Infiltrating Shinra - TLS interview project

Edit :
Also, if it's not too late I could fry to get my spiky ass to Jump Festa, but I'd have to look into that when I get home. Besides, I'm dirt poor at the moment so depending on ticket price etc. it might not be feasible this time around. Also, we don't even know if FFVII will make an appearance in eifher case...
I'd be willing to help financially either with this or with the interview you proposed in your original post.

Even if nothing happens with this interview idea, it comes to mind that hian deserves some monetary reward for his translation assistance. Be it now or later I will definitely show my support to hian, especially if he continues to provide his services. =)

Questions to Square...

Q: In the remake trailers we have seen a redesign of the Buster Sword, where the hilt has bolts and grey metal. What happened to the gold hilt with the wing pattern, seen in the Compilation? Does it still exist beneath the new hilt? (Not sure if "hilt" is the correct word, but you know what I'm getting at)

Q: With G-Bike being removed from mobile services, can we expect to see a near-identical version of the minigame pop in the remake or will the minigame be completely different from its mobile counterpart?

Q: Will every line in the game be voiced (like I think they did for Lightning Returns?) or will voiced lines be reserved for cutscenes?

Q: Barret's new shades look cool! Will the player be able to equip and unequip Barret's shades at will? If yes, can we expect to see characters changing outfits and accessories as the player changes their equipment?

Q: When the original FFVII was still being made, the concept for Honey Bee Inn was way more adult and risque than what ended up in the final product. Will the remake gear more towards these unused concepts, the original game's depiction or something completely different?

Unfortunately I can't come up with sneaky questions with answers that could imply a lot of juicy stuff but the above are at the very least things I'm curious about.

@Shademp : Thank you for the kind words (that goes for everyone), but I'll be up front and say I could never consider accepting any monetary rewards for what little I've done and probably not for similar stuff in the future either.
A.) because my translations are late they rarely reveal much new stuff.
B.) they cost me nothing to make, and
C.) I would have done them anyways for my own sake

The only reason I brought this up was to cover my ass in case this generated traction, passed through, and then I stood there neck-deep in promises I wouldn't be able to keep due to travel expenses because I literally live on around 1000 yen a day at most these days.

If I'm ever given the chance or called upon to do some actual leg-work, not from behind a computer, then I'd be glad for the support. However, just from stuff I do on my computer befofe going to bed? Nah, that would make me feel like a cheat.

As for the interview, I've decided I'll just do the request straight up, send the Japanese press department my request and make it on the behalf of this community (just hoping staff here will back me if SE Japan contacts you for verification) and see how it goes.

I'm also working on an in-depth analysis video of the two interviews I translated (reading both the original Japanese and my translation mixed with notes, theories and conclusions that can be drawn from the statements), which will of course contain a "clearing common miscnceptions" dealing with a lot of the weird stuff that public commentators have said, or things they've just gotten wrong since the release of the game-play trailer. Please be excited and all that.

Oh for the record Hian if you need anything from me to actually make this happen just let me know, I'm just not clear on how I can be of assistance. If they need to contact the site to verify you then obviously we'll do that without question.

Probably something like that, at most.

One thing I did think of just now though, is that if this site has its own email, then I could simply provide you the script for the request, and the file with the questions when finalized, and then you or whomever controls the mail account could send the mail.

This way the request would be coming directly from the site, instead of from my gmail, which probably would look far better =P

Also super thanks for the support. I don't have much faith that I'll be able to pull this off, but hey, why not try? It's not like it's going to cost us anything to ask.

@the rest of you people -
Got some really good ideas here.
I especially liked the ones in regards to appearance changing equipment because it can tie together with the question about the Buster Sword.

Asking something along the lines of :

"We've noticed Barret's redesign, prominent in it the inclusion of shades, and so we're curious to know whether this is a permanent change or some sort of equip-able item, and if so, if there will be other items like this?"

Getting a simple yes or no to this question would give us a lot to go on really.

I also think it's worth time asking what they're feelings are on things that were cut from the original and whether or not they plan on implementing ideas that didn't make it the first time around.

Some of the questions asked are a bit specific. We probably shouldn't aim for too many, and so it's important that the few we get to ask, if any, are questions that are really worth it.

