Searched for a similar thread but didn't find anything, so I'm here to ask - what character deaths left you the most bereft/sad/in awe/etc in video games?

Please use spoilers with the appropriate game names in them so people know which ones to not read :D

Oh man, Mordin. Oh Mordin. Mordin Mordin Mordin... Dudes, I was so sad when died. Impressed too, 'cause he was so damn badass in that whole scene, and in the games.

Thane also bummed me the hell out, but at least I was expecting it, and he had a damn good run.

Talking about LoD in the CC thread is what reminded me of this and made me want to make this thread. Lavitz was on of my absolute favourite characters in anything ever. EVER. His death has stayed with me longer than any other, and I still get sad 14 years after first seeing that scene. That man was the ultimate gentleman, and the ultimate back-having bro. And then he died to save his king. So awesome!

Axel. I mean, sure he was kind of your enemy, but he was also kind of your friend, and when you find out his whole backstory and realise how sad it is and then just as he gets a bit of a chance he dies? WTH man... No fair. He was one of my favourite characters from the game!

That's all I got for now. Those are the three most emotionally impacting video game deaths I have experienced (iirc), particularly #2. I mean, there may be others that I remember that beat out #1 and #3, but #2.... Oh man, I was bummed for days. I couldn't even play on for like a week after that happened.

So whatchu got?

Ooh, you are right. *shameface*

He beats out #3. And part 2 of #1. But not part 1 of #1. No way. Though he did make want to cry like a little little girl....

The Super Metroid itself. Everything about the final battle and the leadup to it was executed perfectly

What happened to the spoiler tags? :P

I know everyone here already knows about his death, but because I'm stupid and know so little about the compilation, I didn't actually know that it would be shown in Crisis Core until I read about it here. Now it won't be a shock for me when I eventually play it.

(I almost saw Yop play that part of the game on his stream but he decided he wanted to some more optional missions before going to Nibelheim and I don't know if he ever went back to it. If he did, I missed it.)

Whatsherface in Dirge of Cerberus
who gets crushed by an automatic door for no raisin whatsoever and then doesn't even die anyway or some shit  That was fucking stupid

Other than that....

Dyluck - even though you don't get much time spend on the character (or indeed many of the characters) it was pretty fucking sad that the Girl character gets reunited with him only very briefly before he dies.

FLAMMIE! I mean, jesus. YOU HAVE TO KILL YOUR PET DRAGON.

Elina... You spend most of the game wondering what has happened to Nina's sister and then you find out and it isn't pretty

Oh and Mami. Not fair man.

You don't, actually. The Mana Beast just looks like Flammie.

But yeah, the Dyluck thing is super depressing. Don't know how I forgot about it. The death of the Mana Tree is pretty shocking too.

The two main characters who actually have a child together die at the end of the game!! Seriously, that's probably the one that stayed with me the most. Probably because unlike some of the sidekick deaths that often happen in videogames, this one came after everything is said and done. The world is saved, it's their time to enjoy some peace and calm... only they won't. Even more heartbreaking when the rest of the characters talk among themselves in the epilogue, stating they need to prepare rooms for their friends when they come back.

Then how come
Flammie isn't shown in the ending? I know they say something like 'Isn't that a Flammie' /'Flammies were once Mana Beasts' or something to that effect but I put it down to crappy translation. Anyway I think it makes for a more impactful ending if it is Flammie :monster:

And yeah, the death of the tree sucked, moreso because you only just find out that its the Boy's (I refuse to call him Randi!) mother who IIRC he's never really known.

I can't remember but I think Flammie was supposed to be the name of the species or something. Idk.

If you just want to check it out, the whole game is really just a 22 chapter cinematic/interactive anime that's just fucking excellent and constantly stuffed with tragedy & death. Here's a cinematic playthrough of all of the cutscenes stitched together if you wanted to see it all for yourself.

Obviously all the murders of his wife that started it all, but mostly Yasha's death and eventually Asura's death in the True Ending. Having the brotherly rivalry between the two of them build up and finally reach a conclusion when Yasha's sacrificed his life for Asura and is living on borrowed time. Then the final ending of Asura choosing not to forgive Chakravartin and destroying him at the expense of his own life to give his daughter a chance to live free.

I'm pretty sure that the Flammie you summon as your transport isn't the Mana Beast. I mean, it wouldn't make sense that the dragon you saved from a giant snake that had killed its parents, saves you from being bombed by Emperor Bombs Away would suddenly go "nah fuck it fuck the humans the world needs to burn".

And how else would the Hero and the Princess be able to get off the Mana Fortress afterwards?

....look, I just don't wanna think that Flammie = Mana Beast and that I killed my pet dragon. Flammie is like 90% the reason why I wanted a pet dragon as a kid. :<

Ah sorry man, I thought that would be as obvious as Aeris;).

I sort of new he had to die at the end, because of how the timeline was. Expecting it took away the surprise, yes, but not the severe emotional-ness of it...

@Flintlock: Airling/Darth never specified what game Zack's death was from (since it occurs in FFVII, too and that instance of it also lands high up on my own list). You assumed Crisis Core and, in turn, got confirmation of the assumption. So…

Also, just FYI, I played all of CC knowing that's what was gonna happen, and it doesn't lose any impact at all knowing that it's coming, because they do some really amazingly clever things with it. (It and Asura's Wrath are on the top of my list because of them).
Both are the only games I know of that take the gameplay UI and turn it into a real representation of something in the character's mind at the very end of the game that evokes a HUGE emotional response by doing so.

That said: Everyone - spoiler tags regardless of how obvious it seems from now on, pl0x?
