Do you guys think Aerith can hit short range as well as long range? I suppose it wouldn’t make sense not to, though clearly she’s encouraged to be in the “back line.”
I'm pretty sure she was flinging projectiles at the Sahuagin in the State of Play coverage; I don't think I've seen her staff physically connect with an enemy yet (though someone feel free to correct me).I think she might have modes that make her front line or back line respectively. I think that “modes” might be a spiritual successor to “change” from the OG. Sometimes in the combat footage you see Cloud’s AI holding a defensive stance, and sometimes you see him whacking away — is this Punisher mode? In the State of Play trailer, you saw Aeris AI gettin up close and pokin sahuagin, but she uses ranged attacks on the new footage vs. Aps.

Damn, I had to edit to Bolt 1 - how embarrassing!Bolt 1 looks really unstable lol. It’s not so much “hit the target with the magic spell” and more “activate materia to KKKGGHHHH”
As Mr. Ite says, Barret used it against the scorpion boss (technically, he used Thunder, but same deal). I'm guessing Aerith used Thundara or maybe even Thundaga, maybe with some kind of support materia equipped. Maybe instead of just "all" materia, there's a type that concentrates a spell's effect around you like a shield or something.Damn, I had to edit to Bolt 1 - how embarrassing!
This depends on a few things I guess - firstly whether it IS indeed Bolt 1. It may well be Tempest as Chip says, hence why it might look more unstable/powerful. Though personally I think Tempest would indicate some storm clouds and possibly rain/water on top of electricity?
Or maybe, if it is Bolt 1, perhaps Aerith's use of magic produces a greater visual effect or something, given her "Mage" status? I dunno, it's just that compared to Cloud's use of Fire 1 in the other trailer it certainly seems much more - again - unstable, as you put it.
Oh yeh, I just put that down to it having a stronger effect on mechanical enemies at the time. But I guess they just enjoy implementing the electrical FX lol. When Barret uses it vs Guard Scorpion, it‘s similarly frenetic iirc. Sadly I can’t reference the video to compare the two right now. Also I recall they’ve changed the name, maybe to thunder (in keeping with other FFs)
I guess this depends on whether or not the other two party members join you on the field. Which is a question I’ve asked on here and elsewhere many a time, but to no avail.Got a question. Any idea how the transition from exploring to battle works? We only see Cloud while just walking about, but the party is around during battle. Assuming the combat doesn't transition from the main environment to a battle environment, how is that supposed to actually work....

I was running on the assumption that the Aps fight is now midgame, since the game ends with the escape from Midgar. I don't think they can keep the gameplay progression the same as the OG--if you only get access to powerful magic in the second or third game, then magic use in the first game is gonna be really boring. Getting new spells is half the fun, right?Oh yeh, I just put that down to it having a stronger effect on mechanical enemies at the time. And I still got it wrong then as I wrote lightning! I blame this on still not catching up on sleep after last night ...
@Cannon_Fodder - Thundara or Thundaga this early in the game? Or just for trailer purposes?

One way around this is for materia to level up in the same way, or almost in the same increments, as the characters. Somehow. Like Thunder Levels 1-20; Thundaga Levels 21-40, etc. Just for argument's sake.I was running on the assumption that the Aps fight is now midgame, since the game ends with the escape from Midgar. Those are both good ideas! As long as there's some kind of power increase between the bombing mission and the Midgar escape I'll be happy. Leaves a lot of room for stronger materias in later games too.Three levels per materia? Fire 1, fire 2, fire 3, fira 1, fira 2, fira 3? Or blue materia that changes their behaviors?
It's the other way around. Operator Mode is default, press triangle to switch to the slower, more powerful Punisher Mode. It is Cloud's unique ability activated by the triangle button.I'm pretty sure Punisher Mode is something you activate for Cloud to swing his sword faster, doing more damage to enemies (maybe all the way around him). Like the combo he uses here. You can then press triangle to go back to Operator Mode, his default stance with slower swings.
I think Aerith is casting magic there, not using Tempest. It doesn't look like triangle was pressed anyway.
