I'm off to North America, bai

Well soda is a contentious term in the US alone as well. On the east coast we'll call any of those sweet carbonated drinks (Coca-Cola, et. al.) "soda." In the Midwest they'll call it "pop." In the South they refer to all of it as "Coke" for maximum confusion.

What I'm less sure about is if just regular carbonated water, sometimes called seltzer, is still just referred to as "soda" or "club soda" everywhere, regardless of what you call the sweetened drinks. Not sure.

I would guess that your best option to emulate "vodka and lemonade" in the UK in North America would be to just get it with Sprite. I know it's not exactly the same, but it might be close enough in flavor.

EDIT@Red: Yeah, I remember being asked "Mineral or still?" by a waittress with a thick accent in England was also a difficult time for 15 year-old-me :monster:

We don't do the "mineral" thing in Scotland, mineral water here is "still" water XD. Soda water is the fizzy kind (and I'm opposed to its existence). Actually, soda water is also called "tonic".

You're right about the Sprite Force, that's the closest thing I can think to lemonade. Why didn't I think of that at the bar XD. 7Up might actually be closer.

Mm, good call, probably.

I actually learned recently that tonic is different than soda. At least, here. Tonic has quinine and has calories, whereas soda does not. (Gin and tonic is like 190 calories, gin and soda is only ~90 from the gin.) And, yes, "Calories" are another thing, we just get it with a capitalized "C" to stand in for kcals. lol

Old people call soda 'pop' but I think most people are just specific about whatever it is, coke, lemonade, ginger ale etc

Except for 'Cream Soda' which is utterly fucking repugnant in my opinion.

Yeah, mineral water here is regular water with minerals like calcium etc. (still being without) - sparkling is the word used for fizzy/carbonated/soda water, for the most part.

But there would be the older generations (my grandad being the first to initiate my confusion) who go a step further and would ask if I'd like "a glass of minerals" (word for word) - and it wouldn't matter what it was; it was whatever fizzy/sparkling/soda flavoured drink that was on hand :D

Ah, it's not bad at the right moment, but it's certainly no cloudy lemonade.

Anyway, not sure if I've said it yet but I'm glad you had a good time abroad, Lex xD

Yeah, can't say I'm a fan of that stuff either.

Honestly, until alcohol I was pretty boring with beverage choices. Pretty much just water for me. Don't really care for most sodas, coffee, tea, root beer, milk, juices. (There are a few exceptions in those categories, but very few.) It was probably one way in which I was inadvertently healthy. Until beer and booze came along :monster:

I knew there was a reason I find you awesome. :monster:

Another thing that is fucking gross, 'Ice cream float' a fuckin spoonful of ice cream in lemonade. Demented. and then it goes all scummy and sticks to the sides of the glass. It's something my dad does, and the other day my dad turned up at my house with some sandwiches he'd made for himself in a (unused!) dog poo bag. It was a scented dog poo bag too. I have no idea if transferred to the sandwiches. So liek thats the calibre of human being who thinks Ice cream in lemonade is a good idea.

Also Dandelion and Burdock, which is also disgusting like something left over from the war when we couldn't get anything nice to drink.

I believe an ice cream float here is in root beer. But it's not something I've ever ordered so I can't say with certainty.

...I call it pop..............

But I write 'soda' when talking online.

Also, vanilla ice cream in root beer is tasty. <3 I used to have it with Big Red too. :monster:

Not too long ago I bought one of those, except it was coffee instead of lemonade. Not a fan of how this "coffee ice cream float" was made. Didn't help that the coffee itself tasted poorly. :monster:

It's not actual beer, it's a soda, though there are some alcoholic ones out there. It's a pretty sweet soda, Sweeter than pepsi or coke. I was really fond of it as a child and now I think I like pepsi more.

I think it's supposed to be made with sassafras root or something? Iunno, never cared for it. But I could imagine it goes with ice cream better than freaking lemonade, though. Even the British kind.

If you're doing the weird ice cream + fizzy juice thing, Irn Bru is the only way to go. It's delicious.
