You do realize that the Sephiroth copies/clones in FFVII were living, breathing people, right?

They were the survivors of the Nibelheim Incident. They were those who didn't die when Sephiroth went on a rampage and Nibelheim got burned to the ground. Hojo took those survivors, injected them with Jenova cells, showered them in Mako and let them loose to see if they'd go and try to find Sephiroth.

I know, and if you remember, the Xehanort clones were actual people's hearts as well as both Saix and Braig apart from the Riku Replica in KH3(but that's still unrelated but similar none the less).

But unlike Cloud and Zack, those poor people were nameless, couldn't even remember who they were at that point and Hojo called them and both Cloud and Zack clones(mainly because Hojo is the most disgusting and evil guy ever).

....W-What the hell does Xehanort have to do with this!?!

That has nothing to do with FFVII at all and is not similar. What?

Unlike Cloud and Zack, the survivors of the Nibelheim Incident were injured, traumatized and not physically built to survive the SOLDIER process and had their minds shattered, leaving them mindless and suffering mako poisoning. Cloud technically was that way too.

Because their minds are blank slates, Jenova and Sephiroth's consciousness can take over and make them mindless slaves to their will.

I have no idea why you suddenly veered off into Kingdom Hearts lore but that simply makes no sense and has nothing to do with this.

Sorry, ended up accidentally deleting my other post when I wasn't meant to.

Anyway, I am aware of that, but unlike Cloud and Zack who both at least remembered most of their memories, the rest of those poor people were nameless since they couldn't remember who they were and Hojo called them and both Cloud and Zack clones(because Hojo is the most disgusting villain ever).

No, Aerith is shown first to be plagued by the spirits.

At 0:46, Aerith drops her flowers and flails her arms as if fighting off something that's trying to grab her.

Cloud is calmly holding a flower, staring at Aerith confused, as if wondering why she is suddenly freaking out.

Aerith then yells "Help me!" And grabs Cloud's arm.

Upon having physical contact with Aerith, Cloud's eyes widen as the spirits tormenting Aerith become apparent to him.

So no, Cloud's not the one being tormented. Aerith is.

Good god, hasn't poor Aerith suffered enough as it is?

I did say the KH thing was unrelated, but it just seems similar to me.

Like I said, they couldn't remember who they were, but at least Cloud managed to hold onto his name, despite his memories being merged with Zack's. But then again, Cloud wasn't a SOLDIER either. He just had unusual strength but still deemed unfit to be a real SOLDIER by ShinRa.

I think you’ve misunderstood what I meant by “plagueing”, I don’t mean to implicate that Aerith wasn’t being attacked by the spirits. I meant that Cloud is the source/cause (indirectly) of the spirits attacking Aerith (but is unaware). That they are “plaguing” Cloud by being attracted to his being, so like maybe after Aerith gives Cloud the flower, that physical contact/proximity causes Aerith to become aware of the spirits around Cloud and they start harassing her in response.

So the spirits are lingering around Cloud, but then start attacking Aerith?

I mean, why would they be lingering around Cloud, and why would Cloud be unaware?

I mean, I get what you're saying and it could make sense but I just.. Don't get that.

Going by the artwork, I think they're clearly trying to insinuate some sort of connection between the ghosts and Sephiroth. How, I'm not sure. I dunno why they'd be connected to Cloud but I think they definitely may serve as some sort of omen of Sephiroth's return and a prelude to his coming calamity.

If we go by the unused Early Material concept of Sephiroth/Jenova being able to stir and attract evil minds and spirits, it'd make sense for malicious ghosts and spirits to suddenly become "active" now that Sephiroth is stirring from within the planet and is like a cancer. I think that'd be interesting, perhaps.

Maybe it's the Omen of Jenova/Sephiroth's awakening. Jenova did wipe out the Cetra apart from a few survivors who were Aerith's ancestors and mother. Maybe it's her presence and the combination of the Jenova Cells in Cloud that's caused a reaction? Plus the Cetra were a threat and Aerith's definitely a threat to Sephiroth's goals. Plus in the OG, Sephiroth tried to force Cloud into killing her before doing so himself when Cloud had still been too strong at the time...

