There are guns in Tactics and FFXII, which are both unquestionably medieval.

But yes, Spira is more advanced then it lets on.

Good point, I think it's mainly the setting though that determines whether or not an RPG is modern or medieval. FF really makes you question the difference between modern and medieval RPGs.

In terms of settings, I like both as long as the world is interesting. I suppose for RPGs the high fantasy/medieval setting is more at risk of being tiresome if it doesn't have an interesting spin on things, but lots of my favorite RPG worlds fall into the more "medieval" category: FFIX, FFXII/FFT/Vagrant Story (Ivalice in general, I guess), Baten Kaitos, and Skies of Arcadia (but even though Skies has a lot of magic, it's not really high fantasy given the historical time period it's based on). I've got favorites with modern settings, too (SMT: Nocturne and TWEWY). So I don't think I have a particular preference - it's more how unique and appealing the atmosphere/world of the game is.

Somewhat relatedly, though, I just want to say how much Star Ocean 3 faked me out. I was expecting some futuristic sci-fi type stuff and probably 75% of the game was spent on an obnoxiously generically-medieval planet. :monster:

Although this made me wonder what would a futuristic Legend of Zelda look like.

Zelda with space ships and lasers and whatnot would weird me out as much as Link talking. I'm still coming to terms with the train in Spirit Tracks. :monster:

Agreed so hard. I remember being pretty annoyed that the game used it's plagiarized prime directive and constant crashlandings as an excuse to just make another medieval rpg.
