NeoGAF owner accused of sexual assault (again)

NeoGAF is currently down (for "scheduled maintenance", lol) and almost its entire moderating staff has quit after new allegations of sexual harassment surfaced concerning the site's owner, EviLore. This is a man who had previously bragged about sexually assaulting a woman in a bar who asked him to buy her a drink to "show that [he] wasn't being taken advantage of".

Multiple threads addressing the allegation were closed and deleted on the NeoGAF board before the whole site was taken down. As usual, that made things worse. People started taking to Twitter to announce they were leaving.

The end of NeoGAF? Maybe. I don't think it can continue unless the owner hands it to someone else, and I have a feeling he won't.

Person with "edgy" online handle turns out to be a dick offline too? Who'd have thought.

(Perhaps dick is too nice a word in this case but you get the idea.)

I was browsing NeoGAF last night while this happened. There are two main forums - Gaming Discussion and Off-Topic Discussion. I never leave Gaming Discussion, so I only noticed something was amiss when a random thread spilled onto it titled "ban request". When I went to the off topic board to check it out, it was littered with threads calling this out, demanding that he step down and hand the reigns of the site to someone else. I could only work out that there had been allegations made against him of some kind because almost everything else had been nuked and posters were pretty vocal saying things like "FUCK YOU EVILORE" but nobody actually explaning what was happening. Apprently there was a Facebook post from someone that brought all this to light but anyone who posted it was being banned/ the posts deleted. At a certain point I started getting "503 Service Unavailable" - the "Scheduled maintenance" message, and that was while trying to bring myself up to speed on the whole situation. I started a thread here even, I didn't hit post because I wanted to wait til this morning to see if it was back up (it's still not).

GAF is probably the most popular gaming board on the web. There are millions of people who view the board, and there must be members in the hundreds of thousands. It's an incredibly busy board. Perhaps most worth noting is that a lot of industry personalities (Jason Schreier (Kotaku), Jim Sterling (Jimquisition), Adam Boyes (Playstation Vice President) actually posted there, and people like Neil Druckmann (director of The Last of Us, Uncharted) actually read it.

If this is really the end of NeoGAF, it's the end of an era. I will say most importantly I hope the site's owner is brought to justice and that the truth can be found. It's also worth noting however that I spend a shitload of time browsing that place and its loss will be felt across the gaming sphere. It had a shitload of members and activity, and with that often comes bad seeds (as I'm sure we all know), but it had one of the best communities I've seen. This is a horrible stain on the place.

While all this shit is going down with GAF, appearently one of GAF mods that left the site started a new GAF-like site called geonaf. Doubt this site will replacr NeoGAF.

So he did this because he thought the woman was trying to take advantage of him by asking him to buy her a drink?

He literally couldn't have just told her no and to gtfo? He actually had to react this way?

Not really related as I actually never visited that site, but:

What's up with people in response to this claiming that women finally having the guts to come out with their sexual assault stories (re: that Hollywood dude whose name I'm not gonna bother looking up) are nothing but a 'wave'?

Oh, risking my career to accuse someone of sexual assault just because they flirted with me (!) is something I'm going to do because it's the coooool thing to do these days

Also apparently, if you have a male friend, don't ever share a car with him and have shots in his hotel room because you're asking for it. Thanks Saudia Arabia Western World.

Harvey Weinstein, the asshole whose actions finally being exposed prompted the #metoo movement?

It also makes me happy to see that people are also acknowledging Corey Feldman in all this mess as well. He's the dude who reported sexual assault years ago and got shot down by Barbara Walters on The View and has had people making fun of him for it since. I've seen lots of stuff going around about how "Corey warned us about all of this years ago why did it take until now for people to take it seriously?"

I mean fuck, for the people who are all like, "Why did you wait to speak up?" just LOOK at what happened to Corey. Look at how people reacted to a man talking about this. You honestly think a woman would have stood a chance? The ball has always been in the assaulter's court.

