How exactly is this adaptation seemly pandering to chinese goverment?

It has no musicals, which the Chinese government hates and is more in the spirit of those nationalistic movies they have been promoting lately.

1) Where do you get they hate musicals? Link to something where the goverment asks movies to remove musicals.
2) Too early to say that when we have little footage

My thinking is immediately: why boycott Disney? Like, to what end? It would be like boycotting a Shinra product. Like, good for you and all, but unless you blow up a reactor you’re not going to do sweet fuck all.

Usually when this kind of pre-release protest pops up I am instantly suspicious of the protestors, because controversy generates buzz, which generates dollars, and it’s a pretty common tactic. Does Disney/USA have a stake in the Hong Kong protests? How closely are Americans following the protests, and what’s the general opinion on the righteousness of the protestors? If the answers are yes, closely, and righteous, I’m inclined to believe that the protestors actually don’t give a fuck about some American movie, and this is all Disney-generated click bait to generate a few more million dollars for their film.

That doesn't mean the (american movie, directed and writen by americans) movie itself is pandering to chinese goverment.

While it's made by Americans, over the years people have been pandering to the Chinese in order to tap into the Chinese movie market.

How exactly?

The Communist Party has strict rules about what is supposed to be depicted in films which is perpetuating superstitions, using supposed historical figures in a different settings, and damaging the moral of the Chinese people.

So they have regional or cultural restrictions specific to their country – just like anywhere – but theirs are different from a majority of the world stage of media. Just compare the depiction of violence vs. nudity and which is more accepted where. Video games already have different models used in different regions, or swap out enemies, or things like Nazi flags depending on the country they're releasing in. While the government may ENFORCE those rules legally, they're an extension of a cultural implementation.

Now, that may be manipulated by corrupt and powerful governments, but obeying those rules doesn't make anyone more actively complicit with the Chinese government than they are with any other country where they want to release their media. If they're directly including Chinese propaganda, that's something else entirely.

(I also wanted to note that the calls for the boycotts in the west is likely just going to galvanize the Chinese audience into seeing the film even more)

Given how awful the Chinese government is, I would say that's why people are not liking this is tied in with appeasing them.

Also the Anti-Hong Kong people have made memes comparing the protesters to the Huns and the leaders to Shan Yu. Shang is compared to Shang, while the citizens are represented as Chi-Fu.
