Multiplayer In Video Games

So lately practically every game has multiplayer, but aside from the Wii, the majority of it's been online. I go to the video store to rent a lil crappy 2player game to play with my gf, oh yay, it says multiplayer or 2 with a controller on the back. so ok, cool. take it boom, and BOOM. it's online only. or crappy vs only modes.

this has happened to me at least 4-5 times. once when buying a game, cause the review said it had multiplayer. but it was some stupid "survive as long as you caannn!! ooo!!!" instead of something like playing through the game together.

it's sad when something like l4d on the 360 SUPRISES you because you can actually play with someone else in the room.

And yet my only real complaint with L4D is that you should be able to play with four people in the room and you can't. I understand the lack of vision would suck, but it's a 4 player co-op game that depends on good teamwork.

I get a lot of people coming into my store looking for co-op games, like fathers and sons. The only thing I can ever really recommend is the Lego games, and they normally say, "Ya we have them already."

From what I've been able to understand, in the gaming industry they make more money by you needing your own system, online access, copy of the game, etc to play with your friends rather than only needing one of each of these things to play.

Oh, and the fact that gamers don't have IRL friends. :monster:

I don't play online
because I don't have nets to connect to. D;

I agree with online just being a nice addition for games as opposed to it being the centerpiece of them. That's why MAG sickens me.

On a related note, Blizzard are 'tarded for removing the LAN play aspect from StarCraft 2, since it's pissed off a large number of people enough for them to simply not buy the game now, and simply pirate it instead.

Yup, and it'll be LAN-able through illegal channels exactly 0.2 seconds after it's leaked, 4 weeks before the official release.

Apart from RPG's I only really like to play Xbox with mates, I don't even like Xbox live by my self. Sports games are the only options really. But then Fight Night Round 4 and Virtua Tennis 2009 just came out so I'm hyped on getting those.

Has anyone played Tales of Vesperia? I heard it's got 4 player like Symphonia but with improved camera angles. Is that true?

The lack of local multiplayer in Killzone 2 is quite dissapointing :(. Other than that, most of the games I play have local multiplayer.

That's totally different. That's like saying WoW is cheap for focusing on online only. MAG has been built from the ground up as nothing but an online game, and a sort of MMO at that.
I don't expect to get the game as it doesn't really interest me, but I still thing it's unrelated to this.

Anyway I agree, I hate this lack of support for local multiplayer lately. I don't think a Call of Duty has had it since 3, but I might be thinking of something else, so correct me if I'm wrong there. And like V said, the lack of LAN on Starcraft II is a phenomenally stupid idea and will only encourage the illegal activities they claim they'll prevent.

There aren't very many games I play on the internet, and even when I do, I never enjoy it nearly as much as a round of multiplayer with friends all in the room. Considering games like Goldeneye and Mario Kart solidified multiplayer as a selling point of a game, you'd think they would keep the basics.
