Movies I need to watch(Must see's)

Cookie Monster

NOM NOM NOM
somewhat outdated list of my favourites:

12 Monkeys; 2001: A Space Odyssey; Almost Famous; Amélie; Barton Fink; Blazing Saddles; The Big Lebowski; A Clockwork Orange; The Dark Knight; Die Hard; District 9; Dr. Strangelove; The Empire Strikes Back; Fargo; The Fellowship of the Ring; Good Night and Good Luck; The Good the Bad and the Ugly; High Fidelity; Inception; Iron Man; Kill Bill; Kung Fu Hustle; Life of Brian; Monty Python and the Holy Grail; Moulin Rouge; Network; A New Hope; Once upon a Time in the West; Pan's Labyrinth; The Prestige; Pulp Fiction; Raiders of the Lost Ark; The Return of the King; Return of the Jedi; School of Rock; Serenity; Seven Samurai; Sideways; Sybil; Taxi Driver; This Is Spinal Tap; The Two Towers; Up; The Usual Suspects; Wall-E; Why We Fight

objectively each of these is worth at least an 8/10 and I would recommend all of them for people who are interested in their respective genres

Seraphim Falls, Pan's Labyrinth, 3:10 to Yuma, The Big Lebowski, Fargo, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Pulp Fiction, Crank, Dog Soldiers, Moon, Mulholland Drive, Planet Terror, Super, Watchmen, District 9, Fight Club, The Fountain, Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, There Will Be Blood, Coraline, Twelve Monkeys, American History X, The Prestige, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Dogma, Drag Me to Hell, The Social Network, Troll Hunter, Army of Darkness, Troll Hunter, Requiem for a Dream, Drive, Carnage, Warrior, Sunshine.

Off the top of my head. These are all excellent and incredibly interesting movies. Maybe not for their plot, but there is something incredibly compelling or fascinating about a certain element (whether it be the direction, art design, writing, whatever) about all of these that definitely warrants a look.

^These suggestions are solid.

I'll add:

City of God, The Fall, Schindler's List, Dead Poet's Society, Lost in Translation, The Tree of Life, Drive, Midnight in Paris, and Waltz with Bashir. I'll probably make a longer list later.

Pulp Fiction (and any other Tarantino movie)
Eyes Wide Shut
Tenebrae; Deep Red (giallo movies by Dario Argento. They are old but greatly influenced the thriller genre)

I know there are repeats, just take them as extra-recommendations. There are classics that I love, but also mixed in with recent movies I think are awesome, so there are must-sees for me.

Also, you should watch Wes Anderson movies, probably in order of their creation because they start awesome and get miraculously better:
Rushmore, Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic, Darjeeling Ltd., Moonrise Kingdom

If you can find the "Live On Broadway" version of RENT I would recommend it because the movie they made in 2005 was absolute shit but the play itself is kind of awesome.

TV Shows:

THE WEST WING. Seriously. Seasons 1-4 of this show are amazing (don't bother with Season 5 on) Anyway, more:

Pushing Daisies
Arrested Development
Game of Thrones
Clone High
Trigun
Sealab 2021
Frisky Dingo
Home Movies
Archer
Community
Battlestar Galactica (2003 on)
How I Met Your Mother (Season 2 is the peak)
Misfits (Seasons 1 and 2 only)

special mention: Babylon 5. The production value is the shittiest thing, the actors are terrible, the music is canned, the effects are dated, the design is absurd and the dialogue is sometimes god-awful. Why recommend it? Because the story is probably the biggest payoff ever on TV. They wrote the plot of every episode in all five seasons before even pitching it. If you can stand to watch that show, you will appreciate the fuck out of it.

I love The West Wing, but I love the seasons after season four almost as much as the first four. It became an almost completely different show after Aaron Sorkin left, though, so I can see why the later seasons got such a divided reaction.

I came to GITS in a rather weird way, PS1 game, film, manga and then the anime series. I don't think it adversely affected my enjoyment :monster:

Anyway, I forgot a few, these aren't all necessarily brilliant films (some are!) but are kind of uh... cultural staples? Or something *shrug* Apologies for any repeats.

The Neverending Story
Legend
Manhunter
Silence of the Lambs
The Shawshank Redemption
Jacobs Ladder
Thelma and Louise
Little Shop of Horrors
Misery
Time Bandits
Confessions of a Dangerous Mind
Frost/Nixon
1984
The Elephant Man

A more recent one, but an out and out spectacle from start to finish is the movie Redline.

All I will tell you to start is that it's an animated film set in the far future about a cross country race where anything goes, across a military planet that doesn't want them there and plans on using any means necessary to take them all out.

It is a love story.

If you have an appreciation for good war movies, The Thin Red Line, Saving Private Ryan and Black Hawk Down are great. Notice that the movies don't really revolve so much the war itself than the individual people involved - character driven an' shit. They're also 2+ hour slogs which are physically tiring, pretty fitting for the subject material involved :monster:

Black Hawk Down is a personal favorite of mine.

Shit did anyone mention Stranger Than Fiction?

Because Stranger Than Fiction was fucking funny and thoughtful.
Absolutely loved it. Will Ferrell doing a great straight-faced job, Dustin Hoffman playing his role perfectly, Emma Thompson being what every writer feels like when they have writers block ;-;

It reaches out to me on so many levels and I love it.

I loved that movie, but Ferrell didn't do it for me -- but the writing, and Hoffman, and Thompson. All great.

I can't really imagine any other actor who might have fit that role better, tbh - Ferrell pulls off that great hangdog look that makes him the totally nerdy butt-monkey that Harold Crick is.

Queen Latifah was alright too. :awesome: And Maggie Gyllenhaal was cute.

look at that tax man what a butt monkey
