "RESTART THE GODDAMN MOVIE!" After the lights FINALLY go off. They restart the movie after letting us watch another minute or so then in the silence I shouted out (much to my own surprise and amusement) "If those lights go back on I SWEAR TO LUCIFER..." and everyone in the cinema bursts out laughing.
People were just shouting out in a joking-way, nothing in a nasty tone or anything and the whole thing was hilarious. I'm glad they were gracious enough to start the movie again. The whole thing was just very un-British, normally we would just keep quiet and let the bad things happen but everyone was in an excited mood .
Lex, your enthusiasm and all of the content of your post just made my whole fucking day. <3
SOOOOOOOO glad that you finally got to see it, and that it lived up to everything you'd hoped, and that I was REALLY wanting it to for you, and fucking good on ya for yelling!
Actually yes, Squall does turn up. It turns out that the debris field was being controlled by a sorceress, so Squall comes in to destroy it with his gunblade while Rinoa rescues Sandra Bullock with the Ragnarok.
You two are playing with fire or crying wolf or playing spoiler-roullette or something, at some point Octo will click a spoiler tag with an actual spoiler in it
I went in completely fresh, having seen no trailers, read/watched no interviews and without going anywhere near the Wikipedia page.
It was an absolute delight. The last movie I saw to have used 3D well enough to justify its presence was "Transformers: Dark of the Moon," but this was so far beyond that even. You actually forget that you're watching in 3D, which I think should be the objective of 3D's use in film. Generally, I hate it because it's a gimmick tacked on so they can charge an extra $4 per ticket. With this movie, it's a vital component of the experience.
And all this praise is without even getting into how well the actors sell the thing and those amazing long cuts. I just can't say enough about how great it is. Every last detail was wonderful.
I also have to give myself a pat on the back for thinking
"That fire extinguisher she just pulled down with her just to get it out of the way of the hatch is going to save her life in space." I knew it would be relevant again both because a) it's there and b) how seriously freakin' useful it would be out there.
The ending
was perfect. I loved the metaphor of it, how she almost drowned even once she was "safely" back on Earth. I felt that it was saying that even when we overcome our greatest obstacles, we have smaller ones to overcome in order to keep going as well.
It waa really good for me to see this when I did. I'm not one to talk about my personal life very much, but this past month has been shit for me. Actually, most of this year has sucked. It was very inspirational to me, as I was able to apply the film's metaphors to what has been going on in my own life. Stuck out there, knowing where she needed to go but unable to get there, unsure if she still even wanted to try, Sandra Bullock was me. And that was probably the point.
I'm starting to think this film is for people who are pretty down in the dumps lol. It's a very brutal, awkward kind of inspiration. But it works so damn well. I'm dying to see it again tbh.
I don't wanna see it again anytime soon. I hope that after enough time has passed, I will forget everything and the experience will be just as fresh and intense as the first time. D'=
