I think the thing I liked most about this film is that it doesn't at any point insult the viewer's intelligence. So many films these days seem to be made as though the viewer has the intelligence and attention span of a proverbial goldfish (in reality, goldfish have better memories than they're reputed to, but I digress). This film provided most of its characterisation and world building through entirely visual means and trusted that the viewer would be intelligent enough to catch up.

There are several great examples of this in the first ten minutes. The opening scene gives us Max standing on top of a mountain with a two-headed lizard behind him. The two-headed lizard immediately indicates to us that there is something drastically wrong with the world that has caused mutations in wildlife. Immediately following this the lizard scuttles towards Max and, without even looking at it, he steps on it, picks it up, and eats it. This conveys to us both how extraordinary Max's reflexes are and what a desolate place this world must be that eating a mutated lizard is perceived as necessary. All this without a single word of dialogue spoken.

The film continues along these lines for most of the film. There is dialogue, but it's minimal. The shots of the Citadel reveal to us, without beating us over the head with the fact, that the people are effectively slaves of Immortan Joe and that the women in particular are treated abysmally. Similarly, Max and Furiosa start out not trusting each other, and their development into an effective team with mutual trust is accomplished almost entirely non-verbally. And I could go on.

In short, the film adheres to a solid but often forgotten piece of advice for storytelling: "Show, don't tell". Miller said he wanted to make a film that "could be understood in Tokyo without the subtitles". I'd say he succeeded. I can easily see this film leading to a sea change in the way films are made in the future, and I hope it does.

I've also heard a number of people bitch that Max was barely in this film. I'm sorry, but did those people watch the same movie I did? He was onscreen in nearly every scene. The arguments that he didn't have much effect on the plot are also balderdash; it's his idea to
turn the procession around to the undefended Citadel
, and he accomplishes a rather large number of badass feats singlehandedly (including one offscreen which is just about the best use of the "Offscreen Moment of Awesome" trope I've ever seen in a film). The one thing I can concede is that he didn't talk much. But then, he didn't talk much in the first two films either, so it's not like this should have been a shock to anyone.

I'd be hard-pressed to name a flaw in this film and I may end up wanting to see it again before it leaves theatres. It just wouldn't be the same on the small screen.

Great Old One
I'm halfway into this film and I hope it picks up because so far it's been a mix of cheesy, seen-it-before, pretty, and meh. As in, ugh here comes more 'gritty porn' - what I enjoyed about the universe of America 3000 (funny and dated as that movie is) is that the breeders were kept and protected by the women themselves. Supermodel breeders kept by men is a bit too much 'glossy rape' for my taste.

Oh, and Max's comic relief lines during the first 30 minutes just doesn't fit the film _at all_.

That is just so squee :joy:

Dark Nation

Melodramatic much..
Just finished watching Fury Road.

Right I'll get the grievance out of the road first.

A bit pissed that there was a lack of Double barrel and V8 interceptor action but they'll happily throw in a fuckin guitarist to turn the film into a music video that looked like it belonged to wanky trailer trash band five finger death punch..Why they had to go over the top with that I've no idea but whatever its a minor blip that is easy enough to pretend never happened. I did however perform a full facepalm whenever that twat got screen time.

Some of the action was cartoonish as was some of the deaths.

However,

The last 20 minutes was spine tingling as THAT!

WAS MADMAX!

That's the Max I know.

As for this :quote: Feminist :quote: pish that I've read about..

Utter bollox.

There wasn't a single feminist vibe to that film, unless you somehow think women escaping from a human dairy factory is out of order and threatens your ego.

Like I say the last 20 minutes was tight but some of the film was uncalled for.. I mean whats up with the Castle grey scull HQ ? The previous Max's have put a focus on resources being scarce and precious , dog eat dog and all that shit..but they've time to carve a skull on the side of a mountain.

The intro btw was nice. Had a real Max feel to it.. I just about pissed myself when he eat the lizard... that's right up there with eating your dogs , dog food. We get a little squirt of the V8 and then... yeah, waited the best part of 70/80 minutes for it to crank up.

Good film though just a tad slap stick.

6/10

ps, I like the mentally unstable side of Max.. that was nice..as was the bolt save...cute.

"Shelia" <-- I wonder if that's supposed to be Sheila. Given Mad Max has connections with Australia and women are colloquially called Sheila here, despite the fact I've only ever known one person named Sheila in my life :P.
