Well soda is a contentious term in the US alone as well. On the east coast we'll call any of those sweet carbonated drinks (Coca-Cola, et. al.) "soda." In the Midwest they'll call it "pop." In the South they refer to all of it as "Coke" for maximum confusion.
What I'm less sure about is if just regular carbonated water, sometimes called seltzer, is still just referred to as "soda" or "club soda" everywhere, regardless of what you call the sweetened drinks. Not sure.
I would guess that your best option to emulate "vodka and lemonade" in the UK in North America would be to just get it with Sprite. I know it's not exactly the same, but it might be close enough in flavor.
EDIT@Red: Yeah, I remember being asked "Mineral or still?" by a waittress with a thick accent in England was also a difficult time for 15 year-old-me
