IGN rates FFVII 6th best Final Fantasy

lol, XII has been such the Zelda game of FF. Always railed on but suddenly it was this masterpiece. And yet you still see the naysayers go on about how there hasn't been a good FF since 9.

Either way, can't say I agree with much of that list. 6 and 9 being near the top are givens, but I'd move just about every one somewhere else, haha.

@Octo, that should be X

Final Fantasy V is rated higher than VII? I mean look they got VI in the right spot by my reckoning and I might even accept them rating IX and IV higher than VII. XII in a pinch. But Final Fantasy V? No. The buck stops there. And as a personal gripe I would have swapped the orders of XIII and VIII. At least VIII felt like a broken Final Fantasy instead of a broken movie. :monster:

I agree that V shouldn't be better than VII, but frankly I'm more okay with that than IV and XII, no way they're better than VII. V is an enjoyable romp with a solid system. IV is...overrated with a bloated encounter rate, and XII has the questionable design decisions and weak cast I've oft mentioned. I'm generally of the mind that VI, VII, IX, and X are the best FF has to offer and so I'm really fine with them in any order.

XIII always gets a boost from me simply because I found the battle system fun to play. The story is a mess, but VIII doesn't really have a defense on that front either. It just isn't completely the dreaded linear. *dramatic spooky hands*

I also don't agree with II being last. There is literally no reason to play III. II has some interesting stuff about it, and a cool bad guy played by David Bowie.

^ I was about ready to slap you for that bit about XII but I'll forgive you because you said X was one of the best.

VIII lower than XIII? D:

Playing through VIII again and I'm barely halfway through and that game has already more diverse and fun content and sidequests than XIII which has, you know, nothing outside of monster hunts post-game.

XIII has an absolutely indefensible lack of content. Battle system was quite fun but in light of what came before and what series this is part of, it's pretty bad.

Everything else I don't care about because opinions tend to be different and shit :monster:
But this one I will fight you over :wacky:

I hate this list, but I'll give them points on doing everything they can to enrage fans while keeping their FF elitist card handy.

Still liked XIII a ton more than VIII, but I'm a rebel. I hated battle in VIII and I hated the characters and story. I think VIII is a better game though, but a the same way eggplant is better for the body that sugar. Yeah it's just empty calories but if I'm looking for a good time, I'm not going to be drawing. I've done a good portion of the extra content for both games, and VIII had more variety of things that annoyed me, while I actually really liked the challenge and figuring out the battles in the higher hunts but they were all one note.

But I also didn't like IV. It was a chore to play but unlike VIII I did start to like it better as the story began to unfold. VII was my first so going back from playstation always frustrates me, but I thought VI was really fun, it was just IV I couldn't get into.

As someone who liked XII, it's pretty amazing to see how the general attitude towards this game shifts over time. I'd wonder what happened, but then I remember, oh XIII came out and everyone lost their collective shit over it.

This is just IGN's modus operandi these days. They were tired of being the butt of every internet joke about game reviews (ign 9/10) so now they score things lower than they deserve and go all "2edgy5me" on lists.

It's OK IGN, you can stop now. Nobody will ever take you seriously, no matter what you try to do :monster:

To be fair, it's working. I mean, how often are you really going to see a thread about IGN here until this list. It seems their calling is to annoy fans. GG ign, wp.

No matter the order of the list people were going to disagree. I actually think the list makes sense (I haven't read the article).

V, VI, VII, IX, X, and XII being in any order towards the top makes sense to me. They all balance decent-to-awesome gameplay with decent-to-awesome story. VII is my favourite, sure. But I also know that my nostalgia glosses over plenty of things wrong with it.

VIII could honestly go anywhere on the list (but probably not at the top besides strong nostalgia reasons). It's gameplay system is abusable, rolleyes at the orphanage plot, and only two of the playable characters in the game matter anyway.

I guess FFXIII could also go pretty much anywhere on a list. I absolutely hate it, but I know some people really liked its battle system.

FFI and FFII should be low, but I would expect FFI to be higher unless you forgive FFII's gameplay mess for its more in-depth story. People will probably want to place FFI higher than it deserves for being the game that started all (and people might want to place FFII higher for introducing many of the FF staples).

And FFIV's one of those situations where the game is still playable in its original state despite its age, it introduced ATB, and just feels like a "standard Final Fantasy game". It's definitely not fourth best, but I can understand reasons for it being placed there.

I have no idea about FFIII since I haven't played.

So the only real problem I have with the list is FFX. Unless you don't like FFXIII's linearity and you want to pin it as the precursor to it. Its battle system fucking rules, Sphere Grid and weapon customisations are awesome, and its story is great...

Fuck you IGN. Fuck you.

I'm not going to try to rank them, this is just me rambling about my own experience.

I played FFX later than most of the rest of you, which hurt my experience a bit. Having already played 12 and 13 by that point, I fairly early on was assuming

It's going to be killing God again, isn't it?
The battle system is good, but you don't really get to use much of it until circa Bevelle, with the random encounters mostly just being 'oh, it's that type, tag in relevant character, done.'

IX would be my favourite, I can't think of anything major I didn't like about it.

VIII was a good game, and the battle system didn't bother me. It can be abused, but so can any system if you put in work, I don't really see how 'I can easily be overpowered if I do this' is a problem in a single player game -if you don't like it, just don't play it that way.

XII was a good game, but not a favourite, personally.

XIII had a great story and characters, which I forgive a lot for. It was actually kind of realistic in that your fugitive characters couldn't wander into a town without it being wrecked.

^No I'm doing it here :p

Good: FFVII, FFIX

OK: FFVIII, FFVI

Die in a Fire: FFX

and I haven't played enough of the others to consign them to the firey pit exactly but I don't like what I see of the post FFX ones, with the exception of FFXII which I think is probably pretty good if you like that sort of thing but I personally couldn't get into it, I guess it didn't really fit my expectations of what a FF game is supposed to be.

I honestly hate the "best FF" ranking attitude in general. All the FF games are mixed salads with some good and some bad parts, and in general what one game does really well, another might just as well do really poorly.
So which ones people like best just boils down to what sort of things resonate with them the most on a personal level - especially seeing how people often have story and characters as one of the biggest influences on what titles they prefer in the series, which are probably the most subjective elements in the games.

My favorite FF game is VII, period. I feel no need to defend or qualify that opinion above and beyond saying this :
That's the game that makes me feel the best playing it, and the other titles pale in comparison.
I'm not gonna argue it has the best game-play, I don't think it does. Nor am I going to argue it's the best written of them. I don't think that either.
It's simply the game that resonates the most with my personal taste in design, writing and art-direction.

It resonates with me the same way the Battle Arena Toshinden series does. That's my favorite fighting series, regardless of how much more polished or impressive new iterations of Tekken and Street Fighter are.

FF-fucking-V? Now they're just being contrary. What's the theme of FFV? Oh, it doesn't have one? Interesting. What about the setting? Such memorable locations as... poison mountain? Uhm... castle... crystal? There was that big bridge! What was it called? The Big Bridge, you say? Hm.

As for all the love XII is getting... an FF usually has to gestate for ~10 yrs before having its moment. It was only around 2003 that people started saying VI was the best ever, and IX (previously the dark horse) became the popular-alternative FF around 2009. The only exception I can think of is VII, which has experienced the inverse. Number six. Pah!