The question about the "redesign" of Cloud's sword I'm not sure about simply because this is a remake of the original, not of the compilation, and the design from the compilation is a redesign that is different from the original sword after all.
The likeliest answer we're getting to that question is simply that this is what the original Buster Sword looked like, and the remake isn't a compilation product.
Now there could be an interesting story behind choice to revert to the original design, but would you sacrifice a question slot for that answer is my question to you people I guess.
If people echo the sentiment though, it should definitely be on the list.
At least, that's how I plan on shaping this interview.

On the topic of female Cloud -
It would be priceless if the costume Cloud wears essentially makes him look like Lightning, complete with a dress version of her original costume - just, "yeah, we went there lol"
Based on how faithful the opening is though, I wouldn't be surprised if female Cloud looked much like the original, with a dress in the same horrid color as his SOLDIER uniform, complete with the spiky wig - which of course, would be awesome =P

I'm interested in how the rationalize it this way around though - because logically speaking, there is no reason why Cloud, who's strength is legendary by that point in time, should have to dress up to sneak past a few thugs when he could literally just waltz in there and beat everyone to a pulp.
I mean, you could run in the front entrance of Shinra HQ for god's sake - why would Don Corneo's mansion be any different?

Presumably he's concerned that if he can't find Tifa right away she might be offed. Furthermore her cover could be blown since Corneo knows enough about AVALANCHE to be an informant. And, most importantly, though he doesn't understand this is Tifa's plan, they would lose the opportunity to interrogate him if things went awry.

Cloud's strength may be legendary, but if he has to bail from a squad of roughly 8 Shinra soldiers, it's safe to assume he knows discretion is the better part of valor.

Still it would be interesting if they added some stealth mechanic into it, like you can't let people realize you're a dude too soon or something like that.

Oh god... think of the voice acting.

THINK OF THE FALSETTO.

Or it's just another part of the original's inconsistent writing. I mean, I think we can safely assume that running in the front door of Shinra HQ would bring out more than 8 soldier. Also the bike chase, also Cloud and Co fighting weapons at the size of Godzilla =P

I'm pretty sure they just didn't care all that much and thought the scenario was funny and awesome, and put it in there for those reasons.

Still it would be interesting if they added some stealth mechanic into it, like you can't let people realize you're a dude too soon or something like that.

In the original Cloud avoided talking when he entered the mansion.

Stealth mechanics? Just got this horrible/awesome mental image of Hitman's agent 47 wearing a spiky wig and dress, with all the NPCs staring suspiciously at him and the alert meter drawing extremely close to its end.
Yeah, SE, do that.

You know what I'm the most curious about right now after thinking it over...I highly doubt they'll touch on this subject because it's way too specific and spoilerific:

The scene at the Temple of the Ancients where
Cloud beats the holy mother out of Aerith
. That weren't no ordinary slap. :monster:

I do wonder how they'll handle that, but...I suppose that falls into the "is it T for teen?" category.

See that is what is odd/interesting here. The Remake version of the Buster Sword is a combination of the original design (bolted grey hilt) and the Compilation design (decorative lines on the blade itself). A question I could derive from this observation could be something like...

Q: Cloud's Buster Sword looks like a combination between its original design and the Compilation design. Does this represent a marriage between the original game and the Compilation, a reboot of the Compilation or is something completely different going on here?

I don't know if the above question is broad enough to qualify. I do agree that avoiding too specific questions should be the focus.

Shademp, that's actually a pretty interesting question.

Personally, I see what we have so far to be a clear indication of the compilation either not making it, or being reworked to fit better with the original story for one very specific reason - their response to the question about whether the game would tie in with the compilation in the Dengeki interview.

Nomura and Kitase completely avoid the part of the question that deals with the compilation.
In Japanese culture, in contexts like these, giving a wishy-washy non-answer to a pretty straight forward question tends to be an answer that leans towards the negative or something else entirely.
Japanese tend not to like to give direct negative responses, and would rather that people pick up on that themselves so as to not create confrontations.

Another thing here is that both Nomura and Kitase go on about making story changes without mentioning the compilation. This makes little sense.
There is very little point to keeping this secret or vague (in fact one could argue that making this clear could generate a lot of hype from the new generation of fans that joined the FFVII fan-train after AC).
They certainly aren't looking to avoid a controversy, because saying that they plan to make changes to the story is in and of itself controversial, as is showing of game-play of a completely altered battle-system - perhaps more so than saying that you're going to make tie-ins to the compilation.

