I don't mind either.
If people want a straight boardgame movie like Jumanji , why not watch Zathura and realize how useless (albeit a guilty pleasure of mine) it is to have another one when Jumanji already exists.
Fact of the matter is they knocked it out of the ball park and made possibly the best movie possible for this type of film on the first try lol.
I think it's neat they are modernizing it and moving the setting to the jungle. Let's not forget that the same thing happened to Allan in the first Jumanji, instead of just skipping over it and going 30 years in the future we get to see what it's like in the jungle for the first time.
I will agree though that this will likely not have "heart" like the original did. It hit that tone so well , it was almost somber maybe even melancholic. Alan and Sarah's lives were ruined, the kids parents are dead. Heck even shoe cops career was wrecked... twice.
And yet they still managed to fit that sort of tone into a great adventure in a natural way and fixed it in a way that imo didn't feel bull shit deus ex machina either.
Given the setting and characters I don't really see a way for that same sort of story to really even be possible. Much less be fleshed out properly.
That said I do like the arch type reversals they have going on and honestly I think this is the first time I'll be able to see Kevin Hart play Kevin Hart on the screen it actually be a natural fit. Jock/bully character with huge ego stuck in the wrong , way shorter body? Yup that would be Kevin Hart lol.
It's an odd one for me. If you were to describe this movie to me plainly like "It's about a bunch of kids playing a game and get stuck dealing with a bunch of jungle shit" , I'd be like "So Jumanji?" . On the other hand even though I'm ok with it using the branding I do think it damages it over all.
