While WoW dominates more than half the market, the market is still growing, and that doesn't mean just WoW. There is a lot of risk inherent in developing an MMORPG, and much of it has to do with maintaining subscribers. If a company like SE managed to make a decent MMORPG (), they could probably swing the subscribers.

See what the difference of this model is that it's a lot more focused and far-reaching than Square Enix's more game-centric idea.

Which is not to say that Square Enix doesn't invest in outside things (such as figurine production, manga publication, and spinoff television media which I know for a fact SE has a hand in), but it's a far wider shotgun approach than, say, one central IP with peripheral media forming the same sort of importance and grabbing a mainstream audience.

I'm not defending SE's decision to make a mmo at all, my post was in response to force's. WoW is not the be all end all of mmo games.

OT: I think this really is a retarded idea after the trainwreck that is FFXIV. =/

FFXI was only a failure as far as SE's ridiculous expectations go. It did better than most MMOs, but failed to appeal to a wider audience.

People forget that FFXI was the biggest MMO around for like 2 hours before WOW came out. But even then it continued to hold its own. I never liked it, but people did and I wasn't too surprised that they'd try again. But I'm surprised that they'd try again now.

I heard that the general consensus was "meh," which made sense to me since it was SE's first attempt. If I'm misinformed, I'll re-evaluate my position.

It sounds really unlikely that they'll pull something together if they're also trying to patch up something they had to issue a public apology for. If XI was decent, it's all the more impressive that XIV was such a failure.

No it will be Final Fantasy XIII- 2, part 5.5 You have a choice to play as either Serah or Lighting, and you go around in Sazh's transformer summon shooting things. And the storyline or gameplay won't matter, because the game will look pretty and have good graphics. The game will suck and be filled with bugs and errors, and Wada will apologize and say that reason why the game failed was because of all the earthquakes in the world recently. Then they'll bring out XV as a MMO.
