On feedback, I quite like the style of the CC showroom thingy (the top half of your comparison), its style matches that of AC and whatnot, whereas the others (both yours and FFVII's) have a much more clean style. I'd go for gritty and grey, add some effects and some slight normal mapping for some of the detailing.

Yeah I've been starting to go that way with textures as the flamboyantly bright colour schemes of FF7 just don't look right when compared to the more realistic styles of AC/CC. (also I do like the normalmapping, which is used on the mako reactors, but I'm gonna have to wait till the very end before playing with that due to ridiculous render times on this >_<)

oh and in response to Bonaventura, it varies a lot so I'm not exactly sure, only thing i remember a timeframe with is that the base mesh of the 7th heaven took me one evening (everything else is all over the place)

Holy crap this is fucking amazing. What program(s) do you use?

(Also, can this be moved to the art & writing forum? >.> )

Okay everyone, I'm in need of some opinions.
The original layout for great justice, but with the color schemes and textures of AC/CC/DoC renders. Having that realistic touch to the old and familiar would just be the spiffiest thing ever.

I'm also the RavynneNevyrmore that is now watching you on DA, but I didn't want to be redundant there.

Thanks! I use Autodesk Maya 2008 (now 2009) for modeling and photoshop for making textures.

Ah yes I've seen a person by that name watching my dA, good to seen another board member on there!

Ok all, updates are probably gonna be few and far between in the coming months since I've got cosplays to make for a convetion in April and one really hard costume I'm taking with me to San Diego Comic Con in July and those are pretty much eating up all my time.

In the meantime, recently I had to make a model of the Q1 Residential tower near where I live on the Gold Coast for a project at work, and since this tower is massive I decided to import it into Midgar and see how it fairs against the Shin-Ra building from plate level, and as you can see Shin-Ra HQ won...

For reference Q1 is 322.5 m (1058 ft) tall to the top of the spire and has a roof height of 275 m (900 ft).
Tho note that I made my Midgar roughly between the sizes of the Original FF7 one and the much larger AC/Compilation one.

So Midgar is serious busniess!

Amazing. What disease created the delirium to take on such an ambitious project? With your intimate knowledge of the city now, is it a smaller place than you imagined when you first played the game?

Thanks, and well, I guess i just started it cause I've always been fascinated by it and also AC just came out back then, first it was just gonna be the Shin-Ra building then i just kept adding more and more and there's Midgar XD.

And I wouldn't say that modeling this has made the city seem smaller, if anything its made me truly understand how massive it is. One thing I'll note that really stands out from the game is the slums. In FF7 those used to feel really closed in and dark, like they were completely sealed off from the outside, but now I can see far out into the distance and it makes them feel more open (Same as when you're in them in Crisis Core)

Well you're crazy - but I'm glad you are. Some impressive and detailed work there. Midgar is a fascinating and compelling design. I'll keep my eye on thread!

Yes I have, back on the old ACF thread I posted WIP's of The turks, Aerith, Shelke, Scarlet, Shin-Ra Mp's, Female WRO Soldier and Sephiroth (Also had some early work done on Yuffie but didnt show it). Tho I'm not actualy happy with a lot of the ways they've been modeled and they're all pretty much gonna go through a massive overhaul when I get back to them. Don't know when that'll be but when I do you can be sure I'll show them here.

That looks so awesome. I can't wait to see your DG additions.

But I seriously have no idea how there could be a town and building and shit below Midgar...

Do you know how deep in the ground that'd have to be? And what about oxygen? How do they even BREATHE down there? Where's the ventilation?

Yeah i got no idea why a city is down there either, unless someone transported it there using Alchemy :monster:

Alternatly, It could have always orignaly been some kind of ShinRa contingency plan, where like if shit happened on the surface they could retreat there, and used as a medical facility until needed but then ends up as deepground.

Lol, and you make a good point about the air, they would have to have some serious venting going on cause I can't see anyone living in a geofront with a big 'ol Reactor spewing fumes 24/7 XD

It would need to be around 100 ft down min to account for the reactor, the ventilation could similarly be handled by cycling air via upward ducts, and at the reactor if nowhere else.

And yes, it's probably an emergency scenario shelter.

That probably would make the most sense, my best assumption is that the green fire-like mako emitting from all around the base of Shin-Ra HQ is meant to be coming from Reactor 0 since there's no where elese that stuff could be coming from. Tho then leaves the question of if Reactor 0 is still going after meteorfall, then the green stuff should still be there and smoke should still be coming out somewhere, otherwise that means the reactor is no longer venting...

(Hmmm...I'm wondering if this deepground discussion should continue in the Dirge section)

Always great to see updates. Also always fun to debate this stuff (Reactor 0, "green fire-y mako stuff", etc), and wonder if SE ever thought of reasons for what we see, or if it was just all pretty visual stuff that'll never have a good explanation.
