At the very least, you should give IX a go. It starts off more fairytale-like, with rogues and princesses and whatnot, but it's awesome.

Speaking of, I bought it like a few years ago, but haven't gotten around to finishing it.

I didn't vote because VII and XII are tied for teh best with me. I cannot effin' pick between them.

Second would be IX.

I'm reserving judgment on 3rd place until I get my copy of FFT: War of the Lions. I have a feeling it'll be third, right before X.

I liked FFIX because it had a moar traditionally 'fantasy' feel to it than most of the other moar recent games (though I haven't played XII). I never particularly liked the way FF did sci-fi, though the steampunk feel of FFVI was cool.

I suggest you find a way to play the NTSC version of FFIX, even if you play PAL (european) versions of games. Only with the NTSC one can you ever create a perfect save file AND get the legendary "Excalibur II" (which requires you to get to the ending point of the game in under 12 hours). The PAL version of the game plays slower than the NTSC one, so yeah that's why...

Order for me has to be 6 as my fave followed by 7, 9, Tactics, Crisis Core, 10, 8 and havent played 12 yet so can't comment.

IX is my personal favorite; I don't know why exactly - I guess I just really liked the overall tone and setting. VI, VII, and XII are my other favorites.

I voted for Final Fantasy VII because it has a great storyline, great songs, awesome gameplay, unique boss battles, fun mini games and side quest. That is why Final Fantasy VII is the most famous Role Playing Game ever made.
