Lovely trailer! the melancholic atmosphere and the characters are very promising. Shame for only digital, because this game need a physical release with an artbook.
Day one anyway:monster:

Playing it now on my Vita, physical release. One of the pros of being able to read Japanese.

So far the game is great. Make no mistake it's a really back to basic, minimalistic game, so you're not going to get anything "special" from it, but what it does, it does really well.
It's a completely straight forward JRPG that tells a story in a way that will resonate with fans of games like FF3, 4 and 5, with the basic gameplay of Chrono Trigger.
The soundtrack is completely piano driven, and the entire game is set in a world of snow, which might seem underwhelming to some but works really well for this game in the sense that it's relatively short and compact in everyhing it does, which to me, is a positive because it never overstays its welcome.

It's got a lot of quaint little details that really flesh out the game though - like how trails are left in the snow as your characters move, how weapons change appearance, a giant log-book that stores all info on characters, items, equipment etc, where you can read lore and watch 3D models up close, and many other things.

It's certainly not a game for everyone, but if you grew up playing SNES and PS1 JRPGs you'll probably feel right at home with this one for the 20-30 hours it will take you to beat it.

I like the graphics, they remind me of something....sort of PS1 slightly jagged round the edges. I likes it. I likes it a lot. Doubt I'll be able to play it any times soon :sadpanda:

I'm 6 or so hours in now and about to get the air-ship unless the plot decides to do something funky. So far it's like a less contrived version of FFX.

Every once in a while a sacrifice has to be made to stop the world from being overrun by monsters.
The last sacrifice, you find out, never actual got sacrificed (got killed on the way) and so monsters are increasing and so Setsuna sets out on to set things right.

The game follows "Endo" (the name will probably be slightly changed in localization), a mercenary who gets hired to kill Setsuna at the beginning of the game for some unspecified reason, but gets a change of heart (and a beating) and ends up joining her when he figures out she's going to die anyways.

There seems to be some conspiracy going on with some baddies killing sacrifices, and there's probably some sort of plot-twist waiting around the entire "need to sacrifice young women to stop the monsters" thing.

The main character reminds me a lot of the Dark Knight (Kain?) from FF4, and Setsuna is obviously a Yuna, albeit a slightly more proactive Aerith-like Yuna at that.

I think the people who made this game really like FFX though, because a couple of hours in you meet "Yomi", a man who was the guardian of the previous sacrifice (the one who failed) and he is really similar in both plot-position and visual design to Auron that it hurts. Add that to the sacrifice plot thing, and it really does give off a strong FFX vibe.

The character progression is kinda slow though, so I've yet to really get attached to any of the characters, though the main-character is really starting to grow on me with his really sour, grumpy mercenary attitude (kinda rare for a JRPG I'd say).

The game also has a pretty funky character building system -
There's no armor. You equip accessories with various stat properties (like increased critical rates, or faster ATB movement) and skill slots.
Skills, which you essentially buy/generate using drops from enemies are then equipped to the accessory slots.

You also don't get any cash from defeating enemies. You have to sell the various stuff you get from them (fangs, fur etc.) to get money.

It's a bit wonky, but it also means you have to think a bit strategically and sort out what to sell and what to keep to buy/generate new skills.

I think there is already a thread for this. I think it looks pretty neat. Definite FFX vibe. :)

Oh, ok, I assume that a mod somewhere can merge it, then :P

I got more of a Golden Sun/Chrono Trigger vibe.

All of which are good things :D

Which really makes me wanna do a Golden Sun thread......

But yeah, just reading the site

The island had a custom
To maintain peace, once a decade, a sacrifice was offered to a fiend on the island. However, one year, the fiend grew violent before the next sacrifice was due. Those living on the island were afraid and tried to calm the fiend by offering a sacrifice; Setsuna, chosen because of her powers of enchantment. Setsuna must leave with her safeguards for the farthest land, where the ceremony of sacrifice will be held.

Sounds kind of familiar to me. :monster:

Yeah :P

I was going purely off visuals, hadn't even looked into the story.

Downloading it now, no idea when I'll get around to playing it, though. It came out the same day as the new FFXIV patch, lol.

Battle system like Chrono Trigger, graphics like FFIIIDS, story like X. If it didn't seem as generic as Tales of Destiny I would be really pumped.

Played through the Japanese version a little while back, and I thought it was a nice little game. That's about all I can say for it.

I'm looking forward to playing this one, it looks so nostalgic and the all piano sound track is a definite plus for me. It's just a shame I have sod all free time to sink into gaming at the moment :( I've heard it only lasts about 20 hours which is good for me I guess.
