Kefka and Celes

I saw an interesting comment on-line somewhere, and while it had never occurred to me before, it makes sense.

Consider that, according to the debated backstory for Kefka, Celes was his protege within the Empire before he cracked. Now, the source of that backstory is up for questioning, but what happens in the game isn't. When the Returners arrive at the Floating Continent, Kefka is fairly willing to stand back, let Gestahl incapacitate the party and tempt Celes back to them. Then, Celes turns and stabs Kefka, and he throws a fit.

Now, what I ask is, was Kefka's plan *always* to eventually overthrow Gestahl and take over the Statues, or did Celes' attack drive him over the edge? As I read someone else saying, Kefka was content to rule the world with Celes and Gestahl so he doesn't do anything, until the rebellion of his student against him sent him off the deep end....well, deep-er end for Kefka, that is. Celes' attack and the sight of his own blood were the last straws, and then Kefka overthrows Gestahl, kicks Celes aside and claims the power of the Statues for himself.

So yeah, was Kefka always just biding his time to overthrow Gestahl, or did Celes' attack set him off? I'm not sure I agree, but all things considered it's plausible.

Playing the game over and over, I always thought Celes had a large impact. That's why I thought in Dissidia, she'd be included instead of Terra. I felt she had more of a conflict with Kefka, and had a deeper connection to him than Terra did. <=/ Sure, Terra is the main heroine and everything... but Celes is the damn general. Celes is the one with all this shit with Kefka, and is actually... a much better developed character than Terra was. Anyway, I always thought that Celes being his breaking point was obvious.

I wonder why Kefka didn't seem to care too much about breeding a superhuman race with Celes...

*waggles eyebrows* hmmmm...

I was advocating possible Kefka/Celes, personally, which is a disturbing pairing in of itself. :monster:

I believe she was being facetious.

EDIT:

Yeah I'm late so what wanna fight about it?
You're late? You haven't been with Kefka lately have you? :O Uh oh.

Any Kefka pairing IS disturbing, btw.

Anyway. Celes was definitely the breaking point for Kefka. My opinion is that, if she had not intervened like that, he still would have snapped at some point in the near future. You see how his personality is throughout the game, plotting and making crazy decisions, such as with Doma and Leo. So I think him overthrowing Gestahl and unbalancing the Statues was pretty inevitable.

If I'm not mistaken, JoKerfka said something about taking over the Warring Triad's power, in the Esper Research Facility. It's in FFVI Advanced, if I record correctly.

Yeah I agree. I mean...unbalancing the statues was sort of a right-place/right-time thing, but the way things were going, I'm not sure how long Kefka would have been able to be a right-hand man. He was simply too rash, and Celes set things in motion that would have done so sooner or later.

Also, I apologize if this is a stupid question, I haven't played VI in a long time. When Gestahl imprisons Kefka and pretends to want to end the war. Was imprisoning Kefka part of that facade or was he serious about that because of Kefka being batshit?

I don't remember very well, but i think that Kefka, in Thamasa, states that it was all a plot to gain the Returners' trust.

Kefka was definitely going to snap sooner or later. The interesting thing about his character is that he has no 'grand plan'. Sure, he has aspirations, but he makes his decisions at the spur of the moment. He may have decided to do what he did when he did it because of Celes, but Gestahl was on borrowed time either way.

No, it was also part of the plan, to distract the Returners who were busy looking for the Espers, while Kefka ran amok sucking up those same Espers for Magicite.

It's all a trick for them to get to the Statues. It makes me wonder if they were plotting to get Leo all along, or if that was just Kefka.

Found a quote from the game script-
Setzer: We've been had! The emperor is a liar! It was all a trap.
Cyan: Thanks to King Edgar, we managed to escape before the trap was
sprung.
Locke: Good work, Edgar!
Edgar: The lady who brought us tea tipped me of to the whole crooked plot...
I'd barely finished exchanging pleasantries with her when she just
blurted it out!
