If it's just side characters for the story itself... my money would be on:
Princess Sarah (for I and III)
Leon
Kain or Zeromus
Raine
General Leo
Aerith
Rinoa
Garnet
Yuna or... God I hope not... Seymour
Basch

My biggest reason is because most of these choices are important to both parties, Light and Dark.

I really can't imagine new playable characters, so I won't speculate on that end as I'd be disappointed otherwise...

Aerith wouldn't be able to do shit. She was annoying as hell in combat. Especially when you first get her in the game. If she was in the game, she wouldn't be a playable character. Rather, she should be a presence, as some sort of motivation for Cloud in his story arch. As far as playable characters go, I'm not sure Tifa would be a good idea, since I'm pretty sure all of the characters use weapons, but it would certainly make more sense. Vincent too, but guns wouldn't really work

EDIT: I'm not sure if Rinoa would be a good idea either, its up in the air. Maybe Laguna. :/ Yuna will work though.

LOL @ people expecting new playable characters.

They're gonna be NPCs. And more than likely, tutorial NPCs like Barret, Yuffie, Red XIII, Celes, and the like. I doubt we'll be seeing fully modeled renders of any other characters. We only got one shot of a moogle.

Inorite. We can't have Kingdom Hearts characters, they'd be ridiculously overpowered.

I mean, Sora kicked the crap out of Sephiroth using only his key.
