OMG ITS SO CUTE <3333

But am I the only one who can't play old games and be immersed in them like new games?

IDK I'm kind of a graphics whore, and also picky. I don't get into many games at all TBH.

Like I played Dark Souls, Demon Souls, Dragon Age and Dragon Age 2 but I dropped them all eventually because I got bored of them even though I really like them at first.

The only real games I've fully beaten are Final Fantasy XII and old pokemon lol, and almost FFVI.

Anyway when somebody sees this can it be changed to "Do you Finish Games?" instead, seems like the direction of the topic by the time I finished this post. ^___^

I'm not bothered about graphics really, I think that gameplay is more important. What usually puts me off is bad controls. When I got FF6 I gave up on it after having to traverse a mountain region, there is no diagonal control for movement in that game, but the paths we're all sloping and I just found it clunky and frustrating. Really pissed me off that they bothered to render new cutscenes but didn't bother to update the controls. Coupling that with the random battles (which are annoying for me in any RPG) and I just gave up. This occured quite early on, so maybe I could have forgiven it if I felt more immersed in the story.

Right now I'm playing Beyond Good and Evil, which I missed out on first time round, I don't know if I'll end up completing it or not but so far I'm enjoying it.

I'm very picky about games, but the ones I do play I have usually read up on them to see if they're going to float my boat. The majority of games that I play, I complete. Except the most recent Mario Bros on the Wii. That last boss is fucking horrific >_<

I would replay FFIX and disregard the graphics, but that's because I played them when their graphics were still somewhat acceptable (except VII, which is shit no matter how you look at it :monster: ). I'm less inclined to go and pick up a ye olde classic I never played, for the reasons mentioned earlier.

Also, in the case of FF'S VII, VIII and IX, even though the character models are a bit dated (extremely dated in VII's case) the pre rendered backdrops are still amazing. I guess I'm old fashioned, but I've always liked that look, I think it makes things more cinematic in a way, because like in a film, your viewpoint is dictated and you just have to look at the scenery.

There was lots of nice scenery in X, but you spent a lot of the time looking at Tidus' shorts :/

YESSSS. That's why FFXII was so welcomed from me, I absolutely hate random battles. I've only ever found them in pokemon and even then there are preset areas where I know it's inevitable.

Also I do like the pre rendered backgrounds and the models are even acceptable a lot of the time, it's just all a little lack luster once you've played current gen games IMO.

I use to have issues with VI and earlier because of gfx problems, although Chrono Cross, BoFIII, and Chrono trigger did eventually win me over. Games around FFVII-IX are no problem with me because they at least can emote and react visibly and the environments are gorgeous so I have no problem immersing myself in the world.

I need good graphics just to the point where I can realize the world and gameplay, that and be the story to be able to have the mood/tension it's trying to show. Although I do sometimes laugh when I'm playing an older game and the game looks clunky, I can't help it.

Although I think with IX, it works well with the mood of the game. The characters themselves are kind of cartoony, and the backgrounds in IX are some of the most gorgeous ones in Final Fantasy. The game is beautiful.

If a game is good enough and fun, I don't really need top notch graphics to get into it. Probably why I enjoy my handhelds so much. :)

Games I can never seem to finish are the ones where there's so much to do! I get so overwhelmed that I don't know what the next thing is that I should do. Dragon Age is a good example of this. The main reason for this is that I'm a perfectionist; I NEED to get everything; every hidden secret, every mission, every treasure. I'm sort of OCD with it to the point where I'll actually use a strat guide (online or book form) in order to actually motivate myself to beat a game.

I can honestly say I've beaten very few games. It doesn't help that time to play a video game varies for me. I can play a game for a whole week straight but, then for the next month I get overloaded with school, work and family hogging the TV and so, I can't play again until...well, yeah. And by then, I don't remember where I left off or what I was doing. :T

I've only beaten about a handful of games. The rest, I've started but never managed to get through. Although, I have beaten every single Zelda game I've bought. :) And of course, a majority of the FFs. ^_^

I love FF9 ... but it's only the graphics that worry you ?

You're not weirded out by the Hippo people, Duck women, Polar Bear men and a main character than has a tail ?

I never not liked FFIX's graphics, not just because it's my favourite FF game (okay... maybe a bit), but because it created the ideal atmosphere for these weird characters to live in. For me, it was the last fantasy game in a series that is called Final Fantasy and that says a lot. It's fairy-tale-ish, it's messy, it's cartoonish and VERY beautiful. The cutscene with Winged Alexanger is my absolute favourite from any FF game.

yes, TS, it's very cute XD. fits to it's title. it was the first FF game i played, and so i thought most other series of that game were the same in terms of atmosphere, etc. i'm wrong though. :D

back then i can say that those kind of graphics are already awesome, & the game isn't frustrating. i even enjoyed chocobo hot n' cold. XD

i can say that there are memorable places for me on the game that i can still think of til now. (cuz it was a long time ago since the first time i played it.) like treno, cleyra, burmecia, Ipsen's castle (the tonberries XD). but i've DL'ed it again on my PSP along with FFT WOTL.

I'm playing FFIX with a new-school gamer (wow... I remember when VII came out and I was considered a new school gamer :P) and she has zero problems with the graphics. I am still impressed by them -- the way the characters' heads turn to look at passing objects, the way it reflect the artistic direction and the way that the images help the tell the story... I mean, that's all I really ask of graphics.

I get that some (most?) people prefer style over substance, but the reason I got into FFs (as a non-gamer) was because they had both in ample supply, and even when they're dated they're great. Books don't go out of style either.

Graphics-wise though, FFIX really did push the PS1 system to its limits almost all of the time, it's one of the most ambitious projects for the system. I've seen PS3 games that were lazier and looked worse. The problem people seem to have with it is its art direction, which I understand but can't empathize with.

My favourite FF.

IX's graphics are still quite amazing. Like Ite said, though, some folks -- myself included -- aren't particularly thrilled with the art direction.

I appreciate it for what it is and what they were trying for. They succeeded. It's immersive, consistent, vivid, memorable. All the things it should be.

For that matter, I love the architecture and mechanical designs. The monster designs are good shit too. Moogles. The chocobos. Weapons. All excellent.

It's just the goddamn people and animal people designs that kill me (Black Mages and Vivi being the exceptions). But, then, I came into FF with FFVII and its highly anime-influenced art designs.