Makes one wonder whether Feldman's arrest for drug possession last night (he's been outspoken again since all of this with Weinstein blew up) is unrelated.

I'm sure another site will rise and eventually take NeoGAF's place, but I can't seem to name one on the top of my head. Anyway, I hope EviLore's ass is brought to court.

A bit off topic but the, "look at how people reacted to a man talking about this" isn't entirely a parallel argument like it often is for issues of not being listened to. The issue here is, and has always been an issue of power dynamics, and the reason it affects women more is all the preexisting patriarchal sexism that has more men in positions of power.

Insofar as confession – Societally men are supposed to repress vulnerability & emotion under absolutely all circumstances and are even more marginalized from ever coming out and speaking about something like this by other factors. There's a totally different issue at play there – but I can tl;dr about that elsewhere.

BACK ON TOPIC:

It's kinda surprising to see that any site can get properly ACF'd-over when the management's a shitshow. It'll be interesting to see if it gets brought back, or if something else rises from the ashes.

I still remember one of the times he spoke out about it one of the hosts had seriously one of the most disgusting reactions and statements to what he was saying.

I wonder why people didn't speak up.

Over 24 hours a thread generated over 1000 replies about the state of the forum... from what I gather, people are also talking about a new forum called Era, people are geeting invited to the Era Discord first to test and triage some things before it goes live, I think.

Feldman's had a longstanding relationship with partying and drug abuse that has painted the image of him being an unreliable, attention seeking sod. The problem is this happens to a LOT of child stars that aren't looked after by their parents. For every Mara Wilson and (after some clean up) Drew Barrymore, there's a Feldman that just went off the rails and never quite came back. People look at people like Feldman as tabloid material desperate to get attention back once their premature fame has worn thin.

The reality is these kids are almost always abused, and the behavior they exhibit as child star burn outs is usually a symptom of this abuse. It wasn't that Corey was a male, because he was a boy at the time; It was that he was a child star that made it BIG time as a child star, and then quickly started falling away, People were writing his claims off as desperation, rather than genuine whistle blowing.

Its kinda sad how being a celebrity means you're life is somehow simultaneously worth so much more than everyone's, and yet at the same time we can treat them like garbage at the drop of the hat. I kinda despise celebrity tabloid culture that way.

There's been a mass exodus to a new forum called ResetERA, which looks to be a much more positive place. Membership is invite-only for now, I managed to get an account through a NeoGAF community discord group I'm a part of. The forum is already incredibly busy.

Here's a Kotaku article on it.

There are a few things to keep in mind if you want to join, the most important of which is that you will have to use a "paid" email address (the same was true on GAF) - this means an ISP provided email, a workplace email or a student email. Any of those should work. The second is security - they already offer 2-factor authentication which I've enabled on my account, ERA and it's predecessor GAF drew the ire of trolls from the likes of 4-chan. The internet (in general) hates them because their strict rules and inclusive policies are seen as elitist.

The third is that when registration is open it'll likely take a while to join for verification reasons, and when you join you'll be a junior member, which essentially means you're under scrutiny until a time period and certain post count has been passed.

Since I was invited in the early waves of invite-only membership codes that were handed to specific communities, I've bypassed the early restrictions. If they offer some way for current members to vouch for people, I'll certainly do that for those who want to join. I got very very lucky.

The forum currently has 8513 members, an average of 55 posts per minute and they haven't even opened registration to the public yet. It's insane.

I wasn't one of the cool kids to be invited because the EZA GAF discord was made too late to be vetted :monster:
Kept missing those 10-minute codes they were occasionally handing out too. Public registration starts soon though.

^That's fair, I joined GAF because there were often FF threads I wanted to contribute to (they've had some threads about Shademp's stuff in the past), so I thought it would be prudent to get an account on the new place aswell while I didn't have to deal with waiting for months for account approval.

@Tets I had one of the ten minute codes to give out on Thursday night but because it was such a small window I gave it to people who were online on Discord at the time, I checked but it said you were offline >.<.