Finally, the way they speak of making changes and the reasons for doing so, would be just as applicable to the compilation as the original - after all, fans have played/watched/read the compilation as well, so even if they were to extend the universe of the original in the direction of the compilation there is no reason why they wouldn't make changes to the compilation too.

Anyways - a small update -

JUMP FESTA SE line-up has been updated today to include FF7 remake :
http://www.jp.square-enix.com/jf16/

JUMP FESTA has free entry. However, I'm kinda torn on whether or not to go since A.) I'm dirt poor, and B.) it's probably just going to be the official Japanese screening of the PSX trailer (the spot only lists a trailer, not a stage event)
I can't imagine they'd have a new trailer out this fast.

It seems like there is gold glinting out from underneath it, but until confirmed it's just a theory.

The compilation gold design wouldn't fit underneath that thing, it's smaller than that. Taking a closer look at the sword in the new trailer also makes it seem like that is not the case.

Thanks. I'll think some more on it, as it isn't until next weekend, and since the entrance is free I don't have to worry about not getting in if I'm early in line on the actual day it opens.

Anyone here actually think SE would drop another trailer on us this soon? :loopy:

As for the sword thing - I really can't see how Cloud would have the time, means or need to refit the guard of his sword, since A.) he wouldn't have had any money coming into Midgar B.) he was found by Tifa clutching the same Buster Sword that he took from Zack, and he pretty much went straight on to the mission with Barret after that it would seem and C.) he would have no reason to hide the original guard in either case.

The compilation redesign was probably done because they thought it looked cool and fit the new look of the compilation products. Now they're going back to the roots and perhaps looking for a more dark and drab look so they reverted to the original design because it better fits the feel of this game.

The compilation was very swirly looking. Swirls everywhere. Even Bahamut's head was swirly. I like the simplistic nail-head look of the original. Less swirlies. Don't know if "swirly" is the right word but I like typing it. :awesome:

There was some debate on whether it would or wouldn't, and I very much didn't agree with the presented argument. It'd be interesting to re-look at it again with the more recent footage.

Well, seeing how simple the new design of the guard looks in the Remake, it's possible that Cloud didn't even have to buy anything, just used some scrap metal to make the new guard fit over the gold. He could've done this after Tifa found him and before they did the mission. Or, this is a redesign of the sword and in the Remake the gold part has mostly been taken out.
It does look like the gold is still there on the bottom, as the design right below the square metal guard curves instead of jutting out at an angle, suggestion there could be the old, more-rounded design underneath:

Also, if your slightly cracked out old friend shows up in town, I think that there is at least a little down time and or prep time before you convince him that you'll pay him to go off on a mission as a mercenary to blow up a reactor. Especially when he looks mostly like a SOLDIER still with identifying features. I don't think it's unreasonable that the timeline allows for a little of this, especially in the Remake.

The argument is that it's too small. Which it is. Drawing random lines over it doesn't really change that fact. :P

My point was that dawing a line over it didn't prove it was too small though, because it made an incorrect assumption about placement. The lines aren't just random. The "hilt" of the Remake Buster Sword is WAY wider than the gold trim of the Crisis Core version.

EDIT: I'll just make a topic for it so as not to derail this thread.

UPDATE :

I've pretty much decided on the question I want to go with, but I think I have room for one more (10 is a nice round number).
Don't mind the spelling mistakes, the formatting, and the staccato wording of the questions - I haven't bothered to check for the former and I've done the latter on purpose because they're all going to be written and asked in Japanese anyways, and I was thinking partly in Japanese when writing them in order to save me time when finalizing the interview.

I'm thinking you guys can help me with some feed-back and a last question, then I'll translate everything into proper Japanese (which should take me an evening or two), write up the mail asking for the interview (have my wife proof-read everything), and then I'll post the finished product here and also PM it to Lex, or whomever else has access to this sites official email (I'm hoping you have one?), so it can be sent through a proper channel.
That is, of course, if you guys are still on board with this.

We're in February now, things have died down, and there are no immediate press releases or announcements on the horizon, which means that we've now escaped the window where we're most likely to be referred off to the next conference for the generic official statements.

I.E Let's mosey!

So here's the fluff (I will also post it in the OP so it doesn't get buried when and if the thread grows) -

Size and format

Question 1 :

One big thing when talking about the remake, both now and in the past, has been in relation to scope.
Scope was brought up when talking about the remake in the past, and was brought up again with the announcement that the remake would be split into parts.
Now, SE is working on another game which looks like it has quite the scope - namely FFVX - and so I want to ask if we're looking at something similar to that, or perhaps even bigger?

