If the remake let you do dumb ass plays in Event Square in Gold Saucer, that would be dope as hell.

In the original game, the Event Square's one and only purpose is for the date sequence. But in the remake, it would be really cool if they had tons of plays for the player (i.e., Cloud and co) to participate in to make awesome or ruin at your leisure. Different plays with different outcomes could award different scenes, items, or bonuses. To those who have played Suikoden III, they explored a similar concept, but not as fleshed out.

I kinda hope that the game lets you have a proper play with Barret, rather than having it cut short by a Gold Saucer employee who says, "You are our 100th couple today... Oh, wait... no you're not... Sorry." I think it would be hilarious.

Alternately, B & C could argue that they're not a couple and wouldn't want to do the play anyway. That would still be preferable to having the employee make the decision for them because they're both men.

You should be able to watch Loveless in it's entirety too (the proper version not the Genesis bullshit thing) Also, the plays could all be based on other FF's.

I like this idea, having different plays to 'play' would be tons of fun. Also, if they did that, then they would have to include one based on Loveless. (@Octo, "Genesis bullshit thing" :awesome: LOL)
Bonus points if for each play you get to pick the characters in the play yourself... meaning that it doesn't just have to be 'Cloud and someone', Cloud doesn't have to be in the play at all.

Extra bonus points if Reno can be drunk and narrate the whole thing.

I think I'll find myself making a separate save file before that part of the game - just in case the options are a'plenty. It will only be right to go back over and over and experience every combination

^ You're assuming there won't just be an autosave feature that always overwrites the previous save. It's becoming more and more common. :\

That would be cool to see. Imagine bumping into an NPC that says they've seen Maria and Draco, but it got ruined when the director added a scene with an Octopus...

There's still always an option for making manual saves though? I haven't played a game that doesn't give you that option at least, it would be a stupid feature to remove.

Sonic Generations only has one autosave file. MGSV does that as well. There might be more I've played that I can't remember off the top of my head.

It is pretty stupid.

If the remake had only an autosave feature and no actual save slots for whenever you wanted them/at save points, I would consider SE dumb as f***. :monster:

I never stopped playing video games, but I'm essentially new to the "modern" era, as I skipped owning a console during the PS3/etc generation. I played some of those games secondhand at friends' houses and what have you, but mostly I just kept playing my PS1 and PS2 games (and getting new ones). In any case, the reason I bring this up is that I too was somewhat horrified by this autosave feature that is present in so far all of the PS4 games I have, and not only does it throw me off when I'm attempting to save when I want, but it also has resulted in my game saving when I specifically DON'T want it to. If they wanna include these features (in ANY game), it should really just be a matter of a simple 'disable' switch, after which you save in a traditional 'manual' fashion or else lose your progress. Two steps forward...

Are you guys talking about the mere presence of ANY autosave (which I think that having a dedicated 'Auto Save/Load' slot is a good idea, considering that it's a failsafe against forgetting to save and dying/power loss/lapses of stupid) in addition to manual save slots, or games where the only saving option is autosaving?

Again, as annoying as it is in other games, I don't really see the latter in RPGs very often at all. Has this ever even been in a Square Enix developed game at all? I understand your ire, but I think you guys are being needlessly cynical.

I miss save points in modern games TBH. Played Resident Evil 2 awhile back and I remember enjoying being actually punished for dying. Backtracking is annoying at the time, but adds to the experience overall in many cases. Limited Ink Ribbons make the game more tense.

Although having half an hour of playtime to redo because you failed that QTE for the fifth time wouldn't be all that fun. There's merit to both.

For stuff like quick-time events wouldn't it make more sense for there to be some kind of checkpoint you get sent back to is you retry but having to redo the whole thing if you don't finish?

I remember when we first got RE1, we rented it and didn't have a manual, so we had no fucking idea what the ink ribbons were for

I wouldn't mind if the remake has save points to save at, it'd be kind of retro, so it'd be kind of fun (like them having save points in the same places as the og). However I also enjoy games that let you save any time (like Skyrim). Just because you can save any time doesn't mean you always remember to. :wacky:
For autosaves, I think they're fine, unless that was the only way to save the game... which tbh I've never played a game like that before, but if they're just added to the game, like an autosave when you leave a town and it does so in a separate slot, then that's fine. :monster:

I'd like some messed up/silly plays that closely parallel things happening in the story, sometimes in dark or humorous ways. Especially if it made Cloud think a little or shown a visual cue.

Did the play in FF7 have any narrative significance? I can't recall much about it.

It depends on the game really; I know in FF games (in emulator, infinite space y0) I'd create a new save at every save point, so I could go back and re-watch the cutscenes (which were the reward for playing imo). Likewise in modern games where you get to choose, although nowadays with infinite decisions I generally don't bother anymore (plus often I cba to replay a game differently anyway). Overall I just prefer autosaves, less hassle, and having to replay a long bit is annoying (I actually ragequit MGSV a few times over that)

Save points are a really outdated and unnecessary game mechanic. Even Pokemon has let you save pretty much anytime you want from the beginning. I'm hoping for a Dragon Age/Mass Effect type save system which combines save files and autosave, which is really convenient since it allows for redoing of parts you messed up while also making sure you don't have to redo hours of gameplay if you don't save often enough and you end up getting a Game Over. That said, the let you use Tent/Cottage function of them still has its niche, I think instead of getting rid of them all together they should simply rename them to campsites or something and make them for Tent/Cottage use. Their other niche, letting you access the PHS, shouldn't be included as one should be able to switch their party at any time(even mid-battle) in the remake, just like FFX and on let you do.

Flintlock

Pro Adventurer
Some interesting things to think about, for sure.

I quite like the idea of replacing save points with campsites, but in many places - inside reactors, for example - it just wouldn't make any sense to "camp". Also, if you can afford to buy one tent, why not just pack it up and re-use it at every site, much like people do in real life? It's just crazy to carry 99 tents around. :P But to take that idea further, why require tents at all when save points could just be free heals, as they are in X and XII?

There are some points of the game at which it makes sense to be able to switch characters on-the-fly, but there are others at which the party deliberately splits up - when leaving Midgar for the first time, for example - so either that would need to change or the free switching would need to be restricted to certain scenarios.

Starling

Pro Adventurer
Well, save points are free heals in Kingdom Hearts and manage to look fine in the setting so I guess going that route would make sense. I think allowing party switching whenever the situation doesn't require restricting it would be alright.
