Hi, How Are Ya?

Hello everyone!

I've been lurking for a while (ever since the FFVII remake was announced, I guess) and decided to finally register and maybe even participate a little. There's a lot of passion and knowledge in this community, and it reminds me why I fell in love with FFVII to begin with.

I was about 12 when the game originally came out. The first time I played it, I was at my friend's house. There were some...immature names given to the characters that time, but very soon after that I got it for myself and did things just a little more respectfully. It was the first game I remember that I was completely absorbed in, and I even went so far as to write some fan fiction for it...I may even still have that sitting around somewhere, but I'm afraid to even look for it.

I believe that FFVII is what sparked my interest in RPGs of all kinds, even table top games. It's left a lasting impression on me, and though I haven't replayed it often over the years after, I listen to the soundtrack regularly to this day and still associate strong emotion with many of the tracks.

I'm a mediocre artist and and aspiring writer. There's also a day job that I almost never acknowledge on the internet, because why bother? Anyway, allow me to preemptively thank you for having me :D

You are far from alone in your prescribing of immature names - such an action is always for a very worthy cause.

First off, hello and welcome! :joy:

Welcome aboard! :monster:

As a new member, would you be interested in a tutorial thread on correct usage of the :monster: emote? Thank you for taking this survey.

I have seen the :monster: emote around, and I must confess that its true meaning and usage is lost on me. So yes?

Alllllllow me to be of service! :awesome:
Maybe this handy chart can help!
Cookie monster indicates many things. It can be used all sorts of ways! Like Emotions~

Happy - I finally got my check today! :awesomonster:
Love - OMFG I ate some burgers and let me tell you they were awesome :monster:
Excited - Holy shit I just bought a house :monster:
Surprise - The fuck did you say? :monster:
Anger - STFU :monster:
Sadness - My dog died. Fuck this :monster:
Fear - I just heard a noise outside the house and now I don't want to walk down the hall to use the bathroom :monster:
Lazy - I cba :monster:
Sarcasm - (for new members I'll not use the obscure Zolom/Cthulhu joke, sorry Joe :awesome:) You are so smart. Did you get a degree for all that smartness? :monster:

And so on and so forth. :monster: Use cookie monsters all sorts of ways. :monster: It's like a really cool experiment! :monster:

It's also been equated to being similar to the word 'fuck' by another lovely member, what with all the emotional usage. So use it for anything really. Go to town with it :monster:

I don't think we need to explain the Cookie Monster to all our newcomers, and more to the point, I don't think we should be explaining it. It took me a few months to figure out why other people were using it and a few more to start using it myself, but honestly, I think that's part of the beauty of it. It carries so many meanings that it's important for each new member to go through their own process of learning, to understand exactly what it means to them.

TL;DR: :monster:

Also, welcome!

^Well, I was doing it purely for fun and as a joke, but if it's weird or deemed unnecessary, I don't mind stopping. :monster:

I do agree by the way, it's open to interpretation depending on who's using it. :monster:

I've seen many a mediocre artist do well, it is all about networking. Makes me wonder how many awesome artists I'm missing out on simply because they're shit at networking. Anyways, enough about that. Welcome aboard :monster:.

It's more that a lot of people think I'm good, but I look to professional artists and know that I really don't compare to people who actually know what they're doing. But hey, it brought out a Fury Road reference without my intention, and I'll take accidental awesomeness over none at all

Thank you everyone for the welcomes. And don't worry, Flintlock. The explanation of how to use :monster: was basically "The first rule of :monster: is that there are no rules for :monster:"

...:monster:????

With art, you're always learning something and the more you do it, the 'better' you get at it. In my case I'm always seeing artists who are a lot better than me at something, like digital drawings or sculptures, ect. But I think what you need to do is recognize that your art is it's own thing, one of a kind, and thus, there's no need to compare it to others. Once you find your style especially, that's your style. No one else can create your art, it comes from your own mind.

TL;DR don't compare your art to other's too much. :monster:

Yeah, I know. And to be honest, I don't really do that to myself anymore. I like to draw, I've dabbled in digital painting and would like to get better at it. But art isn't my focus, and I've never really seen it as a potential career. My interest and real passion has always been for writing (at least since age 10 or 12 - right around the same time FFVII first came out, actually). I've seriously considered combining art and writing and working on a comic, but I tend to think a little too big for me to make much headway. I think I have my own, mostly unique style for that sort of thing. But most of my free time goes to writing with my wife, because we would eventually like to make that our career.

TL;DR Thank you for the advice/support, I tend to come off more self-deprecating than I actually am ;)

Hello.

Did you blue yourself?

What's behind the name?

The name is the most current in a long line of shifts from the original name I started to use online, mostly related to gaming.

A long, long time ago, I started playing these awesome new mods for Half-life called Counter Strike and Day of Defeat. Back then, I was in high school, and I very strong identified with my German ancestry. So my in-game name was The Mad German, which fit well because I usually used the German counter-terrorist in CS and preferred the German side in DoD because I was really really good with the K98 bolt-action rifle.

Anyway, after a while I actually began to encounter actual German people online and realized that it was odd for an American kid to identify himself as German (especially when they tried to speak German to me - it would be overly kind to myself to say I understand anything more than a few random words). Inspired by a fantasy novel, I switched it up to The Mad Baron (still my Steam ID to this day, because of laziness).

Over the years, I've gone through cycles of installing/uninstalling Call of Duty 4 (still holds up in my opinion), and I got a little tired of the same name on there all the time. My rank would be reset every time, so I figured "Why not change things up?"

Thanks to my father, I've always been a big Beatles fan, so I went to the name The Blue Meanie, from the Yellow Submarine animated movie. Around the same time, I tried to become The Blue Baron (like the Red Baron only bluer), but that never seemed to be free. So Baron became Bandit, and I thought that was pretty cool because it reminded me of Flik from the Suikoden games. That's stuck, mostly because it's usually free when I register for things.

Not very interesting now that I type it all out, but that is the evolution of it, anyway.
