Awesome! I'll add these up in a little bit.

Is there any real mention of Cloud's family anywhere in the game aside from the super brief conversations with his mom?

X :neo:

There is a line when the party at Kalm where Cloud says that his father died when he was young and that his mother lived in that house alone (suggests only child). Incidentally, has anyone ever wondered about character siblings? What are the chances that every one of them is an only child? We know for a fact that Aerith, Cloud, Tifa, Red XIII and Yuffie are single (and Cait Sith is a toy), but what about the others. Barret says he lost his friends and family in the Corel incident, so that may include any siblings. Cid and Vincent are never mentioned that way. Makes you wonder...

S and G wrote:
Has anyone ever wondered why President Shinra uses the phrase 'you must be the one who quit SOLDIER and joined AVALANCHE'? It's quite clearly wrong as Cloud was never in SOLDIER. Pisses me off every time.
I've wondered this myself. But since Shinra admits he doesn't actually remember him, I figured maybe that word had spread through the city of AVALANCHE recruiting an ex-SOLDIER. He looks like one, after all.
But it could be a error too, what do I know

I brought this up in the 'fandom assumptions' thread and Makoeyes had a great theory on this where he reckons Don Corneo's spies listened to Cloud and reported to Corneo who in turn reported to Shinra. Good thinking.

@Shademp:

You're findings on the script are first class. Many thanks for gathering it for us.

Vincent
“Hojo…what a queer fellow.”
“Such utter lack of scientific talent…
compared with the genius of Dr. Gast…”
“Lucrecia chose him in order to protect him.”
“Now I understand…
I understand…but…”

The line about Lucrecia protecting him is a brilliant find.

In Mideel, on disc 2, when you play as Cid and find the rusty, old key, there's a door in one of the shops and if you try to open it, the key won't work, and he'll discover the door doesn't lead to anywhere. Then the shopkeeper will say something.

Can you find that line of dialogue please? It's rather...interesting./QUOTE]

Let me know if you can't find it. I'm sure i have it on a video somewhere which should be simple to hunt down.

That Vincent quote is pretty infamous, but it's vague who "him" is (whether Lu was protecting Hojo or Gast). And Hojo unfortunately does have scientific skill, but he's just totally, utterly insane is the problem.

LOL@ Cait's nurse comment. Never saw that before.

And the Cid vs Mideel "door" is one of my favorite unnecessary scenes in FF7. I forget if he says anything funny with the Potion in the cabinet in Kalm or not.

No, it's most certainly Hojo, because why would Lucrecia want to protect Gast, and for what reason? And the subject was already implied to be Hojo, so if it had changed, grammatically, she would have had to use his name as clarification to specify a new object of the subject. She chose Hojo to protect him from himself and his own inadequacy.

*Cid tries to use key but it breaks and he tells the shop keeper*

(Shop keeper)
“Of course there's no key.
It's a wall. We just painted a door on it.”

Cid
“Say what?
You drew that door on the wall?”

(Shop keeper)
“That's right. We drew it on there to make
it feel like you could pass through
it to another world.”
“Sorry to have surprised you.
It's not much of an apology, but
please take this.”

*talk to shop keeper*

(Shop keeper)
“We're hoping to pass through
a door like that one into another world.”
“I feel that you all might be able to
make my dreams come true.
Weird, isn't it?”

Awesome Shademp. You rock :monster:

That being said, doesn't that bit of dialogue remind you another Square-Enix game series that didn't get created until around 5 years later. :awesome:

I guess that shop keeper (I think he was in the weapon store) became an NPC in Kingdom Hearts. :monster:

Like his wife later says after Mideel is ruined.

(Shop keeper's wife)
“Have you seen my husband?
He disappeared during the big
earthquake and I haven't seen him since.”
“I thought he'd be in the store…”
“You don't think he got through that door
and went to another country
on the other side, do you?”
“That's all just a dream…
That could never really happen.
Heh…”

I always thought that was rather hilarious. Thanks for sharing that.

I think the first post in this thread should include a link to this game script.
http://www.geocities.com/letao12/ff7/
It includes almost everything, because the script is copied directly from the game files. So yes, even the hidden parts are there (but they are not compiled in one area).
I copy script from the game files, which is the same as using the above source.

It is too bad the following line is Cloud's only mention of his father.

*Nibelheim flashback, Cloud decides to tell the rest about his 'visit' to his mother*
Cloud
“I don't know if you'd call it a 'family'…”
“My father…died when I was still young.”
“That's why my mom……
lived alone in this house.”

It is, mostly because I fear Square will capitalize on it in some cheesy manner. Don't get me wrong, I would rather like the see the man, but just make him a shopkeeper or blacksmith or something in Nibelheim, nothing contrived.

I can't believe I forgot to share this one; a personal favorite.

*when you enter the Ancient Temple*
[Red XIII]
“…sniff…sniff…
This place smells good.”
“It smells the same as Cosmo Canyon.”

*When party first arrive at Cosmo Canyon*
Aerith: ‘Cosmo…Canyon? I wonder if there’s any relation to the planet or the Ancients.'

Is it just me or do these two quotes together (given the retranslated script reveals that the Cetra were not only travelers of the Planet, but travelers of the universe) suggest that the name COSMO Canyon is a reference to the early Cetran settlers who may have arrived there?

...The Cetra never traveled the universe.

I found a link (we'll need to ask Shademp or Glitterberri about this because I'm sure I found it through them) which i'm positive was from FF Citadel for someone called Cathy who had retranslated certain important scenes. I can't seem to find it again but I've attached the document i saved from the Gast tapes translations.

I'll go try find the link just now...

Except those translations are pretty damn old and contain loads of errors, as far as I'm aware...

Cetra travelled the planet, not between planets. ;)

Yeah, that's not correct. :monster:

That's old. And the Cetra have been stated in all materials as to just be travelers of the planet. Never the universe.

And I believe hitoshura said Cathy's translations are a bit awkward in a few places too. I wouldn't take them to heart.

He was trying to tout the same translations as definitive and fact, remember?

Oh okay :monster:

But all of the materials and stuff, including the UO state the Cetra just traveled the planet. Never the universe or stars, as Cathy states.

Ah...that must be where I found that link. I only read that thread like last week or something.

Phew *wipes forehead and makes whistling sound*

Don't need to rethink my whole views on the Cetra then. Thank God for that. The world (of FF7) makes sense again

*****EDIT*****

I can't help but feel that if this had been the case it would have straight away cleared up a few things such as what was mentioned above, the link between Spira and Gaia (discussed in Ultimania Omega) and where the ancient machinery aboard the Shera came from

Hmm, that girl in the Sector 7 Slums makes some remarks on the Reactor bombing.

“There's a news update.
They say that there was a terrorist explosion
up above, and that this time
it was a Mako Reactor!!”

...

“Ya see, I keep on top of these things,
an' if ya ask me…”
“if you knock out Midgar's power,
then all of its computers and signals are
going to be knocked out, too.”
“Financially there must've been about
a billion gil worth of damage.”
“An' that ain't all!!
A lotta innocent people got killed, too!”
“If the explosion had been in the middle
of the night, that woulda been one thing.
At least the people coulda gone in their sleep.”

...THIS time it was a Mako Reactor? She makes it sound like there were known explosions prior to that, but my guess would be it is a translation error.
And I thought the explosion did occur during nighttime... Then again a lot of things doesn't make sense at this point in the game, like the Shinra paper already printing news about the bombing.