Unless in the Remake it'll be Cloud killing Aerith through Sephiroth this time.:scared:

Well if they connect the spirits to Jenova/Sephiroth and their will, Cloud having Jenova cells would can be reason enough for them to be attracted to Cloud’s presence. And if Jenova cells can mess with Cloud’s head I could easily see them making him unaware of Jenova/Sephiroth related wraiths. And Aerith being a Cetra could be plenty reason for the wraiths to attack her if they are Jenova related, since as others have stated, Cetra are kinda the anathema to Jenova.

Well, she's close enough to him that the entities around him might be encompassing them both. Maybe they sense she can see them, which is why they go for her? Either that or Sephiroth is just passing through en route to President Shinra's date with death.

I realise this question has been asked like ten thousand million billion times before, but it's Cloud's presence in the labs that woke Jenova, right? It's no mere coincidence that Sephiroth happened to stir himself and kill the Prez just when Cloud happened to be in the vicinity.

So looking forward to that death scene and the boss battle with Rufus!

Yeah, this is pretty much the theory I'm going with for now. I kind of wonder if normally people can't see the spirits but because Aerith can, that's why they attacked?... who knows? But I feel like maybe they're setting up for us thinking that these things are connected to Aerith but it turns out it's Cloud the whole time.

Double post but... that post about the floating ghosts might be parts of Jenova instead of Sephroth clones.... this would make sense as to why they said this remake isn't canon. If they're going to change stuff like that, it's possible Sephroth himself might not even be the one to kill Aerith

Problem with that is that the Sephiroth that killed Aerith was just a part of Jenova controlled by the real Sephiroth who was encased at the Northern Crater for the entire game. Plus Jenova can disguise herself as anything. She disguised herself as a Cetra when she first arrived in the World 2,000 years prior.

Yeah that's... a good point but I was wondering if it won't look like Sephiroth... and would be like her heart or something. That probably won't happen but was more along the lines of what I was thinking

When was this asked before?

But no, Sephiroth awoke Jenova. Jenova was roused from its inert state and made active again by Sephiroth's will. Sephiroth makes Jenova take his shape, stab President Shinra, and it serves as his avatar to hunt for the Black Materia, and orchestrate the Reunion so that he can use it to invoke Meteor.

No... They didn't say the FFVII Remake wasn't "canon." Nomura said it wouldn't be a Compilation title in continuity with the Compilation.

Anyways, if they did a massive plot change like that to FFVII, it would no longer be a remake of FFVII. It'd be a remix of FFVII. It would eventually spin off from what FFVII's core plot was, since the Sephiroth copies being people, specifically, the survivors of Nibelheim, is a pretty core and critical part of FFVII's plot.[/QUOTE]

So now that we've heard a few different bars of what was the same tune from the previous trailer......any idea what its supposed to be a version of?

Well that’s technically already sorta true, it was Jenova taking the form of Sephiroth that killed Aerith in the OG. They definitely won’t mess with the visual/general scenario of Aerith’s death though IMO.

I was under the impression that it was Sephiroth using the organic matter called Jenova to enable himself to briefly take physical form. Although why he would need to do that, when his spectral form was perfectly capable of "killing" Tseng, I don't know.

No... Sephiroth's form throughout FFVII, except his form within the crystal in the Northern Crater, and of course in the final battle of the game, is Jenova.

The Sephiroth that Cloud and the others pursue across the world, which culminates with the confrontation against Jenova DEATH... Is Jenova. Jenova shapeshifted into Sephiroth.

Sephiroth was always in the Northern Crater in FFVII. He never left that spot.

Yeah, the real Sephiroth was mind-controlling Jenova and then later Cloud behind the scenes without anyone even realizing it until the Forgotten City visit.

I am aware of this. What I'm saying is that it wasn't Jenova shapeshifting into Sephiroth, it was the will of Sephiroth using the organism known as Jenova, its physical matter, to shapeshift into himself.

