How come Cloud and the others could hear the cry of the planet?

That reminds me of something...what was it...?

Where people started getting abilities or summat by coming into contact with someone/thing...?

If exposure to Mako is a reason, then a lot more people would hear it. I guess there's nothing that says nobody else hears it, either...

^ extremely high levels

In reference to my earlier thought - the answer is Bleach, and Ichigo's effect on Orihime and Sado.

Well, not everyone cares high level city destroy materia.

But maybe they hear it, simply because they were listening. The fact that they cared so much about the planet, let it share it's feelings with them.

But wouldn't there be extremely high levels of Mako in/around Mako reactors, as well?

I'm reading the game script, and from that it seems like it's just as simple as Bugenhagen taught them about it, and told them what it is, that's why they can hear it.

Being around mako/mako reactors wouldn't expose you to the abundance of knowledge in the lifesteam like materia does.

So simple it makes little sense.

I guess everyone just skipped over Cetra's official explanation.

People have already called for the supposed Ultimania page. Until it's presented why would we linger on that?

So it's knowledge from the Ancients through the Materia, not exposure to high levels of Mako energy that could cause them to hear the Planet's cry?

If I'm recalling the events of the game correctly, the first time they hear the cry of the planet is when they visit Cosmo Canyon for the first time and are in Bugenhagen's Observatory.

So how then, official explanation or not, do they hear it there?

You're only maybe... 1/4th, 1/3rd through the game, so you don't have as much as you do near the end, nor is it normally high-powered by this point.

Aerith is not some goddess with a magical connection to everyone one beyond the fucking grave, come on people.

I never meant that she was 'some magical Goddess', just that being in contact with a Cetra might highten their awareness. <=/ And actually, she does have connections with people beyond the grave. Marlene can sense her, so can Kadaj, and the children. Tifa can also sense her present after the Great Gospel in AC/ACC. It's said that Aerith exists in every part of the world... observe:
Two years after returning to the planet, Aerith still lives on in the hearts of her friends who saved the planet. And in particular to Cloud, as a symbol of his failure to having being unable protect those dear to him, she was a major factor in causing him to close himself off. For Cloud, and the world once again faced with danger, she reaches out and offers her aid. In that sense she is like a mother watching over the entire planet, and it gives the feeling that she lives in every part of the world.

It makes sense that being with a person who's fate is to watch over the entire planet, and protect it, would cause her comrades to hear what she does, especially if they have a strong connection with her. At least, it does to me.

Just being near Aerith is not going to give them the same capabilities as her, that's dumb.

You're dumb. ;( Fine, I don't KNOW why they can communicate with the planet. THEY JUST CAN. Happy? >=(

1. You don't have to be a Cetra to hear the planet. Bugenhagen is a perfect example. The cetra simply have an innate knack for it, either by blood or by culture.

2. The planet cries loud enough, you're in the perfect listening outpost, natch.

3. The real trick isn't listening, it's understanding and talking back.

I believe I found the Ultimania source:

***The Ancients*** (Page 214) (005.2)
The race also called "the Cetra," these people lived on the Planet in ancient
times. The Forgotten Capital and the Temple of the Ancients along with nature
and a single woman are their only remaining traces.

They spoke with the Planet and helped to cultivate it, channeling the
Lifestream to many places, inciting an abundant cycle of life. When Jenova
came from outer space, some of them moved to the North Pole in an attempt to
ease the Planet's wound which had come as a result of the collision [between
the Planet and the meteor Jenova had been riding]. Using its mimic ability,
Jenova got close to the Cetra and released its virus upon them, nearly
driving them to extinction.

Only two Ancients appear in the [game's] story: Aerith and Ifalna. Ifalna is
Aerith's mother and the last pure ancient. Due to her mixed heritage, Aerith's
ability to converse with the Planet is comparitively lower than her mother's
was.

(Accompanying screenshot caption)
As seen in situations with Aerith, the Ancients had a special ability to
speak with the Planet. They called it a "Planet reading."

------------------------
[Analysis: This section indicates that while normal humans can gain some of
the Cetra's abilities despite their lost heritage -- such as hearing the
Planet's cries (AVALANCHE and Bugenhagen) and even the ability to understand
it (Bugenhagen) -- genetics can play a role in the matter, as well. Due to
all humans on the Planet (Cetra and the normal humans) being descended from
the Cetra of the past, and because some ordinary humans gained some abilities
reminiscent of the Cetra (AVALANCHE and Bugenhagen gained the ability to hear
the Planet's cries, and Bugenhagen even interpreted words in the air at the
Forgotten Capital), it can be concluded that being a Cetra is a lifestyle or
culture, but that those who are directly descended from "practicing Cetra"
are more easily attuned to the abilities of the Cetra.

In other words, whereas normal humans have to actively pursue the rekindling
of their lost heritage, a child of one with Cetra abilities will likely be
experiencing those abilities whether they want to or not (as Aerith did). In
other words, being a Cetra is apparently both genetic and cultural.]

Seems like it's the author of this document's (not the Ultimania's) analysis, and not something 'canon' as presented in the actual Ultimania text.