Question 2 :

Although you have probably stated all you can about FFVII:R being split into several parts, a lot of the media abroad has run with the term "episodic" in talking about your decision.
I'm sensing a distinction between the term "episodic" in Japanese, and "segmented", which you chose when speaking about the remake.
Would it perhaps be more accurate to say that the remake will be more similar to the FFXIII trilogy, than say, "Life is Strange" or other episodic games from SE?

Question 3 :

With FFVII:R becoming a "bunsaku"(split product) are there any particular problems or hurdles you anticipate in regards to things such as where and how to split up the story and the world?

Question 4 :

Many western fans are worried about if and how the direction of recent FF titles will effect the remake.
Newer titles have tended to be more stream-lined and offered less in terms of exploration. FFXIII stands out in particular as a game many western fans would not want the remake to emulate.
If you could compare the vision for the remake with other FF titles like FFVX, FF Type-0 or FFXIII, is there any particular one that stands out?

Game-play specifics :

Question 5 :

The original game had quite a lot of content to it in addition to the size of the world.
In terms of the character's equipment, the character's look would change with new weapons, and there were many different modes of travel, enemy types etc.
Is it a priority to keep such things in the remake?

Question 6 :

In earlier interviews it was stated that you're focusing on how the characters can interact with the environment. In the trailer we saw Cloud moving through rubble in a way similar to that of how movement works in FFXV.
FFXV features elements of free-running and recently revealed magic that has an effect on the environment.
And in the Dissidia games there were destructable parts of the environment, and you had the ability to run on walls among other things.
Are we looking at something similar for the remake?

Question 7 :

When talking about the combat mechanics in earlier interviews, comparisons were made to the new Dissidia game and Kingdom Hearts.
More than those games though, I think it would be natural to ask how the remake will compare to the latest action based RPGs in the FF franchise - FFXV and FF Type-0.
Are these games any indication of the direction the Remake is going in?

Style and Story :

Question 8 :

It has been stated that the remake will feature changes to the story, and that it will also tie in with the compilation.
However, western fans have taken notice that the intro featured in the trailer for the remake is different from the intro featured in the compilation title CC of Cloud riding the train - specifically in regards to the design of his sword.
Does this mean that we can expect changes to story aspects from the compilation as well?
In light of that, Is it perhaps reasonable to view the remake more akin to that of a reboot?

Question 9 :

One thing many western fans are very interested in is the music from the original game.
Uematsu has stated that he will not be coming back for the remake, and in the trailers you've used music from, among other things, the compilation.
Does this mean that we're looking at an entirely remastered soundtrack, and if so, have you decided who will do the job?

These are definitely all questions we're dying to know the answers to. You might as well go for broke and throw in one final, longshot question you won't expect a response to, though, even if the rest do get one. Who knows, maybe you'll get something.

I just don't know what question that should be. :monster:

Maybe something like "If the remake is received well, can we expect a remake of Before Crisis or a follow-up to Dirge of Cerberus?"

I'd really like to see him answer "Is there anything about the Compilation that you regret?" but I can't imagine Japanese social custom would consider that acceptable.

I was actually thinking about ending the interview by asking that with the remake making FFVII and the compilation more relevant again, if we can expect the less accessible compilation products such as CC and DoC to be made available again, perhaps through digital download for the PS Vita, PS 4 etc. since the former is capable of emulating CC and the latter is capable of emulating DoC.

As for regrets about the compilation - I was hoping the question about the tie-in might broach the subject somewhat, because if any of them answer along the line of "Yeah, we'll be making changes there as well, because some of it just doesn't work very well with the original plot" or something to that effect, I think we can safely assume that upon later examination they found that they perhaps weren't all that satisfied with it.
Who knows?

I'm just hoping that if the interview gets green-lit, that I'll get a chance to ask the questions in person, rather than just through e-mail correspondence, because that way (unless I get bombarded with limitations by some secretary before the interview) I can gauge the reactions and responses I get, and perhaps branch out and probe them a bit as they answer.

Also, know that if I do get it green-lit for a personal interview, I'll endeavor to bring a camera, and document the entire thing.
Maybe make a nice youtube video, and film myself riding the train into Tokyo with the FFVII intro track running in the background lolololol.