First post on the forum, but I've been observing since 2013. Hi to all! Now straight to the point on the new trailer:
  • Exciting to see President Shinra (double-breasted suit please!) and Heidegger, although I have always imagined him a bit goofier. From the trailer, he looks... too serious.
  • Actually the music is growing up on me. It definitely has some epic sections here and there. Will see. maybe it is only for trailer purposes.
  • Battles are OK, I guess. I just hope that it will be a little more than just mindless button mashing, with occasional spelling. I am really interested on how this new character switch feature will influence the whole battle strategy. But... I think I was more excited on the battles from previous trailer. Maybe I am just a little bit tired (?) of the whole bombing mission segment reapeted over and over. Anyway, Cloud's moon jumping is funny and cool!:aah:
  • Now the wraiths part. I don't like it, unless it's explained good. Unfortunately I mean also their design (I have nothing againts Harry Potter but resemblance is so. What are these things anyway. This whole part seemed out of place for me. Also, the exposition between Aerith and Cloud in this scene is also lacking. It seems that they just talk and interact too much. The actual OG do not focuses much on their first meeting, which is good as it is. I am very much open to the new ideas, but this feels just weird. I guess, I will not have an option to call Aerith a slum drunk anymore... :P
  • I like Barret very much. I believe he will be such a cool character in the Remake. He seems like a real leader here.
  • Biggs comment on the explosion is so on point. More of such awareness, please.
So hyped!

Oh, well yeah that's the case.

Although to be clear, Jenova does have some semblance of will and volition. It's not brainless or without a mind. It just is entirely content and willing to serve Sephiroth and function as an avatar of his will.

@pxp I'm not 100% sure that is materia, it's grainy when you zoom in but it looks more like some sort of button or screw there's a crack or gap running down the center of it unless it's just the image.

Barret didn't know how to use materia until Cloud showed him in 7th heaven and that I believe is the guard scorpion battle? Although that was more for gameplay tutorial but I was also under the impression the group didn't like to overuse materia anyway, I mean I could be talking absolute bollocks for all I know and they've incorporated it from the very start.

First post ever * also been lurking in the shadows here are thelifestream.net for many years:

Observation regarding the wraiths belonging to Cloud or Aerith: The key art image seems to have one of those "ghosts" included... I think Cloud is carrying them around, unaware...

TL/DR testimony

I see many people complaining about these "ghosts" all around YouTube... And the fanbase community of this game is great but sometimes awful.
With that being said, I want a fresh game with an elaborated story so I'm eager to see the wraiths and new elements in action. I'm thinking a lot of the original 97' story and content was written on the go. To prove that, in purely speculative manner... Look at the many plot holes and many radical mood shifts. For example, the moment you leave Midgar, bam, it's a classic fantasy-ish story. While in development, they wanted Sephiroth to be a sibling of Aerith/Aeris. The ancient temple looks 100% Egyptian. I feel like it's only right for them to start creating and developing a lore that's original and true to the rest of the world of FFVII.
The thing is that with 2015-2020, there are fresh eyes at play, as they involved younger developers. Some with more experience and I'm guessing they can invest into creating a deeper artistic expression of this story. I'm all open for changes and I regard them as improvements... FF7 97' will always stay true and be there.
My past experience HD remakes or Redux versions are shallow. For example, I'm also a big fan of this game, called Oddworld Abe's Oddysey. They came up with a 3D remake of it... exactly the same game. Maybe some slight modification but it stayed pretty true. While it was impressive and fun, I still tend to go back, lead by nostalgia into playing the 97' version. I still prefer that over this newer remake. It might me because off the prerenderd backgrounds that made games look unique at all times. In 3D environments, many assets tend to repeat, creating this plastic universe. Even so, my I don't wanna go back to 97' to play the same game but in 3D. I feel like a great opportunity is being missed out. My hopes with this post is that I could encourage some of you to look forward to a newer retelling our favorite story.
